Google Buys Quickoffice

Quickoffice gives Google a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation program that works on mobile devices

Google said Tuesday that it's bought Quickoffice for some mystery sum. It raised $28.5 million since it was started in 1997.

Quickoffice gives Google a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation program that works on mobile devices - better than Google Apps.

Google prizes the widgetry for its native interoperability with Microsoft Office according to the five-sentence announcement engineering director Alan Warren put on Google's official blog. Google means to use that capability in subscription-based Google Apps. When that'll happen is anybody's guess.

Quickoffice figures it's on 300 million devices including Android, iPhone, iPad, HP webOS and Symbian platforms. Users, which it claims to pick up at the rate of 60,000 a day, can view, edit, sync and create Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on their mobile device for $15-$20. It also ships through major carriers.

Microsoft is expected to put Office on Windows 8 tablets - x86 and ARM - and is even said to be working on a version for the iPad.
