Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum UsersThe update will go out to all Steam forum and account holders soon.We continue our investigation of last year's intrusion with the help of outside security experts. In my last note about this, I described how intruders had accessed our Steam database but we found no evidence that the intruders took information from that database. That is still the case.
Recently we learned that it is probable that the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords.
We do not have any evidence that the encrypted credit card numbers or billing addresses have been compromised. However as I said in November it's a good idea to watch your credit card activity and statements. And of course keeping Steam Guard on is a good idea as well.
We are still investigating and working with law enforcement authorities. Some state laws require a more formal notice of this incident so some of you will get that notice, but we wanted to update everyone with this new information now.

Well I'm actually quite surprised this issue hadn't come up earlier, but Blizzard has filed a lawsuit against Valve for using the DOTA name, which Blizzard argues, is associated with Blizzard in the mind of the consumer.
In contrast to Blizzard, Applicant Valve Corporation ("Valve") has never used the mark DOTA in connection with any product or service that currently is available to the public. By attempting to register the mark DOTA, Valve seeks to appropriate the more than seven years of goodwill that Blizzard has developed in the mark DOTA and in its Warcraft III computer game and take for itself a name that has come to signify the product of years of time and energy expended by Blizzard and by fans of Warcraft III. Valve has no right to the registration it seeks. If such registration is issued, it not only will damage Blizzard, but also the legions of Blizzard fans that have worked for years
with Blizzard and its products, including by causing consumers to falsely believe that Valve's products are affiliated, sponsored or endorsed by Blizzard and are related or connected to Warcraft III.
I'm sure this has nothing to do with the upcoming Starcraft 2 Mod Blizzard has been working on called Blizzard Dota. Neither company currently has the Dota name trademarked, but Blizzard is confident that because Warcraft III was required to play the original Dota mod that they've got a strong enough case to block Valve from claiming that copyright.
I'm just sad to see two of the best game developers ever fighting like this, can't we all just be friends? *Sniff*
Happy Friday everybody! So it turns out that the 'Diablo 3 will kick your ass' video I posted was actually a couple of months old, but easiness complaints over on the Diablo 3 forums are still alive and rampant, so probably was a pertinent move by Blizzard to re-release it to ease complaints. What we don't know yet, is what Blizzard will do to address their foul-mouthed voice actors. I kind of like it...
In response to the many grumblings and mumblings of Diablo III being all 'too easy' based on the beta so far, Blizzard released this video to ease your fears that Diablo 3 won't be hardcore enough, or will be too easy. Sounds awesome, I say bring it on! In a side note, today on their earnings call, they mentioned they expected to not have any games released first quarter, but two for the year - giving credit of course to the idea that it has once again been delayed, beyond what many would consider 'early 2012' into at least the second quarter.
I think I found myself wishing that just about everything featured actually made it into the game at launch. Unfortunately it's probably best to not get your hopes up that you'll ever get to see any of it, no matter how cool it seems. If we're lucky expansion packs might have sprinkles of the content shown here and there, but odds are most of the Game Jam content will be locked away internally at Bethesda never to see the light of day again.

Double Fine's head honcho Tim Schafer announced the launch of a new Kickstarter campaign in which he's looking to raise about $400,000 for a new point-and-click adventure game called "Adventure". Yep, we're talking about an old school Sierra / LucasArts experience. If funding is achieved $300k would go towards the development of Adventure, with the remaining $100k going to a full scale documentary type experience. The documentary seems to be in progress already, and will cover the production of Adventure as it comes together.
Considering Schafer's previous background with the old school adventure scene, I think this is definitely something worth getting behind. To get the full details, head on over to the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter page.
Update: Holy shit, in less than six hours the Adventure Kickstarter campaign has raised over $350,000! Surprisingly it's still scheduled to run for another 33 days. Any excess money raised will go in to the game according to Schafer.
Update #2: At over $800,000 as of this update the Kickstarter Twitter feed has been updated with word that the Adventure campaign has already broken records for most funds raised in 24 hours, and highest number of backers.
Update #3: The $1mil mark has been reached in less than 24-hours, making Double Fine's Adventure the most funded Kickstarter project to date, on top of the other records broken previously. Here's a pic of the Double Fine team minus Tim Schafer celebrating the achievement.
Remember when it was annouced that the long awaited Creation Kit would launch today, and include a little something special? Well it looks like Fall of the Core Vol. 1 is that little something.
To celebrate the opening of the Steam Workshop for Skyrim, Valve and Bethesda have teamed up to bring you the Portal 2 Space Core mod, which will let the aggressively space-centric little robot tag along on your adventures in Tamriel.
Also, since Skyrim was the only major release of 2011 without Nolan North in it, you should consider this mod a patch to fix that problem. You can now feel free to include Skyrim in the "Nolan North" section of your video game library, which is to say, your video game library.
Sweet, now bring on the flood of user created content (almost 200 Skyrim mods already)! Anyone sad it wasn't horse armor?
Tim Schafer has apparently been pitching proposals to make a sequel to the acclaimed Psychonauts with no success. Enter Notch, all around nice guy, indie developer with some cash, and oh, an offer to fund Psychonauts 2. Notch later confirmed that he is serious, and verified the he and Schafer are actively discussing the proposition. All in all, pretty fantastic news for any Psychonauts or Schafer fans out there, and I think a pretty cool tale if it all works out.
"...if you're looking for bang for your buck, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has it in droves. Then again, if you're looking for an immersive adventure backed by combat that doesn't only put other RPGs to shame, but in fact many action games, too, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has that as well."1-Up - B+
"Reckoning stands as a triumph; it's a first-time RPG from a studio known for RTS games, and a new property from a new company. It's a bold and audacious game that impresses me enough to wonder what its follow-up will be like. And, to circle back, it reminds me of the first time I heard The College Dropout: I can trace its roots and identify what he's sampling from, but overall, it's a damn good first effort."Games Radar - 8 / 10
"Amalur does a lot of things better than some of the best out there. The combat is stronger than Skyrim’s by a long shot, and the world feels more alive than games like Fable. It tells a good story well, and lays the foundation for a series we hope to see more of in the future, fate be damned."Gamespot - 7.5 / 10
"How much you love Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning depends on what you look for in a role-playing game. Let's say you long for a pervasive sense of time and place, for a great story featuring memorable characters, or for varied quests given weight by superb context. If that's you, then Kingdoms of Amalur will disappoint."
At launch players can fly just one plane for free, the Vans RV-6A two-seater with a single engine, throughout the "Big Island" of Hawaii. If that's not enough, for ten bucks of your hard earned MSP the "Hawaiian Adventure Pack" can be picked up over Games for Windows LIVE, which further expands the territory to cover the remaining Hawaiian islands, and provides access to another aircraft, along with twenty extra missions. We're told that among the planned aircraft for the title are the Maule M-7-260C, and the North American P-51 Mustang.
To learn more, head on over to the official website. We've also been sent a link to the new behind-the-scenes Aircraft trailer, which you can take a look at below. Neato!
I was browsing the Diablo III Forums when I found this Direct 3D filter that does a pretty good job at fixing some of the chief complaints against Diablo III's graphics style. Tired of the 'muddy' textures and lack of detail? How about the 'cartoony' colors and style?
Well there are currently 11 flavors of filter options you can use to get the grittier Diablo III you've been dreaming of. Personally I like to take it all the way to the Hardcore, but if you want to keep more of the colors or eliminate the sharpness, there are options for you as well.
The best thing about this filter is it is not a mod, and therefore doesn't violate any user agreements. See the video below, as well as all of the download links and full instructions after the break.
So here's something that up until now only the VE crew knew about. You see, your homeboy Ohm has actually been a college student this entire time. I never really spoke of it because I didn't want to be perceived in the wrong way. You know, either as the punk teenager (which I most definitely am not), or the old-timer that's way too late to the party (which I guess I kind of am). Anyways, just days ago I finally received my associate's degree with honors diploma in the mail. I've also earned enough credits in both business and psychology to pursue either as a major.
It's kind of a big deal for me, and something that I'm really proud of. This is primarily because I never really had the opportunity to go to college when I was younger (long story, but I had to start taking care of myself at 16). The decision to start school as an adult was kind of last minute, and followed some other significant life events. I'm where I'm at now though, and in a couple of years I should have a bachelor's degree in business administration. The problem is a number of opportunities out there most likely won't fit with the situation I'm in right now, and will continue to be in.
So do me a favor my friends, and role-play a little Dr.Sbaitso for me. Should I try to monetize my Youtube channel while simultaneously sharing content here at VE? Seek out freelance reviews or news spots elsewhere? Get serious about branching off an external site on the side with some other VE pals? Become a successful dropout like Bill Gates? It's like a choose your adventure game, except you'll help me choose mine! I do love Youtube, but I don't think I'd ever see myself doing crazy shit like this:
