Encryption in the Cloud: What You Need to Know
Unless your company can spend a lot of money on new technology, re-engineering your environment and hiring a comprehensive cybersecurity team, you will most likely move to the cloud or seek external service partnerships.

In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Darren Guccione, CEO of Keeper Security, revealed what you need to know when it comes to encryption in the cloud. Topics will include:
- Choosing secure cloud vendors - third-party penetration testing, security audits and certifications. Depending on your business requirements, you may need to verify that your cloud vendor is certified to handle your data properly. If you process or store credit cards, PCI-DSS is a necessity. Additionally, depending on your security needs, a certification for a Cyber Security Framework (such as ISO 27001 or NIST Framework) may also be necessary. If you are an organization that is certified under SOC / SSAE16, you will also likely need to review the cloud vendor's SOC report.
- Where is the encryption key stored and why is it important? Does your cloud provider have the ability to decrypt your encrypted data? If so, then your data could be compromised if the cloud provider is hacked and the encryption keys are compromised. Even if your data is "encrypted" in the cloud does not necessarily mean that it is secure, depending on where the keys are stored.
- Zero-knowledge architecture - a zero-knowledge security architecture ensures that your encryption keys are never available to the cloud vendor. This means that even if the cloud provider is hacked, or otherwise compromised, that your encrypted data stored in the cloud remains secure. The encryption keys are only available to the client, and thus access to the unencrypted data is restricted to the client.
- The fine print - user agreements.

@CloudExpo Stories By Pat Romanski Organizations planning enterprise data center consolidation and modernization projects are faced with a challenging, costly reality. Requirements to deploy modern, cloud-native applications simultaneously with traditional client/server applications are almost impossible to achieve with hardware-centric enterprise infrastructure. Compute and network infrastructure are fast moving down a software-defined path, but storage has been a laggard. Until now.
