Iphone games that play great, and some with terrible controls!August 5, 2011 by

I've had an Iphone 3gs for just over a year now, and right away I started downloading games that interested me.  Some were great, and some were not, and it pretty much all comes down to controls, so here are the games that I've gotten over the last year, and my thoughts on each of them.

Need for Speed Shift.  I think this was my first download, and I was very impressed with the graphics.  The controls require turning the phone, and I think that's interesting, but sometimes very difficult.  I haven't played in a long while.

Angry Birds.  I remember saying to people, the best 99 cents I've ever spent, and it's probably true.  Great game, great controls, great replay!

DoodleJump.  I was a bit disappointed with this one.  It was simpler than I expected it to be, but my kids like it a lot.  I still play once in a while because it's quick and easy.

Zenonia.  I was excited that rpg's were possible on the system.  The graphics aren't great, and neither is the control.  I haven't played in so long, I don't really remember what to do or where to go.  Menus are so tiny.  I'm sure it's a great game, it would just be better on another system.

Unpleasant horse.  This was free, and is similar to Doodlejump in that it's just a short burst game. It's not that fun really, and will probably be removed soon.

Game of Life.  Thought this would be fun with family, and it is.  Have played a bunch on trips in the car or plane, with my daughters.

Scrabble.  Scrabble is scrabble! It's a great game, but it's usually a long game and usually doesn't get finished, even on those long trips.

Archetype.  This is an online shooter, and it actually has pretty good controls, which I'd prefer on other shooters.  It doesn't have a one player mode though, it's strictly online, and I guess if I would've paid attention initially, I probably wouldn't have downloaded it, because that's not really my thing.

Trucks and Skulls.  Often called Angry birds for guys.  Forget that, because there's nothing wrong with guys playing angry birds.  It's fun, but I hardly touch it and haven't finished it.

Angry birds seasons.  Another great version of a great game, and with updates occasionally, this one keeps on giving.

Reckless racing.  Ok, so I'm a racing fan.  This is a top down racer, and actually pretty good for controls and graphics.  Still, I don't play it much anymore.

Cut the Rope.  Another great game to play in bite sized pieces.  More frustrating than angry birds, but original and fun!

Boggle.  Boggle is more of a quick thinking game, and I do play it occasionally when I feel like using my brain more so than the other games listed here.

Sacred Odyssey.  This one cost more than the others, and is an rpg with very good graphics, and much better controls than Zenonia.  so why haven't I played it much?

Angry birds Rio. The graphics and some of the birds are new and different, with that same awesome gameplay!

Gravity Hook.  This was free for awhile, and is one of those quick play games that is funner than Doodlejump and Unpleasant horse, in my opinion.

Dead Space.  This has great graphics, but bad controls, which is really too bad.

Duke Nukem 3d.  The graphics aren't great, nor are the controls, but it is nostalgic.

Groove Coaster.  Recommended my IGN, as were most of these games, this one is awesome and has great music.  This is right up there with Angry birds, and I hope they make many more of these!

A-Breaker.  Downloaded this last night, as Damion Hatfield said in his twitter that it was free for a day.  And it's super fun!  It feels almost like an artsy cross between angry birds and cut the rope... or maybe more like Arachanoid.

So there you have it, some great games that I highly reccomend, and some not quite.  merob

I've got some games I'm ready to trade in...but for what?August 1, 2011 by

Yeah, some of you are against trading games in, but even with working two jobs, I don't often feel I have money to spare on games.  Usually I can get two or even three used games when I trade stuff in, but my library is getting too large with unfinished games because of this,  so I'm hoping for a rare new game for myself.    These are the ones I'm trading: Halo Reach I'm tired of waiting for my friends to be available online, and I don't play online alone-Dead or Alive Dimensions, this was a filler game for me to pass time between 3DS hits...and Orange Box which I finished just recently.

So what do I really want?  Super Mario 3DS, Super Mario Kart 3DS, and Zelda Skyward Sword are all my top picks, but so far away.  So then there is X-box 360 with Rage or Dead Island being the top of my list... I haven't played Gears 2, so I'm not gonna play part 3 yet.   Forza 4 is a huge one for me, but I wanna finish more of part 3, which I've been doing a lot of lately... Star Fox 64 3DS is coming sooner than these, but I finished the original as a rental, and don't really feel the need to buy this, especially with no online.. also thinking maybe Cave Story 3d?  so which of the games listed should I trade toward?  Or are there some major games before November that I'm missing, since August and September seem pretty bare.  Thanks!

Dc Comics Reboot!!??July 2, 2011 by

I've been collecting comics for about 30 years, and it's kind of an exciting time for comic book fans like myself.  Who doesn't love reboots?  Well, ok, they can go either way, and usually not too well.  But the whole line of DC being redone, that's a bit over the top.  I've slowed my comics purchasing in recent years, and much prefer trades.  The problem with DC as opposed to their rival (Marvel), is that they take forever, and always go to hardcover first!  Once upon a time, back in my teens and early 20's, I would have bought every #1 issue during these reboots, but 52?  That's a lot of moolah!  I've scanned through previews, and I will be picking up some #1's, and may even get a series on a regular basis, but so many of these are doomed to failure.  Do we really need so many Batman books?  Yes, those will probably sell.  How about Green Lantern?  Hawk and Dove, Hawkman, Aquaman, a lot of these many times over tried series simply will not make it yet again.  I'm happy for those fans, and it would be cool if they did, but it's so doubtful.  I'm probably most excited about DC Universe presents, and may get this as an ongoing.  Otherwise I'll pick up Action, Detective, Superman, Batman, Stormwatch and Green Lantern #1's.  Green Lantern only because it sounds like it's going to be someone entirely new.  Stormwatch because it integrates Image characters into DC proper, and has Martian Manhunter, who I love.  The rest, I guess we'll have to see.  If things go well, I could pick up trades, but most will be almost a year away.  I really miss Wizard magazine, because that's where a lot of my old hype came from.  What about the rest of you?  There are a lot of interesting sounding books, but I'm limiting my spending.  What are the stand out picks for you?  I may do a review blog once I pick up these issues.  It's kind of exciting, but kind of scary, so let's see where they go with DC's future, shall we?  merob

My big gaming weekend! and stuff in my life lately...June 24, 2011 by

For 8 months now, we'v e had this family plan around a wedding.  I was not going, but my wife and kids were, which meant driving across most of Canada with her parents!  My plan was to stay home and work, but also play, which I don't get to do a lot, and with aprox 10 days to do so.  Well that got squashed when last minute her parents weren't going.  So my wife went with her aunt, and the kids got left with me.  10 days down to 6, and not alone.  Plus I had invited a friend from where I grew up for the weekend... surprise surprise, he cancelled on me last night.  I had the kids all planned for sleepovers at friends.. now my 10 days is down to 2 alone.  But I'm going to make the most of it!  I had planned to rent some games, primarily Duke Nukem for a laugh, and probably some other shooter like Crisis 2 or Gears 2 or anything I haven't played.  I may still do that, but I also want to finish some games.  So I'm working on Wolverine, borrowed from a friend.  Dragon Quest 9 which I'm right at the end, but apparantly I chose classes of character that aren't helping me much with the final battle.  Ridge Racer DS, and Orange Box, which I only have Episode 1 and 2 to finish.  Of course, I have about 20 other games I may decided to play.

Another thing I love to do when I have the alone time, is watch movies, specifically horror or ones that my family is not interested in.  I was also hoping to see Green Lantern this weekend... So tonight I may rent Paranormal Activity 1 and 2 and watch them in the dark... and maybe see Green Lantern on Sunday?  Also, since my buddy isn't coming, I may take the kids to see Cars 2 tomorrow.  The last two nights I watched the first two episodes of Game of Thrones, which is awesome!  I tried to pick Zelda 3ds but it's sold out, so I may download Links Awakening.  Too much to do crammed into a small space.  I'd love to get to the comic store... I'm definitely going to have more Rum and Coke Slurpees...So much to do, so little time, but more time than normal, that's why I was able to finally do a little blog!  Laterz

Give the Nintendo 3DS a chance! It's going to succeed with or without you!June 3, 2011 by

Everybody loves to talk about how the 3DS isn't making the sales they thought it would.  Also, everybody is saying it's not all it was cracked up to be, especially since it looked so promising.  With Zelda OOT right around the corner, it has the potential to finally pick up sales, maybe even sell out.  Not to mention the secrets of the online shop which will finally be revealed next week.  I've had my system since launch and I still love it, and play it every day that I can.  Yeah, there haven't been much for hits yet, but I've already got three games that have plenty of gameplay in them.  1.  Ridge Racer 3d.  Yeah, it's starts off with the same looking stages and cars as it always does.  But I've played it for 8 hours, and I'm only 40% through the multiple stages.  2. Pilotwings.  This is a great game, with some fun challenges and exploration.  Yeah, a lot of us have already seen Wuhu Island on the Wii, but have we explored every inch of it?  I haven't yet!  3. Dead or Alive Dimensions.  There is a story mode here that lasts quite awhile, plus, the Spotpass brings something new every day!  A new costume or challenge or whatever, that is surely enough to keep playing this game for awhile, and a very cool feature by the way.

I still haven't played all of the AR games, I've been saving some.  Also the Find Mii game is pretty tough when there are no others around to do Streetpass with.  And yet everytime I find someone, I'm thrilled.  I just wish it were more often.  I for one am very excited to see the store online, and the free Excitebike is an awesome bonus.  I'm sure there will be a multitude of titles announced at E3, so at the very least, check it out.  By the end of the year, everyone is going to want one of these fabulous little systems!
