Serenity now! Consider this the Frank Costanza inspired rage-controlling mantra of the Diablo 3 Demon Hunter, who must strike a balance between murderous, offensive rage and calm, defensive discipline. See the red and blue meter mechanic at work in the latest Diablo 3 class trailer within. Just remember that "serenity now" thing doesn't work. It just bottles up the anger before you eventually explode. Read More »
Are you ready? Because if you're not, it's time to get ready... to get ready. Bethesda's Pete Hines has announced that an announcement is on the way, and while I prefer to avoid these types of vacuous teasers, this one is worth taking note of because of one word: Skyrim. It appears the anticipated first DLC installment for The Elder Scrolls V will arrive sometime this month. Read More »
Portal 2, The Witcher 2, Deus Ex, Skyrim, and Orcs Must Die! Yes, the new standard in ACTION TOWER (all-caps yell mandatory), earned a spot on my personal Best of 2011 list. That's why I'm pleased to pass along Robot Entertainment's announcement this morning that Orcs Must Die 2, complete with a sassy Sorceress side-kick for co-op play, is coming this summer. Read More »
One of the most common criticisms I've heard about MOBAs, often from people who I suspect would thoroughly enjoy them if they'd only jump in and try, is that they're too intimidating. There's too much of a learning curve, too much new stuff to wrap one's head around, and too many opportunities to terminally botch things for the rest of the team. But that fear shouldn't deter you, because the reality is you probably know a lot more about how to play MOBAs than you think. Here are five sets of training wheels that lots of potential MOBA-lovers have been using for years without even knowing it. Read More »
This one was a squeaker: with less than three hours remaining, another Kickstarter dream project has reached its goal and become a real game in development by Serellan Studios. Takedown, which describes itself as a "realistic squad-based tactical shooter" and "a thinking-person's shooter," is a long way from completion, though. The $200,000 raised from gamers will take it as far as the alpha stage, at which point Serellan will have something to shop around to publishers for a larger investment to complete development. Awww, they're so adorable. Runic Games has just unveiled seven pet companions for its upcoming hack 'n slash RPG, Torchlight 2. The pets are all cute and cuddly critters, and include a housecat, a bulldog, a ferret and... umm wait a second... is that a velociraptor crossed with a cassowary? Dear God, it is. He isn't adorable at all. In fact, this so-called "chakawary" looks like he could tear a man's throat out with his disfigured, prehistoric beak. Oh, the horror. Read More »
While Bluehole Studio's upcoming MMORPG Tera sure looks action-packed, it turns out some of this action actually won't be packed into the game at launch. Publisher En Masse Entertainment has updated its official forums, telling fans that Tera's player-vs-player battlegrounds will be delayed until "late this summer". The reason? The battlegrounds still need a bit more spick, span and "polish." Read More »
It's been a long time since Agent 47 has donned his killin' gloves (seven years, to be exact), but later this year everyone's favorite well-dressed assassin will be making a triumphant return in Hitman: Absolution. Square Enix's latest trailer for the stealth-shooter focuses on a level where Agent 47 needs to rescue a sleeping girl. Along the way, he face-shanks pretty much every thug in sight. Ouch. Kickstarter is kicking along a lot of very cool games at the moment, but not every idea is drowning in player funding. Christian Allen's idea for a hardcore tactical shooter called "Takedown" is one of those games that might just miss out on becoming a reality. The game, which harks back to the original Rainbow Six and SWAT titles, has already garnered around $160,000 in financial backing... but it still needs quite a bit more. Time is ticking. Read More »
Heard about Notch's new game, Mars Effect? How about Blizzard announcing Diablo 3 for the Wii? Here's an easy way to keep track of the annual insanity: check out the
On the heels of the ending controversy, Mass Effect 3 has been rocked by another scandal as BioWare and EA have proven unwilling -- or perhaps unable -- to produce Commander Shepard's birth certificate. Read More »
You know, we miss the '90s. We miss that illusion of peace in the world, the downtime between the Cold War and the War on Terrorism, where conflicts seemed so localized and remote. We miss having a stable economy. We miss the days when the Internet seemed new and interesting rather than a bloated mess of ads and memes. But most of all, gosh darn it, we miss the games. The sequel to the 2005 sleeper hit, Sniper Elite, isn't due for release until May, but many fans are already practicing their sniper skills in eager anticipation (e.g. slow breathing exercises... or not emptying their bladder for 48-hour periods). Thankfully, sniper training is about to get a whole lot easier, because publisher 505 Games has told Joystiq a demo of Sniper Elite V2 will be available "sometime" in April for both PC and consoles.

Those of you currently playing the beta of Valve's hardcore shooter, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, should notice a little change this weekend. The latest update to the FPS brings with it two new maps: "Shoots" and "Baggage". Both maps are tied to the new Arsenal Arms Race mode, which rewards players with new weapons after every kill. The patch also includes yet another "classic" map... this time, a re-jigged version of Aztec. Read More »
