• 40 million accounts registered.
• Year-on-year sales increased by over 100%
• Simultaneous users topped 5 million during December.
• Served over 780 petabytes of data; twice that of 2010.
• Over 14.5m Steamworks games were registered, 67% up from 2010.
• Steamworks is now in over 400 games.
• Over 19m in-game items were traded.
• Chat Faliszek consumed over 900 live dogs during the development of Portal 2.

As old school bloggers would know I am a huge Valve fan. They make their mistakes but what they do is incredible. Valve is run by about 260 people who have no job titles. They just pick whatever they want to do each day based on a todo list... By comparison:

EA has 8,000 worldwide as of March 31, 2010

Ubisoft has 6,700 collaborators worldwide

Activision Blizzard is said to have about 5000 employees

Despite this each of these companies choose to use Steam. EA is tiring for a second time to create their own service and for that I applaud them. It must be embarrassing to be shown up by an indie studio from Bellevue, Washington.

The bright side to Valve's "nobody there telling them what to do" style is that they are free to do whatever they want and make innovative products and services. The downside is that they are very unprofessional at times. Missing due dates, slow updates, and slow customer support. Heck, back in 2008 they only had about 13 people working on Steam... I wonder how many work on it now... It may not be a dedicated team but a group that just normally decides to work on Steam related issues from what I understand...
