This story and podcast was published on May 17th 2012, just after the release of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. I thought it would be fun to take a look back at our predictions from 27 months ago to see how things are panning out for phase two and three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of the predictions seem obvious in hindsight, like Germain predicting that Thanos wouldn’t be the villain of Avengers 2 and Jeff foreseeing that Thanos’ appearance during the Avengers end credits stinger was probably a set-up for another film, Guardians of the Galaxy. But one must remember this was recorded before a Guardians of the Galaxy movie was even announced, which happened months later at 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Enjoy!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a big movie. Big in scope, dense in story, and pivotal to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. It continues the story of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), also known as Captain America, as he begins to return to “normal” life after saving the world with some friends in The Avengers. He’s joined by fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), a soldier turned friend Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and a slew of others including, but not limited to, characters played by Sebastian Stan, Robert Redford, Frank Grillo, Georges St. Pierre, Cobie Smulders and Hayley Atwell. Like I said, it’s a big movie.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo do a solid job of molding all these moving parts into a story that, for the most part, makes sense. But even when the story gets a little too complicated and the exposition a bit too wordy, it’s quickly saved by its entertaining action and continual narrative twists. Many of these will change everything you thought you knew about the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And I’m not just talking about the two credits scenes. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a fun, worthy, if slightly bulky entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters April 4, be on the look out for Tony Stark’s Avengers Tower. As a hidden Easter Egg.
At the end of The Avengers, the Stark Tower was decimated, leaving only the “A” as a tease of what’s to come. There was also a brief scene where Stark is clearly seen working on an Avengers Tower. In Iron Man 3, Stark never visits New York as he’s plenty busy in California, Tennessee and Florida but that doesn’t mean the tower hasn’t been under construction. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for release one year from now, on April 4, 2014. So that’s exactly how long directors Anthony and Joe Russo will have to complete the film. Principal photography began Monday, and Disney released the first image along with a full press release. The release confirms the returns of Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, and the presence of new additions Robert Redford, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Georges St. Pierre and others. No one hires Robert Redford for a throwaway role. The announcement that the actor would play a part in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier came as a surprise, and brought a mystery: what’s his role? Most of the big parts are filled by the likes of Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, Toby Jones, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Captain America: The First Avenger stood out from most of the comic book movie pack because it offered something a bit different. In addition to being yet another superhero origin story, it was a WWII movie that heartily embraced the ’40s setting, rather than simply using it as window dressing.
The sequel, subtitled The Winter Soldier, will go into production soon with Chris Evans reprising his role as Cap, and Anthony and Joe Russo stepping in to direct. The film takes its title, and presumably much of its storyline, from the Ed Brubaker-penned storyline of the same name, in which Cap’s WWII sidekick Bucky (Sebastian Stan), thought dead, is revived as a Soviet assassin.
If that makes the Cap sequel sound like something that could be a Bourne sequel you might not be too far off, especially given the way Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is describing the movie. Read More »

Nick Fury is one of the more prominent characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having appeared in five out of the six titles to date. Yet he’s never actually appeared in his own standalone film. For a while, it seemed like a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie might be coming out after The Avengers, but as we’ve since learned, that project has since evolved into a TV series. So as of now, it looks like the closest thing to a Nick Fury movie we’ll be getting is Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
In a new interview, Jackson touched upon his role in the Captain America sequel, and cast doubt on whether a Nick Fury-centric film is even necessary at this stage. Read his comments after the jump.
