BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic is two different experiences smashed together: a single-player role-playing game fused to a traditional MMO framework. What it does so well – story-driven leveling – abruptly stops when you hit the level cap, leaving you with a decision: unsubscribe, grind through dungeons and PvP arenas like you would in any other MMO, or create an alternate character and start leveling again.
With the 1.2 patch's Legacy system, BioWare encourages you to make another character. By running a character to the cap you unlock a variety of bonuses for other characters, making a subsequent 1 – 50 run a little bit more interesting. Considering how colossal a task it has to be for BioWare to generate unique story content for all eight of The Old Republic's classes, this approach makes sense. There's already plenty of story content in the live game right now, and the Legacy update gives players with enough free time to see it all more ways to have fun.
For those not interested in leveling another character, there's a new PvP Warzone and PvE dungeons. You can see an overview of some of the other additions, including the ability to tweak your user interface, in the video below.
Have you been playing around with The Old Republic since the patch? What do you think of 1.2? Specifically, what do you think about the Tauntaun Ram pet BioWare is giving out to active subscribers?
BioWare is also giving 30 days of free game time to players with a level 50 character, which is a little bit better than a Tauntaun Ram pet, no?
