What’s the deal with Spider-Man? It’s the question fans have been asking all summer. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a major disappointment in almost all respects; following its debut grand plans to continue the franchise were completely reshuffled. As it officially stands right now, Drew Goddard‘s Sinister Six film will be out in 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will follow in 2018. There will also be a female-focused film sandwiched somewhere in the middle. That’s all official via Sony.
However the latest rumors suggest some, if not all of that might not be true anymore. Yesterday, the very reputable Drew McWeeny at Hitfix said he’d heard rumblings Sony was talking to Marvel Studios about working out some kind of deal for a crossover. Then today, the equally reputable Devin Faraci at Badass Digest said that’s just one of the possibilities he’s heard Sony is considering with the characters. The others are a “soft reboot” with the Sinister Six, completely shelving the character for a few years, and canceling the planned Venom movie. Typically, the How It Should Have Ended videos do exactly as they say on the label. But the problems with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were apparently so numerous, the team had to rewrite not just the third act but practically the entire film.
Which, in the end, actually makes even less sense. If you keep Richard Parker from getting into that plane crash, or prevent Max Dillon from falling into that electric eel tank, then why would there still be a big power plant showdown at the climax?
No matter, though. It’s just fun watching the HISHE gang poke fun at the nonsensical movie logic that runs the entire film. And it’s even more fun watching them bring in some superpowered pals for Spidey. Watch How The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Should Have Ended after the jump.

The Spider-Man films have represented a diminishing set of returns, for Sony on the domestic financial front (though we don’t have all data for long-tail revenue) and for audiences in terms of satisfaction. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 often felt surprisingly derivative of Sam Raimi’s own Spider-Man 2. When it did explore new territory, the story threads were unconvincing. More than anything else, this latest film felt as if it was the product of yet another mid-stream course correction. To hear star Andrew Garfield tell it, studio notes hurt The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In his eyes, things were in pretty good shape before studio decisions started cutting stuff and messing with the flow of the script.

The summer movie season is officially over and that means its time to wrap up our 2014 Summer Movie Wager. If you are unclear, every year a group of us attempt to predict which films will be the top ten of the summer season. You get points for being as accurate as possible.
Like most summers, 2014 was filled with surprises and familiarity. The biggest surprise? Guardians of the Galaxy. In just four weeks, it outgrossed every other film of the summer including massive hits like Transformers: Age of Extinction, X-Men: Days of the Future Past and more. What wasn’t a surprise? Almost everything else. Of the three contestants (myself, Peter Sciretta and Jeff Cannata) we all got at least 9 of the 10 films in the top ten right. The order was another story and is what finally declared a winner.

Does Sony have a plan for the Spider-Man film series? Of course they do! Well, actually… maybe? Any film series “plan” must involve an evolving set of decisions, but in the case of Spider-Man some of those decisions seem to contradict one another. The throughline of the two new films so far has involved Peter Parker’s parents, his father’s work at Oscorp, and Oscorp’s tendency to develop technology that is really great for evil. In Marc Webb’s movies, the company is essentially Ikea for supervillains.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is now on Blu-ray, and some releases feature a bonus disc that explains some of the ideas that are loosely leading up towards the Sinister Six.
