Senate President Announces Decision On Covered Visitors To Parliament House

The President of the Senate, Senator Stephen Parry, has announced that visitors who do not wish to be identified when visiting Parliament will be required to sit in the public galleries enclosed in glass that are normally reserved for school groups.

Parry announced the decision in response to a question from the Opposition’s Senate leader, Penny Wong. He said the decision was an interim measure, pending further advice from specialist agencies.

Visitors who cannot be clearly identified will be asked to be identified and to produce identification. They will then be free to move around the building but will be required to sit in the glassed enclosures in order to view parliamentary proceedings. [Read more…]

Sen. Jacqui Lambie (PUP-Tas) – Maiden Speech

Jacqui Lambie, the Tasmanian Palmer United Party senator, has given her maiden speech to the Senate.

Lambie, 43, was elected at the 2013 federal election. PUP polled 6.58% of the primary vote and she was elected on preferences. Her term began on July 1, 2014 and will expire on June 30, 2020.

Lambie spent ten years in the Australian Army, rising to the rank of Corporal. Following injuries she suffered in a field exercise, she engaged in a long-running dispute with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In her maiden speech, she called for a judicial inquiry into the Defence Force and the Department of Veterans Affairs. She alleged a “cover-up of appallingly high levels of abuse”. She spoke angrily and at length of the treatment of Marcus Saltmarsh, a soldier who was exonerated by a military court following the accidental shooting and death of another solider in East Timor in 2000. Carbon Tax Repeal Bill Defeated In Senate As Palmer Squabbles With Government Over Amendments

The Senate has rejected an Abbott government bill to repeal the carbon tax.

A combination of ALP, Greens and Palmer United Party senators, supported by Motoring Enthusiast Senator Ricky Muir, voted 37-35 to defeat the bill that would have abolished the carbon tax.

The bill failed due to a breakdown in negotiations between the government and the Palmer United Party. Palmer wanted the legislation to mandate that power savings be passed on to consumers. In the end, the amendment moved by Palmer was judged to be a tax that the Senate had no power to introduce. [Read more…]

Jacqui Lambie Asks Her First Question As A Senator; Wants Billions And Special Economic Zone For Tasmania

Senator Jacqui Lambie was the first of the new crossbench members to ask a question during Senate Question Time today.

Lambie, a Palmer United Party senator from Tasmania, asked the Leader of the Government, Senator Eric Abetz about jobs and the Tasmanian economy. She said she wanted to see $5 billion made available to Tasmania over 4 years and called for a “special economic zone” to be established. [Read more…]
