Guess who benefits when two industry giants compete with each other offering
exactly the same set of services? It is RightScale!
While the Cloud ecosystem is still recovering from the euphoria of witnessing
Microsoft and Google launch IaaS, RightScale is busy porting their
ServerTemplates to both the Public Clouds. They are in an enviable position
where every new IaaS provider wants to be a part of their platform.
This is not a common phenomenon that we see in the industry. RightScale saw
the opportunity pretty early in the cycle and got into the game much ahead of
the time and that seems to pay off now! It’s not just Microsoft and Google,
even HP partnered with RightScale much before they entered into the public
beta in May. RightScale now has an impressive portfolio of supported Public
Clouds and Private Clouds that includes AWS, Rackspace, SoftLayer, Tata,

One of the key tenets of the Cloud is self-service. Anyone from an individual
entrepreneur to an enterprise CIO with a valid credit card can subscribe to
the Cloud. This has been the biggest driver of Cloud adoption especially
among the startups and SMEs. While this is definitely an advantage for the
Cloud providers and Cloud consumers, there is one entity in the ecosystem
that is intimidated by this paradigm. And, that is the reseller community
which is also known as the channel or the Value Added Reseller (VAR). Before
we analyze whether Cloud is a threat or an opportunity for ... (more)

As part of our presence at Cloud Expo in New York two weeks ago, we conducted
a survey at our TwinStrata booth (in return from some quite popular storage
hogs).
More than 100 attendees participated and the results were rather
enlightening.
For example:
5 out of 6 respondents indicated that they were either already using or plan
to use cloud storage in some capacity – making it the most widely planned
cloud initiative (even more than software as a service). Although security
was the most frequently cited objection to cloud storage, more than half
(58%) of respondents did not ind... (more)
As the Government’s own Digital Advantage paper recommends, the key to
addressing Canada’s innovation gap is for CIO’s to adopt more new
technologies like Cloud Computing, and the public sector can ignite this
trend by leading the way with their own adoption.
Don Drummond makes a similar recommendation in his report. Recommendation
16-10 says: The government should shift its service delivery of information
and information technology (I⁢) from in-house to external sources, where
feasible.
However as this Telus press release and study reports, the reality is that in
Canada is s... (more)

Not only were there more solution providers on the expo floor, there appeared to me quite a few additional sessions to attend. There also appeared to be more attendees, and in greater diversity than the previous year. Of course, all of this impro... Reads: 6,045 By Larry Bettino Did you know that ninety percent of the data in the world has been created in the last two years? Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion (or 2.518) bytes of data, according to IBM.
As corporations across all industries globally are struggling with how to retain, aggregate and analyze this mounting volume of what the industry refers to as Big Data, it also provides a unique opportunity for innovative startups that recognize the business prospects Big Data presents. Big Data is not just unlocking new information but new sources of economic and business value.
Interactivity is driving Big Data, with people and machines both consuming and creating it. Digital companies focused on becoming good at aggregating and analyzing the data created by the end users of their product, who then provide their customers with solid insights taken from that data are at a distinct competitive advantage over others in the marketplace. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc.
Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.
