Key requirements for correct trademark use

1. Trademark Symbol:
   • Always use the correct trademark symbol with the first or most prominent appearance of the trademark in the body of text. The correct symbol is provided for each ARM trademark in the ARM Trademark List.
   • You do not have to be use trademark symbols in headlines unless there is no accompanying text, in which case you must use it.
   • Use trademark symbols in superscript or subscript (i.e. ^™ or ^®). However, you may use parentheses (TM) and (R) where this is not possible.
   • Do not use trademark symbols after any ARM product name, service name or technology name that is not an ARM trademark.
2. Approved Noun:
   • Always use trademarks as adjectives, accompanied by an approved noun. A list of approved nouns is provided for each ARM trademark in the ARM Trademark List.
   • Never use a trademark as a noun, a verb, or in the possessive or plural form. Your use will probably be incorrect if the sentence does not make grammatical sense without the trademark included in it.
   • You do not need to use an approved noun after any ARM product name or service name.
   • Please note the special rule for referential use of ARM's trademarks in the tab entitled "Referential / Prohibited Use."
3. Trademark Notice:
   • Always include the correct trademark notice for ARM's ownership of its trademarks in all materials. Suitable notices are provided for each ARM trademark in the ARM Trademark List.
4. Never alter ARM's trademarks in any way:
   • Do not alter the spelling or form of ARM's trademarks by abbreviating them, creating acronyms, translating them, joining them to other words, symbols or numbers (either as one word or with a hyphen - unless otherwise permitted, e.g. ARM^® Cortex^®-A15), or using improper capitalization. However, permitted capitalization occurs when using an ARM word trademark in headlines, titles or text where all of the surrounding words are shown in uppercase characters. In this situation, you may use the relevant ARM trademark in uppercase characters, provided that such use complies with these guidelines.
5. First use with the ARM trademark:
   • Where specified in the ARM Trademark List, always use the relevant ARM trademark preceded by the ARM word trademark in first use, e.g. ARM^® AMBA^®. You do not need to use the ARM trademark in each subsequent use of the relevant trademark.

Referential use of ARM's trademarks

You may refer to third party products containing ARM products and/or technology by using the word “-based” between the relevant ARM trademark and the end product that contains the relevant ARM product and/or technology. In this situation, you may use any appropriate noun after the word “-based” if it is accurate, fair and not misleading and it complies with these guidelines.

You may also indicate the relationship of your products and services to ARM’s products and services using accurate referential phrases. Such use is subject to these guidelines. For example, “…implements the ARM^® AMBA^® interface.”

Prohibited use of ARM's trademarks

1. Do not use any ARM logo without written authorization from ARM. Please refer to ARM Logo Permission Requests if you want permission to use an ARM logo.
2. Do not use inaccurate or misleading nouns after ARM’s trademarks. ARM’s trademarks are used for specific products and services.
3. Do not use an ARM trademark, slogan or logo (or any part of an ARM trademark, slogan or logo) as part of another trademark, slogan, logo or other name. This includes but is not limited to a company name, trade name, product name, service name, technology name, standard, domain name, social media name or handle.
4. Do not register an ARM trademark, slogan or logo (or any part of an ARM trademark, slogan or logo) either alone or as part of another trademark or other name. This includes, but is not limited to a company name, trade name, product name, service name, technology name, standard, domain name, social media name or handle.
5. Do not use ARM's trademarks more prominently than your own trademarks, company name, trade name, product name, service name or other name. You should distinguish such names visually from any ARM trademark or other name.
6. Do not use ARM’s trademarks to make fun of ARM or portray ARM in a negative way.
7. Do not use ARM’s trademarks in any manner that expresses or implies that ARM has any affiliation, sponsorship, endorsement, certification, or approval of your product, service or company.
8. Do not use ARM’s trademarks in false or misleading advertising.
9. Do not use ARM’s trademarks in connection with any defamatory, scandalous, pornographic, or other objectionable materials.
10. Do not manufacture, advertise, sell, distribute or otherwise give away any merchandise items bearing any ARM trademark, logo or other name without an express written trademark license from ARM.
11. Do not imitate any element of ARM’s logos, trade dress or product packaging.
12. Do not use or imitate any ARM tagline or slogan (including but not limited to the slogan "The Architecture for the Digital World^®”). This slogan is reserved for ARM’s use only and it is therefore not included in the ARM Trademark List.

Using ARM as a trade name or company name

As well as being a trademark, ARM is also a trade name or company name referring to ARM Limited (including its group companies). When ARM is used as a trade name or company name, it should not be followed by a trademark symbol or an approved noun. Trade names and company names are nouns, so they may be used in the possessive form. The first reference to ARM as trade name or company name should be to "ARM Limited" (or the relevant ARM group company name). Any subsequent reference to ARM as a trade name or company name can just be to “ARM”.

Third party use of ARM project names

ARM refers to its products and services that are under development using project names (otherwise known as code names). Any disclosure by ARM of its project names to any third party will be under strict terms of confidentiality. Third parties should not use any ARM project name in the marketing of the relevant ARM product or service. Third parties should use the correct commercial name given to any newly released ARM product or service, which may or may not include one or more ARM trademarks. For example, ARM's Atlas processor project was launched commercially in 2012 as the ARM^® Cortex^®-A57 processor.
