TCP/IP connectivity starts with a DNS look-up so that Endpoint A, seeking to establish a connection to Endpoint B, can determine B’s IP address. Not knowing when a connection request may be coming, Endpoint B has to continually listen for the arrival of such requests. Not even knowing who the requester is, Endpoint B must respond to the connection request to establish a TCP connection. Only then can Endpoint B seek more information from Endpoint A to try to establish its identity, authorization, and trust. 
Cloud applications are well established for many activities such as CRM, HR, and billing. With the cloud paradigm proven for so many enterprise tasks, the question of cloud vs. on-premises seems like yesterday’s – or even last year’s – debate. But is the cloud ready to handle the unique requirements of legal work? The answer is yes, with a caveat. APIs have taken the world by storm in recent years.
The use of APIs has gone beyond just traditional "software" companies, to companies and organizations across industries using APIs to share information and power their applications.
For some organizations, APIs are the biggest revenue drivers. For example, Salesforce generates nearly 50% of annual revenue through APIs. In other cases, APIs can increase a business's footprint and initiate collaboration. Netflix, for example, reported over 5 billion calls per day to its API in 2014.
Over the last few weeks I was fortunate to meet a large number of Managed Service Providers (MSPs) at two separate industry events in Toronto. At both these events, focused on MSPs, and through all my conversations, one thing that resonated throughout was the dire state in which Managed Service Providers are currently conducting business. I am sharing my thoughts to help make sense of what the industry is going through and how the inability to adapt can lead to the slow death of an otherwise highly successful industry.
