The Result Of Clive Palmer’s Al Gore Stunt: Carbon Tax Abolished, ETS Dead

The cynicism of today’s stunt by Clive Palmer became clear late tonight as the Palmer United Party leader confirmed that his senators will vote for the abolition of the carbon tax and the emissions trading scheme.

Palmer

Earlier today, Palmer called for the establishment of an emissions trade scheme (ETS) that would only come into force once China, the United States, the European Union, Japan and Korea had also taken action to establish similar schemes. International action of this order is all but impossible to imagine.

In an interview with Tony Jones on the ABC’s Lateline program, and in a subsequent encounter with journalists, Palmer clarified his earlier remarks and confirmed that no conditions would be set for the abolition of the carbon tax, other than a legislative guarantee that companies would pass on to consumers the savings from abolition. Into The Final Straight, Rudd Interrogated On Q&A

Kevin Rudd has confronted a forthright and critical audience on the ABC’s Q&A program tonight in what was most likely one of his last set piece performances as prime minister.

Rudd faced some severe questioning on issues such as election promises, nurses, Newstart for single parents, gay marriage, superannuation, education funding and the state of the economy.

Rudd

One questioner wanted to know whether Rudd would create a by-election in his seat of Griffith if he loses Saturday’s election but the prime minister would not accept the bait and refused to make any commitments based on an assumption of losing.

Rudd came to life in the latter stages of the program, providing crisper responses to questions and receiving applause for his spirited enunciation of Labor values. Earlier, audience members had questioned his commitment to policies on climate change and asylum seekers. The question of trust and conviction seemed at the heart of many questions.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott refused an invitation to appear with Rudd. The program’s host, Tony Jones, said an offer for Abbott to appear on his own on any night this week was still open.

Rudd And Turnbull On Q&A: Dumped Leaders Discuss Leadership

Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull appeared on Q&A tonight and discussed political leadership in Australia.

Flanked by the former chief executive of the Australian Industry Group, Heather Ridout, and economist Judith Sloan, the former Labor and Liberal leaders played to an admiring audience on the ABC talk show.

The discussion culminated in the final twenty minutes of the program when the two men were asked about their willingness to start a new party together. Both dismissed the idea, Rudd quipping that “Malcolm and I could never agree on the leadership”.

Rudd became Labor leader in December 2006 and Prime Minister in December 2007. He was deposed by Julia Gillard in June 2010. Malcolm Turnbull deposed Brendan Nelson to become Liberal leader in September 2008. He was replaced by Tony Abbott in December 2009.

Hockey On Lateline: The End Of The Age Of Entitlement

Joe Hockey11.15pm – Notwithstanding the usual annoying and incessant interruptions from his interlocutor, Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey has just offered up a remarkably woolly performance on Lateline.

Hockey has delivered a speech in London – transcript not yet available – in which he argues that The Age of Entitlement is over.

In the interview he was pressed on how this would be achieved in government. Aside from a defence of the Health Insurance Rebate as a government spending measure which actually reduces expenditure on other entitlements, Hockey was less than specific about what he will do as Treasurer in less than 18 months time.
