The Tamils have been on an Australian customs vessel in the Indian Ocean since last month. The High Court ruled that they could not be handed over to Sri Lankan officials.

The asylum seekers will have access to Indian consular officials but they will not be given the opportunity for resettlement in Australia. They are expected to be brought to Cocos Island and then to the Curtin detention centre in Western Australia, although Morrison would not confirm these details. [Read more…]

Scott Morrison Releases Robert Cornall Report Into Manus Island And Death Of Reza Berati

The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Scott Morrison, has released the report by Robert Cornall into last February’s riot on Manus Island and the death of Reza Berati.

The report says a Papua New Guinean man who worked for the Salvation Army led the beating that killed the Iranian asylum-seeker Reza Berati. A “brutal beating by several assailants” led to Berati’s death from a severe brain injury.

The report makes 13 recommendations. Morrison said the government would implement all of them.

The report says the violence on February 16-18 could not be attributed to any particular factor. It says frustration and anxiety about resettlement policies was one factor, aggravated by “the antagonism that had been developed between some transferees and PNG nationals employed at the centre and supporters in the local community. Some transferees treated PNG nationals employed in centre in a disrespectful and racist manner, and criticised their country”.

Statement by Scott Morrison, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection.

Scott Morrison Announces Formation Of Australian Border Force; “Reform Dividend Of Stopping The Boats”

The federal government is to create an Australian Border Force in 2015 to “protect the border and facilitate the lawful passage of people and goods”.

MorrisonThe Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Scott Morrison, made the announcement today in a speech to the Lowy Institute for International Policy.

He said the Australian Border Force would be established as part of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. It will be led by a Commissioner with the same standing as the Commissioner of the Federal Police, the Chief of the Defence Force and the Director General of ASIO. The Commissioner will report directly to the Immigration Minister.

Morrison said the new force is about strengthening Australia’s borders. “It is a reform measure, not simply a savings measure… This is the reform dividend of stopping the boats.”

Morrison said the new force would be a “more integrated, effective and efficient border protection operation”. Referring to new free trade agreements with Japan and Korea, he said: “To facilitate the expansion of trade that these agreements support, our border processing capabilities must be as efficient and transparent as possible.”

The new force will also be concerned with fighting crime, particular the importation of illicit drugs.

Transcript of press conference held by Immigration Minister Scott Morrison.

MORRISON: Thank you for joining me this morning. I can confirm that there was a more serious incident at Manus Island processing centre last night which involved further perimeter breaches. That incident involved persons at around just after 11 after some demonstrations, noise and various things being able to break through the fence. The incident ran to around 2am their time, early this morning. At 3am order was completely restored to the centre. As I noted in my statement, I refer you to the statement which was issued earlier this morning which goes through the key details of the incident as we knew it at the time. At all times the G4S staff who were involved were involved directly in maintaining order within the centre itself and to protect key parts of the infrastructure and accommodation within the centre. The security situation outside the centre was the domain of the PNG police. Now I want to come specifically to the matters of the injuries of those involved because there are some very serious issues there and it is my great regret to report. [Read more…]
