Presentation Slides By Elizabeth White You are moving to the Cloud. The question is not if, it’s when. Now that your competitors are in the cloud and lapping you, your “when” better hurry up and get here. But saying and doing are two different things.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit at 18th Cloud Expo, Robert Reeves, CTO of Datical, will explain how DevOps can be your onramp to the cloud. By adopting simple, platform independent DevOps strategies, you can accelerate your move to the cloud.
Spoiler Alert: He will also make sure yo... Apr. 21, 2016 02:00 PM EDT Reads: 1,313 | By Elizabeth White Traditional IT, great for stable systems of record, is struggling to cope with newer, agile systems of engagement requirements coming straight from the business.
In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, William Morrish, General Manager of Product Sales at Interoute, will outline ways of exploiting new architectures to enable both systems and building them to support your existing platforms, with an eye for the future. Technologies such as Docker and the hyper-convergence of computing, networking and... Apr. 20, 2016 03:00 PM EDT Reads: 1,672 | By Gene Kim As I have mentioned many times, I’ve learned more doing this project than any project in my professional career. This has been a four-year collaboration with Jez Humble and Dr. Nicole Forsgren, as well as Nigel Kersten and Alanna Brown from Puppet Labs. "I only got four hours of sleep last night. I woke up after an anxiety dream about deadlocks in the database."
Anyone who has run an online service probably knows this feeling. And this is what Jez Humble wrote on our Slack channel, 24 hours b... Apr. 20, 2016 04:30 AM EDT Reads: 1,716 | By Elizabeth White Culture is the most important ingredient of DevOps. The challenge for most organizations is defining and communicating a vision of beneficial DevOps culture for their organizations, and then facilitating the changes needed to achieve that. Often this comes down to an ability to provide true leadership.
As a CIO, are your direct reports IT managers or are they IT leaders? The hard truth is that many IT managers have risen through the ranks based on their technical skills, not their leadership ab... Apr. 20, 2016 12:45 AM EDT Reads: 2,627 | By Liz McMillan DevOps is about increasing efficiency, but nothing is more inefficient than building the same application twice. However, this is a routine occurrence with enterprise applications that need both a rich desktop web interface and strong mobile support. With recent technological advances from Isomorphic Software and others, rich desktop and tuned mobile experiences can now be created with a single codebase – without compromising functionality, performance or usability.
In his session at DevOps Su... Apr. 7, 2016 12:30 AM EDT Reads: 2,610 | By Pat Romanski WebRTC: together these advances have created a perfect storm of technologies that are disrupting and transforming classic communications models and ecosystems.
In his session at WebRTC Summit, Cary Bran, VP of Innovation and New Ventures at Plantronics and PLT Labs, provided an overview of this technological shift, including associated business and consumer communications impacts, and opportunities it may enable, complement or entirely transform. Mar. 8, 2016 11:00 PM EST Reads: 2,678 | By Elizabeth White WebRTC sits at the intersection between VoIP and the Web. As such, it poses some interesting challenges for those developing services on top of it, but also for those who need to test and monitor these services.
In his session at WebRTC Summit, Tsahi Levent-Levi, co-founder of testRTC, reviewed the various challenges posed by WebRTC when it comes to testing and monitoring and on ways to overcome them. Mar. 7, 2016 07:00 PM EST Reads: 1,256 | By Liz McMillan WebRTC has had a real tough three or four years, and so have those working with it. Only a few short years ago, the development world were excited about WebRTC and proclaiming how awesome it was.
You might have played with the technology a couple of years ago, only to find the extra infrastructure requirements were painful to implement and poorly documented. This probably left a bitter taste in your mouth, especially when things went wrong. Mar. 6, 2016 01:00 PM EST Reads: 2,190 | By Liz McMillan WebRTC is about the data channel as much as about video and audio conferencing. However, basically all commercial WebRTC applications have been built with a focus on audio and video. The handling of “data” has been limited to text chat and file download – all other data sharing seems to end with screensharing. What is holding back a more intensive use of peer-to-peer data?
In her session at @ThingsExpo, Dr Silvia Pfeiffer, WebRTC Applications Team Lead at National ICT Australia, looked at diffe... Mar. 6, 2016 11:00 AM EST Reads: 1,330 | By Pat Romanski With microservices, SOA and distributed architectures becoming more popular, it is becoming increasingly harder to keep track of where time is spent in a distributed application when trying to diagnose performance problems. Distributed tracing systems attempt to address this problem by following application requests across service boundaries, persisting metadata along the way that provide context for fine-grained performance monitoring. Mar. 4, 2016 11:00 AM EST Reads: 2,410 | By Elizabeth White At first adopted by enterprises to consolidate physical servers, virtualization is now widely used in cloud computing to offer elasticity and scalability. On the other hand, Docker has developed a new way to handle Linux containers, inspired by version control software such as Git, which allows you to keep all development versions.
In his session at 17th Cloud Expo, Dominique Rodrigues, the co-founder and CTO of Nanocloud Software, discussed how in order to also handle QEMU / KVM virtual machin... Mar. 4, 2016 06:00 AM EST Reads: 1,544 | By Pat Romanski With the Apple Watch making its way onto wrists all over the world, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a staple in the workplace. In fact, Forrester reported that 68 percent of technology and business decision-makers characterize wearables as a top priority for 2015. Recognizing their business value early on, FinancialForce.com was the first to bring ERP to wearables, helping streamline communication across front and back office functions.

While we’ve seen a lot of focus on the “A” and even on the “M”, there are very few examples of why the “C" is equally important in the DevOps equation.
In her session at @DevOps Summit, Lori MacVittie, of F5 Networks, explored HTTP/1 and HTTP/2 along with Microservices to illustrate why a collaborative culture between Dev, Ops, and the Network is critical to ensuring success. @CloudExpo Blogs By Pat Romanski Angular 2 is a complete re-write of the popular framework AngularJS. Programming in Angular 2 is greatly simplified – now it's a component-based well-performing framework. This immersive one-day workshop at 18th Cloud Expo, led by Yakov Fain, a Java Champion and a co-founder of the IT consultancy Farata Systems and the product company SuranceBay, will provide you with everything you wanted to know about Angular 2. Apr. 21, 2016 05:15 PM EDT Reads: 1,019 | By Dana Gardner A BriefingsDirect expert panel discussion examines the illustrious 20-year history of the UNIX operating system environment as an industry-wide and global standard success story.
It's not often that you reach a multi-decade anniversary in information technology, especially where the technology's relevance remains so high and the promise of more innovation and value is so needed and promising. Apr. 21, 2016 05:00 PM EDT Reads: 1,162 | By Jnan Dash BI Intelligence recently published the Top 5 Digital Trends that is worth looking at. It starts with a dramatic statement, “today, nearly 43% of the world is connected to the Internet, enabling us to talk, share photos, and conduct business halfway across the globe. As a result, we have seen more technological advancements in the past 10 years than we’ve witnessed in the past 10,000 years. And in the next five years, we’ll see even more”. Here are the key trend areas: Apr. 21, 2016 04:45 PM EDT Reads: 1,258 | By Sematext Blog For those of you using Apache Kafka and Docker Cloud or considering it, we’ve got a Sematext user case study for your reading pleasure. In this use case, Ján Antala, a Software Engineer in the DevOps Team at @pygmalios, talks about the business and technical needs that drove their decision to use Docker Cloud, how they are using Docker Cloud, and how their Docker and Kafka monitoring is done. Apr. 21, 2016 04:45 PM EDT Reads: 133 | By Dana Gardner Automation and ITSM-driven insights endow help desk personnel with more knowledge and provide a single point of support for end users, regardless of their needs while still catering to their preferred method of help.
We'll learn how automation and ITSM-driven insights endow help desk personnel with more knowledge and provide a single point of support for end users, regardless of their needs while still catering to their preferred method of help. Apr. 21, 2016 04:30 PM EDT Reads: 302 | By Elizabeth White Low-code platforms are an important strategy to create all sorts of applications extremely quickly and at a drastically reduced cost.
Additionally, they enable building applications that would never have been created in the first place due to cost, time constraints, or lack of expertise.
In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Thierry Ciot, Software Architect at Progress, will talk about why low code platforms are emerging, what opportunities they create and why they help build responsive and adaptive applications that users really want. Apr. 21, 2016 03:15 PM EDT Reads: 1,301 | By James Carlini If we are involved in a cyber-war, where are the frontlines? What are the defenses that will work? Much of the efforts done so far in cybersecurity are nothing more than building an ineffective Maginot Line for cyber-defenses.
Should we be spending more time (and money) in figuring out cyberwarfare and protecting critical infrastructure instead of conventional warfare? Apr. 21, 2016 03:00 PM EDT Reads: 272 | By Carmen Gonzalez NHK, Japan Broadcasting, will feature the upcoming @ThingsExpo Silicon Valley in a special 'Internet of Things' and smart technology documentary that will be filmed on the expo floor between November 3 to 5, 2015, in Santa Clara. NHK is the sole public TV network in Japan equivalent to the BBC in the UK and the largest in Asia with many award-winning science and technology programs. Japanese TV is producing a documentary about IoT and Smart technology and will be covering @ThingsExpo Silicon Valley. The program, to be aired during the peak viewership season of the year, will have a major impac... Apr. 21, 2016 02:30 PM EDT Reads: 2,571 | By Janakiram MSV One of the reasons why IoT has gained momentum in the recent past is the rise of cloud services. Though the concept of M2M existed for over a decade, organizations never tapped into the rich insights derived from the datasets generated by sensors and devices. Existing infrastructure was just not ready to deal with the massive Apr. 21, 2016 02:15 PM EDT Reads: 644 | By Ed Featherston Trust. It’s a fundamental aspect of interaction in a civil society – its importance has been ingrained in us since childhood. And it’s a concept that’s deeply intertwined with our very nature.
The level of trust we have with individuals, businesses, and technology affects our lives daily. This is important to remember when discussing new technologies. For example, our level of trust is a critical factor when evaluating a new technology as a potential solution for providing business value. Apr. 21, 2016 02:15 PM EDT Reads: 956 | By Flint Brenton Creating a unified toolchain is increasingly important for today’s modern software delivery approaches. Providing context, visibility and compliance around the growing number of tools and processes being used today is core to our mission of connecting the world of software delivery. Today, we are pleased to announce a new version of TeamForge that extends your ability to integrate activity data from the cloud hosted version of JIRA Software and, for DevOps, Chef, into a centralized platform. In addition, we’ve strengthened our capabilities for enterprise Git by supporting both commit- and pull... Apr. 21, 2016 01:54 PM EDT Reads: 156 | By Lori MacVittie Microservices is not just a style of application development, it’s a set of design principles guiding how applications are composed (or decomposed, as the case may be) with a resulting architectural shift as supporting components are added to the mix. Much in the same way SOA brought us UDDI registries and gateways, microservices is bringing service registries.
Service registries, for the uninitiated, are kind of like the internal DNS of a microservices environment. They’re needed to manage the rapid association and disassociation with IP addresses of the containers in which the microservices... Apr. 21, 2016 01:45 PM EDT Reads: 808 | By Sanjay Zalavadia In recent years, quality assurance teams have become accustomed to a variety of new technologies. It has been a big change for the many quality assurance analysts who came of age at a time when waterfall development methodologies and PC-centric applications were their front and center concerns.
Now they have to adjust to the realities of cloud computing and the ever-expanding mobile device ecosystem. A lot of infrastructures, development platforms and applications are being shifted off-premises to public and private clouds, while the device mix at many enterprises is becoming more diverse. Apr. 21, 2016 01:15 PM EDT Reads: 1,045 | By SmartBear Blog Performance is the elusive butterfly of API development. Everybody is intrigued with its beauty, yet few know how to capture it.
In the old days, the approach of many shops to ensure a performant API was to create some code and then pass it over to the wall to QA to do load testing. Later some integration testing took place. As long as the API worked and it was met some marginal performance benchmarks, things were good.
This worked well when a public, HTTP based API, consumed by a wide variety of distributed devices was more the exception than the rule. However, today APIs are a big deal a... Apr. 21, 2016 12:00 PM EDT Reads: 1,274 | By Pat Romanski Organizations planning enterprise data center consolidation and modernization projects are faced with a challenging, costly reality. Requirements to deploy modern, cloud-native applications simultaneously with traditional client/server applications are almost impossible to achieve with hardware-centric enterprise infrastructure. Compute and network infrastructure are fast moving down a software-defined path, but storage has been a laggard. Until now. Apr. 21, 2016 12:00 PM EDT Reads: 1,389 |
