Scott Jenson's Google #IoT Session @ThingsExpo

The Physical Web is an open standard so any device can broadcast a URL wirelessly and any device nearby can see and rank them

Internet of Things at Google

Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google.

Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices.

Scott Jenson has been at the forefront of user interface design for over 25 years. He was the first member of the User Interface group at Apple in the late 80s, working on System 7, the Apple Human Interface Guidelines and the original Newton. Following that he was Director of Product Design for Symbian, then managed the mobile UX group at Google and was Creative Director at frog design. Scott is now back at Google, on a quest to bridge the physical and digital worlds.

Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using the URL as a basic building block, we open this up and get the same resilience that the web enjoys.

With millions of smart devices coming in the near future, are we really going to have millions of apps? People are already "app-fatigued." There will always be room for hero-apps like snapchat but do I really want an app for my smart suitcase? That jukebox in the corner? The bus stop I'm next to?

In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Google's Scott Jenson will discuss how the Physical Web incorporates beacons that can be put in any small retail store, for example, so that every store now has "an app" for its customers.

The Physical Web is an open standard so any device can broadcast a URL wirelessly, so any phone/tablet/watch nearby can see and rank those devices. When the user taps on one, they just go to that web page. It's really that simple. It's about thinking small, enabling micro-information (what is in my prescription bottle) or micro interaction (can I buy a candy bar).

In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Boyan Ivanov, CEO of StorPool, will provide some practical insights on what, how and why when implementing "software-defined" in the datacenter.
