Beginning a New Decade
Q Magazine was launched a decade ago, in the dawn of the digital information age. The first mobile news service delivered via SMS was launched in Finland in 2000, and it was not only a precursor to a wealth of information services including a social media network and mobile environment, but it was also a harbinger of the evolution from print to the digital information age. Smart Sustainability - join ARM's research project and receive free benchmarking opportunities

ARM and IBLF have launched a survey on how the technology sector is addressing global sustainability issues.

The brief online questionnaire will take no more than 5 minutes and all participants will be sent a soft copy of the final "Smart Sustainability" report.

There are significant extra benefits if you then have time to go on and complete a more detailed survey, which will take around twenty minutes:

  • a (confidential) report benchmarking your company's performance against other respondents
  • the right to use this data, and the final "Smart Sustainability" report, in your own publications
  • $10 donation to the East African Drought Campaign from ARM for every full survey completed
The resulting report is assured excellent coverage through ARM's participation in the UN LEAD initiative and the associated activities. The International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) is working with ARM to compile this report. Please click here to complete the questionnaire.

We would like to thank you in advance for your participation. If you have any queries about the questionnaire, please contact Bridget Cochrane, Director of the Digital Partnership at IBLF [email protected].

ARM Powered Dive Computer Watch

SCUBAPRO-UWATEC has unveiled the sophisticated SCUBAPRO Meridian dive computer watch, designed for depths of up to 120 meters.

The watch is powered by Energy Micro's EFM32G890 Gecko 32MHz, 32-bit microcontroller, based on the powerful ARM Cortex-M3 processor. Requiring just 180µA/MHz while active, the device provides the flexibility of five MCU sleep modes, three of which draw less than a microamp of current. The device has been designed to be powered by a single CR2032 lithium battery.

While diving, the Meridian can be configured to display a variety of dive information including depth, dive time, decompression status, and water temperature. Above the surface it handles remaining desaturation time, no-fly time, and features a built in thermometer and altimeter that is perfect for mountain treks. ARM Powered Microsoft Surface Tablet Debuts

Microsoft has taken the wraps of its Surface tablet, running Windows RT, the company’s first operating system for ARM-based systems - and featuring a keyboard that doubles as a cover and a touchpad for content creation.

The thin 676 gram Surface tablet, powered by a Nvidia Corp processor, built around ARM, incorporates a 10.6 inch screen and comes in 32GB and 64GB memory sizes.

The Surface will be for sale online and in Microsoft's new brick-and-mortar stores in the United States. A launch date has yet been set, but Microsoft is slated to launch Windows RT in the fall.

NXP Ships ARM Cortex Based MCUs With 128 KB Flash

NXP Semiconductors N.V has taken the wraps off the  LPC11U30 series of easy-to-use, very low-power USB microcontrollers based on the ARM Cortex-M0 processor.

The LPC11U30 extends memory options for the LPC11U00 family with up to 4 KB of EEPROM, 12 KB of SRAM and 128 KB of NXP's embedded flash with 256 bytes of erase sector. With extra-low active power consumption as low as 110 uA/MHz, the LPC11U30 microcontrollers are ideal for USB 2.0 applications requiring large memory sizes for local storage such as gaming mice and keyboards, glucose meters, and remote-controlled toys.

ARM Powered Android Tablet For Less Than $100

Idolian.com has unveiled the 7 inch ARM powered Android tablet PC - IdolPad Plus.

IdolPad Plus runs on an ARM Cortex-A8 Chipset, 1.2 GHz CPU and includes 512MB, 7” Multi Touch Resistive Screen, Front Facing Camera, 360 G-Sensor and, HDMI output on Android 4.0 OS. It also offers Wi-Fi connectivity – all for the promotional price of $98.

Freescale Vybrid Automotive Solution

Freescale Semiconductor has extended its Vybrid controller solutions portfolio into the automotive market with silicon-enabled software designed to bring connected radios, entry-level infotainment systems and reconfigurable instrument clusters to mainstream automobiles.

Freescale’s Vybrid controller solutions are built around an asymmetrical multiprocessing architecture platform integrating  ARM Cortex-A and Cortex-M cores, reducing complexity and cost while increasing system security for automotive applications.

Vybrid automotive devices are ARMv7 compatible, allowing designers to maximize software and hardware reuse and accelerate time to market.
