According to Netcraft, the number of web-facing computers deployed by Amazon
has grown more than thirty-fold in just four years.
Netcraft found 4,600 Amazon-controlled web-facing computers in May 2009; but
in May 2013, it found 158,000 web-facing computers, on 164,000 IP addresses.
Amazon's Elastic Compute service, EC2, provides on-demand virtual-computer
instances billed per hour and is currently available from all nine AWS
regions. Notable EC2 users include Netflix, Instagram, and the DuckDuckGo
search engine.
The number of websites hosted on Amazon's 158,000 webfacing computers has
also increased, Netcraft noted - from 6.8M in September 2012 to 11.6M in May
2013, a 71% increase.
Amazon's CTO Werner Vogels gave the first ever Cloud Expo opening keynote, in
November 2008 in San Jose, California.
