One of the most anticipated video game of the year arrived last week with the worldwide launch of “Gears of War 3.” Following more than 22,000 midnight madness launch events, Microsoft and Epic Games today announced that the Xbox 360 exclusive sold more than three million copies worldwide in its first week since release, cementing “Gears 3” as the biggest game of 2011 and catapulting the franchise beyond one billion dollars in lifetime sales.
In just one week, “Gears 3” has already grossed more than any 2011 video game to date. In addition to topping this year’s sales charts, the “Gears of War” franchise joins the elite ranks of only a select few game franchises to surpass one billion dollars in lifetime sales. Taking the milestone even further, “Gears” now stands as the first Xbox 360 exclusive franchise introduced this console generation to eclipse the billion dollar milestone.
“‘Gears of War’ was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the platform ever since,” said Microsoft Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer. “‘Gears of War 3’ kicked off the biggest Christmas period in Xbox history, setting the standard for the kind of amazing, action-packed experiences gamers should expect on Xbox 360 this year.”

Gears of War 3 Dominates UK Charts[ Comment ] 7:58 PST | PlanetRaptoR | Print NewsGears of War 3 fought off competition from the likes of F1 2011, as well as older titles like Dead Island to enter the UK Xbox 360 and multi-platform charts at the number one spot.
According to UK charts company Chart-Track, Gears 3 and F1 2011 entered both charts in the first and second place respectively, for the week ending September 24, 2011. Previous top-spot holder Dead Island slid to number 3 in both charts, while Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, which held the number 2 place last week, fell to sixth place in the Xbox 360 charts and seventh place in the multi-platform charts.

Gears of War 3 Easter Eggs[ Comment ] 13:24 PST | PlanetRaptoR | Print NewsEpic Games has a history of hiding surprises for eagle-eyed gamers in its titles, and Gears of War 3 is no exception. Just 24 hours after the official release, reports of Easter eggs in the single-player campaign and multiplayer modes are already starting to surface.
Our comrades over at IGN 360 has compiled a complete round-up of what's been discovered so far, including a dancing wretch, fancy new headgear for the Cole Train and some unique collectibles.
Today design director Cliff Bleszinski has given an early indication that unlike Gears 2's DLC, the extra content planned for Gears 3 will take place away from the central characters, just like add-ons for games like GTA IV and Borderlands. In Cliff's words, speaking in an interview with The Telegraph --
One thing I can tell you is that you’re not going to see Marcus or Dom or Cole in it. I believe that DLC should be unique and cool, like Lost and the Damned, Gay Tony, Mad Moxie’s Underdome Riot. All those kind of things.
That shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, given that Gears of War 3 is the trilogy's final chapter. Still, the Gears universe is a diverse one with plenty of interesting characters. At least Epic isn't trying to sell anyone Brumak armor.

The soundtrack contains 31 tracks from the game, composed by the highly-acclaimed Steve Jablonsky, who provided Gears of War 2's soundtrack, along with music for a number of Hollywood movies.

“Gears of War 3 is huge. It was like scoring a summer blockbuster. I love the guys at Epic because to them, the characters and the story are just as important as the gameplay. Yes, the gameplay is awesome and badass, but there is a ton of depth to these characters, and I think that’s a big part of why so many people love this franchise. Epic’s commitment to story allows me to dig deeper musically and really have some fun with the score.”

Everything about Gears 3 exudes polish. On the surface, it easily outperforms its two predecessors. Crisp visuals, fractured lighting and billowy smoke effects bring the world to life, giving this final and ever-decaying vision of Sera a tangible sense of place.
