The announcement that David Ayer‘s DC Comics Suicide Squad movie was sandwiched between Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman and Justice League kind of made it seem like an afterthought. However, the first round of casting rumors has begun to circulate and they suggest, even if these actors don’t take the rolls, Warner Bros. has high hopes for the supervillain team-up film.
The Hollywood Reporter says that not only is Ryan Gosling being courted for a role, Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Margot Robbie all have offers to appear in the movie. Plus, while we may not know who is up for what role, El Mayimbe on Twitter says the team members who are in the script are Amanda Waller, Deadshot, Harkness and Vixen.

Warner Bros. is rounding up some of DC Comics’ biggest names for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but don’t think that means they’re neglecting their lesser known characters. The studio is reportedly closing in on David Ayer to direct Suicide Squad, which teams up a bunch of supervillains.

Warner Bros. did its big shareholder talk this morning, and took the opportunity to drop some big release date info. The biggest is the studio’s upcoming plans for superhero films, and massive DC movie plans were revealed.
Suicide Squad will be the first DC film to follow Batman v Superman, with a plan for release in 2016. Then things get really big. In 2017 we’ll see Wonder Woman and Justice League, with 2018 bringing The Flash (with Ezra Miller starring) and Aquaman. In 2019 WB plans Shazam and Justice League 2.
Finally, studio head Kevin Tsujihara says there are plans coming together for Cyborg (played by Ray Fisher in Batman v Superman), a Green Lantern reboot, and additional standalone Batman and Superman films. Read More »
Rumors have said that Darkseid, DC’s inter -dimensional villain who inspired Thanos over at Marvel, might be the bad guy for the upcoming Justic League film. Now a new rumor changes that up, saying that the League will instead ally against Braniac. (Though there’s no reason we couldn’t see both in the film in some way.) Along with that info, there’s rumor on the lineup of DC’s upcoming Suicide Squad film, though anyone who read the late ’80s incarnation of that comic won’t be surprised by the roster. Read More »

So far, Warner Bros.’ DC Universe has focused mostly on big, iconic figures like Superman and Batman. But the DC Comics stable stretches far beyond the Justice League, and now the studio is looking to bring some lesser known properties to the silver screen.
According to a new report, David Goyer is working on lower-budget adaptations of more obscure titles like Suicide Squad, Booster Gold, Deathstroke, and Team 7. Hit the jump for more details on these developing projects.

In the wake of the uber-massive-success of Marvel’s The Avengers, it wasn’t a huge surprise to hear that Warner Bros. had hired a writer to revive Justice League. They’re DC’s answer to the superhero team and a project has been in various stages of development for several years. The key to The Avengers, though, wasn’t just that it was a good movie. Much of its success was because it was more than a movie. The Avengers was an event with a four year, five film build up that started with Iron Man in 2008. Which begs the question, will Warner Bros. attempt to go the same route or will they jump right into a Justice League movie?
A report from Variety suggests the former. They’ve dug up that in addition to Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the Justice League news, and the Wonder Woman news, Warner Bros. has six other characters at various stages of development. Many people were surprised when King of Kong director Seth Gordon signed on to direct Four Christmases, the Vince Vaughn/Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy which comes out this Wednesday. I think everyone expected Gordon would either work within the world of documentaries or work in the realm of geek-focused films. Gordon revealed on last night’s The /Filmcast After Dark that he was gunning for the new He-Man live-action movie.
“I read a He-Man script that was really good,” Gordon said of Justin Marks’ screenplay Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe. “It’s great. It’s pretty awesome. It’s already been snatched up… I was too slow to get to it, but its gonna be great. He-Man’s origin story? C’mon, that’s going to be great!”
This also confirms LatinoReview‘s report from last week that Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson might now be attached to the project. I haven’t seen Four Christmases yet, but I hope that Gordon doesn’t become attached to too many romantic comedies. He recently got attached to a new project called Suicide Squad, which sounded to me like a losers version of Oceans 11. Gordon described the film on the podcast:
“Suicide Squad is basically like Bottle Rocket but set at the Kentucky Derby, where a bunch of misfits, barely, get away with a heist. And its about the Shenanigans that lead up to that.”
The comparison to Bottle Rocket definitely gets me excited. And if you’ve seen Wes Anderson’s debut film, then you know what I’m talking about.
King of Kong director Seth Gordon has signed on to direct Suicide Squad for Working Title Films and Universal Pictures. According to THR, the story follows a desperate con man, out on parole, who recruits a crew of amateur criminals to rip off the Kentucky Derby. Sounds kinda like if Oceans Eleven was made up of a team of losers and never-have-beens. Brother screenwriting team Matt and Billy Eddy penned the latest draft, based on an original script by Chris Johnson. Gordon makes his fictional feature film debut with the Reese Witherspoon/Vince Vaughn romantic comedy Four Christmases.
Meanwhile, our friends at FirstShowing were able to catch up with Gordon at the Four Christmases junket, and got an update on New Line’s fictional remake of The King of Kong. Last we heard, Scott Pilgrim screenwriter Michael Bacall was hired to pen the script. Gordon says that the remake will “be less of the talking heads” and will show moments they weren’t able to film in the process of making the documentary.
“But in terms of the story, it’s going to be a very similar story – about Wiebe losing his job, rediscovering Kong, thinking he’s the best in the world at something only to have it taken away by a guy who won’t let go of his title,” Gordon told FS. “We’re going to try, if we can, to really reference and use the documentary where possible. To me it’s about not compromising the original, if we can help it.”
New Line supposedly has “a really strong, aggressive commitment to it” and Gordon expects it to go into production “pretty soon”. But from the sound of the Suicide Squad announcement, probably not soon enough.
