I still find it remarkable that Republicans running Mitt Romney’s campaign seemed to genuinely believe that he was winning.

Here in Australia it’s possible to find people who genuinely believe that the Gillard government is going to be re-elected. Many blogs supportive of the ALP promote the argument that Tony Abbott is unelectable. Equally, there are Coalition supporters who cannot contemplate the possibility. As in the US, one side is going to be very wrong later this year.

President Barack Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney have met in the first presidential debate in Denver Colorado.

A lacklustre Obama faced a confident Romney who dominated most of the debate. Whilst neither man stumbled and neither produced a memorable moment, the Republican Party will be buoyed by Romney’s performance.

LEHRER: Good evening from the Magness Arena at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado. I’m Jim Lehrer of the “PBS NewsHour,” and I welcome you to the first of the 2012 presidential debates between President Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee, and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee.

LEHRER: This debate and the next three — two presidential, one vice presidential — are sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates. Tonight’s 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. There will be six roughly 15-minute segments with two-minute answers for the first question, then open discussion for the remainder of each segment.

It comes days after Mother Jones magazine published video of Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s comments to donors at a private gathering last May.

The Day Mitt Romney Lost The Presidential Election?

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been embarrassed by a video of him making disparaging comments about American voters.

Mother Jones magazine has published details of Romney’s remarks to a private function of wealthy donors last May.

Romney said: “There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.”

Mitt Romney has officially accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for President.

Romney delivered his acceptance speech at the party’s convention in Tampa, Florida.
