Terrorism Threats: ASIO Director-General David Irvine Addresses National Press Club

The Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, David Irvine, has addressed the National Press Club on the threats posed by espionage and terrorism.

Irvine

Irvine maintained that the threats to Australia are real, but manageable with vigilance and updated intelligence capabilities. He defended the need for a security service, “governed by law with appropriate safeguards”, and argued against any revamping of the existing regime of checks and balances on ASIO.

He said 15 Australians are believed to have died fighting in the conflicts in Syria and Iraq. Around 100 people are believed to be involved in supporting terrorist activity in Australia.

Irvine stressed “that the tiny number of violent extremists, who nevertheless can make a rather big bang, does not represent the Islamic communities of Australia… We’re talking about a few hundred aberrant souls in the community of half a million Muslims and it is grossly unfair to blame Australian Muslims who see themselves as a committed component of Australia’s multicultural society.” [Read more…]

Senator Cory Bernardi (Lib-SA) – Address To The National Press Club

The conservative Liberal Senator from South Australia, Cory Bernardi, has addressed the National Press Club in Canberra.

Bernardi has been a senator since 2006. He is a former shadow minister.

Transcript of Cory Bernardi’s speech to the National Press Club.

BernardiThank you Steve and may I thank the honourable members and officials of the National Press Club. It’s a great honour to be here and a delight to be here on such an auspicious day.

It seems like a long time ago, in fact it was 2007, that I authored a report which ran very heavily in the Adelaide Advertiser that we needed cool heads on global warming.

If I could characterise one aspect of my political career it’s been that we’ve constantly been in that battle and today I think the Liberal Party and the Coalition parties, at least from my perspective, [have] made significant inroads into restoring some common sense for the people of Australia. Clive Palmer Addresses The National Press Club; Confirms PUP Opposition To Budget Cuts

Clive Palmer has addressed the National Press Club and confirmed that his party will oppose $9 billion of Budget cuts.

Palmer

Palmer said that the Palmer United Party (PUP) senators would oppose measures linked to the repeal of the mining tax, including the abolition of the Schoolkids Bonus, low income support and superannuation rebates for low-income earners.

The measures Palmer says his party will block amount to around $9 billion.

Palmer’s announcement followed the swearing-in of new senators which gives his party a crucial role in the Senate balance of power. The government moved immediately to bring on debate on legislation to repeal the carbon and mining taxes.

Government’s Values Are Not The Nation’s Values: Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen At National Press Club

The Abbott government’s values are not the nation’s values, Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen has told the National Press Club.

Bowen

Delivering the traditional response from the Opposition to the Federal Budget, Bowen said the “swingeing” cuts “take us to an Australia so much less than what we could do”.

Bowen said the issue went “way beyond broken promises”. The government had been “robbed of its moral authority in its first six months”.
