BLOG: Leyden writes regularly on Big Data topics here.

RECENT BIG DATA QUOTE:

"There are two kinds of Big Data: Big Data (for analytics) and Big Unstructured Data.

The new paradigm that will help us store massive amounts of unstructured data is Object Storage. Object Storage systems are uniformly scalable pools of storage that are accessible through a REST interface. Files – objects – are dumped into the pool and an identifier is kept to locate the object when it is needed. Applications that are designed to run on top of object storage will use these identifiers through the REST protocol. A good analogy is parking your car Valet vs. self park. When you self park you have to remember the lot, the floor, the aisle etc (file system); with Valet you get a receipt when you give your keys and you will later use that receipt to get your car back. Big Data for analytics is a paradigm that became popular in the previous decade. "

Very few trends in IT have generated as much buzz as cloud computing. In his session at the 10th International Cloud Expo, Citrix VP Peder Ulander will cut through the hype and quickly clarify the ontology for cloud computing. The bulk of the conversation will focus on the open source software that can be used to build compute clouds (infrastructure-as-a-service) and the complementary open source management tools that can be combined to automate the management of cloud computing environments. ...
One of the most widely asked questions about Big Data today is, “How do we get valuable analytics from Big Data?” Or, how do we get the prize? As data continues to grow exponentially, so does the variety of data (structured and unstructured) coming from humans, machines and applications. In order to pull valuable information from it all, proper data gathering is critical, and the output of that data needs to be timely and accurate, with a flexible method of delivery. Unfortunately, it’s not easy...
