Singles may aspire to be a Big Chill from Seattle, but it is really a fizzled St. Elmo's Fire with rowdier music.

So lightweight that you're likely to start forgetting it before it's even over.

There's no shortage of tender moments in this comedy, and former rock journalist Cameron Crowe cleverly transforms 'real' problems into crackerjack material.

Crowe suffuses the film with tender humour and affection as the characters, most of them living in the same apartment block, swap stories, ponder sexual come-ons where none exist, and remain resolute in the face of emotional horrors.

Mr. Crowe has an exceptional ability to enjoy such characters without a trace of condescension.

A diverting collection of interwoven vignettes.

Nobody's saying it's perfect, but it is hugely entertaining, a warm-yet-honest look at sex, love and relationships set against the growth of Seattle's grunge scene.

The film is stirred with humour and affection while achieving a pleasing blend of the city's caf and grunge cultures.

Funny and well-observed and, most notably, plays to its audience's intelligence rather than its libido.

Crowe has created a smart, rumpled world where real people relate to each other about real feelings, using real words.

Watch for endless cameos and stars who would later go on to much higher heights.

Excellent romantic comedy except for the Bridget Fonda/Matt Dillon resolution. HE DOESN'T DESERVE HER!!!

A funny and telling look at a group of twentysomethings and their struggles to establish meaningful and intimate relationships.

Aimless but amusing slice of Gen X life from Cameron Crowe.

Great dialogue and engaging characters drom writer/director Crowe.

A few great moments in a well-played comedy-drama

Intelligent and witty ensemble rom-com for the grunge generation.

Cameron Crowe does it again. The perfect combination of comedy, romance and awesome music.

Brilliant dialogue, killer musical cues and hilarious comic beats. It made me happy, it made me cry... Right movie, right time.

As meandering and ultimately clueless as the post-collegiate coffeehouse crowd at its core ... that's why it works.

We're never worried that these couples won't get together -- but watching the journey is fun anyway.

-
- Cliff Poncier: [after Janet fakes a sneeze to get his attention] Hey, babe? Don't get me sick; I'm playing this weekend.
