Well the year 2011 had a lot of video game characters getting one year older and hey probably the biggest name this year had to be The Legend of Zelda series hitting that quarter century mark. See I grew up with Legend of Zelda but I really didn't like the first game so I skipped the second. What hooked me into the series was the timeless Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, which I still own for my SNES. I can go through a whole article about how a Link to the Past could get any gamer hooked on Zelda, but I am here to list my favorite Zelda's.
A quick thing I just want to say about the Legend of Zelda, Link, and Nintendo is thank you. The game is exactly what you dreamed, I feel as I am Link the hero and I am the one exploring the world, becoming stronger as the game goes on. The puzzles are enticing, the music is amazing, the story is movie screenplay great, and of course the gameplay is awesome. I have enjoyed most of the games team Nintendo and LoZ has spun out for us and the affect it has had on my gaming life!
The Legend of Zelda is: "a mixture of action, puzzles, adventure/battle gameplay, exploration, and questing. These elements have remained constant throughout the series, but with refinements and additions featured in each new game. "
The Legend
QUICK NEW EDIT: I would like to list my top 5 items in the game. While most of the items seem to generally stay the same in the series...each item is in fact different
5- Arrows
Arrows are an awesome part of the Zelda series, especially in its 3D games. The arrows allow for multiple mini-games, help solve puzzles, and hey they help defeat Ganon a lot.....he sorta hates these .
4- Roc's Cape
Roc's Cape is a unique item only found in 2D Zelda games. Why? Well it lets Link jump like mario and get to new places that were before unattainable. The only problem with these bad boys is apparently you can't job over rocks....
What the hell is that?
3- Hookshot
Hookshots are freaking cool. That's it I mean yea the Longshot was pretty cool in Ocarina of Time but then in Twilight Princess getting two of them and like going through the whole sky dungeon, traveling like that...it was badass. Oh yea they also stun enemies and get you items far away but who cares.
gotcha
2- Boomerang
Boomerang's suck in 3D Zelda but yet for some reason you always need them. However in 2D Zelda's upgrading your boomerang to a magic boomerang usually meant that you were no longer rolling/running for ruppees you can just throw this bad boy all over the screen and CONTROL it....pretty handy.
1- Shield
The most important item in the game not named your sword or the triforce. Without this shield you are as good as goose meat...aka DEAD. Shields may not be used "as much" in the 2D Zelda's but hey you need them when your fighting almost any boss and in 3D Zelda's without out your shield....well let's say it's free reign on chopping.
buy me one
Ok the Legend of Zelda has roughly about 15 games so I will list the games in order of my ranking in a "Top 10" obviously the ones not listed are not in my top 10...quick note I hate Majora's Mask so don't ask why it isn't in the top 10 it's a horrible game.
10 - Four Swords (Multiplayer Game)
Why is Four Swords your 10th favorite Zelda or even on this list? Well Four Swords is the first multiplayer game for Zelda and really is something you don't appreciate till you try. First off, the 4 Swords had a new style for Gameboy Link, which would later be used in Minish Cap GBA, and re-introduced the Legend of Zelda handheld series to the Gameboy Advanced. The first time I played 4 swords multiplayer (don't forget it came with the amazing Legend of Zelda LttP) I was instantly entertained. With Young Link's voice, the clean new cut graphics, picking up my friend throwing him in lava, then realizing I need his help to solve puzzles even though we are competing aganist each other, and the tributes to old Zelda Gameboy games (the Chain Chomp). You really need to find a friend to play 4 swords, kinda makes Link seem more fun.

9- Oracle of Seasons/Ages
Oracle of Seasons/Ages I was excited to play because the last Zelda for the Gameboy was a masterpiece itself, the only difference was we were getting two games for the price of...well two. The gameplay is smooth, although a little confusing at first when you were just thrown into a new season, or the past with almost no idea what to do... In addition game mechanics were probably a little better than Link's Awakening, the music is great, the story is magnificent (don't forget you have to beat both to get the real ending), and although it is a Zelda game I recommend this only really for fans.

8- Four Swords Adventure (GCN)
Probably the most underrated of all the Zelda's on here. Four Swords Adventure had one major flaw....it was a multiplayer game that really didn't allow multiplayer. Let me explain, the game came with the GBA-GCN connector right? Well a lot of people did not have the said connector and the ONLY way to play multiplayer in the game was to have more than one, which stinks. But now let me get into why this is a good game; Four Swords Adventure is one of the more difficult Zelda games. It is not played like an ordinary Zelda as you go through different "lands", which have stages (think Bomberman) but you still have to play Zelda gameplay; solving puzzles, defeating enemies, helping NPCs. This game is pretty long and some of the puzzles make you go AHHHH (pun intended).
I really enjoyed all my time playing this game and learning of the new abilities of the 4 sword. To be able to control all 4 Links, or one separately at a time to do some advanced puzzles were very fun. While I do imagine the game to be more fun with other players, it definitely would have been a lot more frustrating considering these puzzles were hard enough by yourself (now imagine someone who didn't listen). The mega-mob fights were awesome though.

7- Link's Awakening
Link's Awakening, the first Zelda game I ever played, and man I still own my original Gameboy Cartridge, in fact it is right next to me as I type next to my Mario Land. Link's Awakening...was confusing for the good old me (it came out in 1993 so I was 2-3 and I didn't play it till about 3 years later) all I knew was if I missed what the Owl kaepora gaebora said I was basically screwed because I had no idea what to do lol. In which lead to many restarts of the game or asking my older brother LOL. So, after many, many playthroughs I beat the game when I was 9 and everyone had the GBC version DX. I will never forget running into the fake Mario, seeing the chain chomps, the awesome final boss, or my favorite, stealing from the shop guy. I always had enough Ruppees but stealing from him was so fun and then coming back to get killed with his Raiden powers. Thank you LoZ: Link's Awakening for getting me into Zelda.
always thought yoshi was in that egg even though I knew LOL
6- Wind Waker
At first...I hated Wind Waker...not because of the cel-shaded design, I thought it was unique. But I hated it because for some reason, it started off too different for me. You weren't really thrust right into action, you were just Joe Schmoe on your island and you had a sibling. I always felt Link was a destined soloist, who doesn't know his parents but always works hard to please others kinda guy. But Wind Waker got really good once your sister was captured. And then you started to scale the ocean, to different "uncharted" islands which actually enhanced the experience, because the ocean travelling was a different world in of itself! Now, if you had the GBA-GCN connector table, I'll tell you treasure hunting and getting all the secrets was easy, but man that map on the Gameboy Advanced was so... advanced! Then this game introduced the scrolls attacks, which I thought was a great add on than the usual 2 side sword swing with an upward thrust, or the spin. Wind Waker has a lot of bonus material, maybe because the game is so much exploring, that you are bound to find new things.
The puzzles dungeon and mini-game puzzles are great, meeting the fish just made you want to mark your whole map, and man this game had some ending. The story in the beginning was kind of muddled, but when you found out Tetra was Zelda and you needed to get the Triforce of Courage and resurrect the Master Sword to defeat Ganon, it all made sense. My favorite thing of the entire game (besides the ending) was the first time stepping into Hyrule...it was black and white it had no power. Until you brought it too life with and then color filled the land, making it vivid again.
Pulling out the Master Sword
Castle comes to life
5- Twilight Princess
The Twilight Princess for some reason is considered a Wii game...well it is not it is a gamecube game ported to the Wii. I have the Gamecube version because it actually runs best on the system it was made for. OK, Twilight Princess could be argued as a better Ocarina of Time, but I do not think so, although it probably is the closest thing to Ocarina of Time we will get. Twilight Princess kind a felt like two games in collecting the Light Spirits and then getting the Mirror Shards, which was pretty cool. The thing about TP I didn't enjoy were the towns, I felt they were souless, like I actually felt like I was in a video game compared to the towns of old games. Yes, the towns were bigger and had some secrets, but the NPC s were meh, forgettable, and the sidequests weren't as fun. Also, the secret "armor"/costume Link gets...kinda sucks I mean it drains your Ruppees and didn't look that cool and ugh I just didn't like it.
But I do have to say some of the hidden/bonus caves/puzzles were extremely fun/challenging and this game PERFECTED Link and Epona. You couldn't ask for better horse-back-ass-kicking; I also liked when you had to fight hoards of those gremlin creatures to advance to areas, made it seem like a wild world full of monsters. My favorite two dungeons had to be the ice level and the desert temple, they were down perfectly. It had excitement and horror and unique enemies, I really enjoyed playing them...and it took me forever to figure out how to hurt the desert boss lol. The scrolls were perfected in this game, as well, learning new abilities with your sword, which made the battles aganist the armors so much more fun. The only thing that took away from the sword moves was sometimes it was REQUIRED for you to kill the enemy, and that kinda takes away the point of a skill....
Wolf Link is cool but kinda redundant, but I understand he's a wolf not a badass swordsman.
Twilight Princess is a great game for people who want to get into Zelda and while people say buy it for the Wii, I am sticking my guns to the gamecube on this one. I mean I had it for both (cause it came with my Wii) but hey, listen. lol (not in this game)

4- Minish Cap
I didn't play Minish Cap until I hacked my PSP and downloaded a GBA emulator and got the Rom....one of my best decisions. The Legend of Zelda Minish Cap is the epitome of the series on the handheld. It takes elements from 4 swords, Link to the past, oracles, and link's awakening meshes them up to make a fantastic and memorable play. Probably the worst part about this game is you can't role diagonally, really that is it. You can learn sword skills in this game, you can use the Roc's Cape to jump!, you get the ocarina/quick travel early in the game because their is a lot of backtracking, the mix of tinyworld-Huge world is perfectly balanced, all the dungeons are perfectly done, and the music is superb and catchy. With that saying, their are many hidden secrets (meet all the tingles get the magic boomerang, all 4 bottles of course, etc.) and a bunch of sidequests, due to the idea of the Kinstones (which unlock more parts of the world for you to see).
Probably the biggest pain in the game is you literally have to talk a majority of the NPCs but that's what makes Zelda fun and feel alive! I recommend this game for all Zelda fans, no all video game fans.
Let's go!
3- Skyward Sword
Is it possible to be hooked after only playing a bit of the game? This technically should be a rank of INC since I have only played a tidbit of Skyward Sword (and to think I got the limited edition bundle on the first day) but so far I have seen even close to wrong in this game.
I just have to say wow to everything, the seemingly flawless motion control, the orchestrated music, the opening of the game. I am very much looking forward to this and yes to doubters of how i put this third, the beginning is better than the games I listed and it only gets better.
It's me enjoy this GPOY
2- Link to the Past
Link to the Past...this was tough putting it number 2. I mean who puts a complete game that is always fun no matter how many times you play it as their #2 game of Zeldas. Well Link to the Past is the game that hooked me on the series. I mean just the first half alone, was enough to satisfy the gamer in me but then BAM Dark World, Ganon has risen and more dungeons to explore. No one will ever forget the dark world theme, or the first time you became a bunny in the dark world, or pulling out the Master Sword this game is classic right down to the core.
In addition, this probably is my favorite Zelda to collect all the powerups. Like getting the level 4 Master Sword, the ocarina/flute, or all the medallions. Man this game just keeps you entertained...you never get bored. And that's what you want in a game; to always have fun. I can play this game anytime and anywhere and just play nonstop. The enemies, the grasscutting, the tunes, this game is what really started the Legend itself.
THE ITEMS
1- Ocarina of Time
This is it the best Legend of Zelda game of all of them. Ocarina of Time the model 3D game (well along with Super Mario 64). Ocarina of Time I play after every so many months. The game has be remade, technically twice, in OoT 3D [so new gamers could experience the Legend] and in the harder form of Master Quest [which we didn't get till we pre-ordered Wind Waker].
Before I go on...quick question is Master Quest in the OoT 3D a mirrored version of OoT3D. Because Master Quest (original/GCN) isn't mirrored it has the harder enemies, and the 20x more difficult dungeons...if anyone could answer that thank you.
Ocarina of Time...it truly is the perfect experience. Rated a perfect game by many, this timeless classic does more than enough to satisfy even noobs who probably can't out of the Lost Woods. Classic unforgettable tunes, such as Gerudo valley, only enhance the experience to further heights. The auto-lock was one of the most ingenious designs yet (and really helped with the hookshot), the mini-quests were fun and entertaining [like bringing all the masks to different people]. And the story was not only easy to follow, but a great one to learn. There a lot of things I will never forget like: Getting magic for the first time and getting the extended spin attack, or sneaking around killing guards in Gerudo Fortress, or fighting Queen Gohma and the screen going to its sudo-movie thing telling you the bosses name. Or even fighting Phantom Ganon.
The game also had its annoying parts like both water levels (although the water temple is not as hard people like to claim), the useless magic beans, and of course Navi. I love Ocarina of Time and think every gamer who has ever played a game should play this game. This game created 3D adventure/open-worlds, and where would we be today without Ocarina of Time?
OoT The best
Didn't make the top 10 cut: Majora's Mask, Legend of Zelda, Link's Adventure, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks
So what do you guys think?
Have you played Zelda?
Want to try it? What's your favorite?
and can you answer my question please?
