In the late 18th century, the reach of the infant United States went about as far westward as the Mississippi River, with the vast expanse sitting beyond it an unknown quantity. After foreign empires essentially abandoned their claims to North America, one after another, during the course of the 19th century, the United States ventured ever westward, until it touched the Pacific Ocean in the west, the Rio Grande in the south, and the 49th parallel in the north. During the course of such expansion, one notion of the westward traveler replaced another, from the hardened explorers like Lewis and Clark to the 49ers that ventured to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in search of gold.
But then, there was the southwest. The land of deserts, cacti, cowboys and lawlessness. And just like the lives of explorers and miners in those years past, the lives of those brave souls that pressed into the southwest in the last half of the 19th century and into the early 20th century were fraught with danger. And it's that environment that Red Dead Redemption places you into, as the mysterious character named John Marston. The year? 1910. The location? The Western Border States.
Red Dead Redemption is, in many ways, a Grand Theft Auto game. And that means missions, side quests and collectibles galore. Our expansive guide covers everything for you, from the game's main storyline to the most obscure, out of the way collectibles and encounters. Our goal? To net you a 100% completion rating.
A: There's no doubt about it; at the very least, the in-game tutorials teaching you how to duel aren't very specific or helpful. Chances are, you're going to need some outside help to fully understand how to duel. Thankfully, we have a section of this very guide to help you with just that. Click here to be brought to our Dueling Tutorial, with both text and an instructive video to help you out. It should answer any and all of your dueling-related questions.
Q: How do I shoot a gun out of an enemy's hand?
A: This is easier than you might have expected. To shoot a gun out of an enemy's hand, simply shoot your enemy's gun-equipped arm or hand. This will make your foe defenseless, at least temporarily, allowing you to capture him alive for a bounty, or escape unscathed from the scene of a fight. This also comes in handy in duels, especially if you're looking to score positive Honor.
Q: Where can I find [a specific variety of] Horse?
A: There are over twenty distinct varieties of horses in the game, and all of them can be broken, ridden, and used at any time, so long as you have them unlocked and available to you. Deeds can be purchased at many general stores and activated via a menu so that your active horse can switch when you whistle for one. Some of the better horses in the game must be found in the wild, broken, and then purchased via deed to access, however. More information on Horses, their types, and where they're found can be found by clicking here.
Q: How do I access Mexico?
A: When you look at your map, you'll see a giant river in the middle. This river is the San Luis River, and it separates the United States (to the north) from Mexico (to the south). You won't be able to cross it until a certain point in the game. Specifically, you're going to need to undertake the mission with Irish called "We Shall Be Together In Paradise." Once that mission is completed, you'll find yourself in Mexico, and you should be able to head back and forth between the two countries at will thereafter.
Q: How do I access Tall Trees / The Great Plains?
A: You'll no doubt notice a conspicuous location at the northeastern segment of your map. This section of the United States is isolated from the rest of the map by the Aurora Basin and its runoff stream, and can't be accessed until you're about two-thirds through the game's main events. After you complete the mission called "An Appointed Time" for the rebel leader Abraham Reyes, you should be beckoned to the Great Plains/Tall Trees location to continue with the game. At that point, you should be able to head there with no issues.
