Skyrim's Best Companions

Skyrim may be the most action-packed province of Tamriel, what with dragons raining death from the skies, but that doesn't mean even the mightiest of Nords are resilient to loneliness. Not every potential partner is worth your time, so look through Skyrim's best companions and pick a loyal friend.

If you've read our The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim review, you already know that it is easy to lose yourself in the excitement of fighting dragons or the tranquility of Tamriel's beauty while adventuring throughout the land of Skyrim. After a while, however, it is the loneliness that always sets in. Sure, I just slayed that dragon single-handedly, but I want more hands. I want to do it double-handedly, at least. What if I see two bears making love in the forest? Am I supposed to laugh about it with myself? It could potentially be one of Skyrim's best videos, afterall. No, I need a companion, and so do you. Seeing as how there's no Skyrim mod for friendship, here are Skyrim's best companions to bring along and keep you company on your adventures.

Lydia

Where To Find: Whiterun, after completing the quest "Dragon Rising"
Specialization: Two-handed Weapons

Lydia is usually the first Skyrim wench with which most adventurers come across and form a bond. We've been through a lot together. I've come across many other adventurers willing to follow me into battle, but I've chosen to stick with Lydia for reasons beyond my knowledge.

After you slay your very first Dragon and reveal that you are the Dragonborn, Jarl Balgruuf grants you the title Thane of Whiterun and gives you your very own housecarl. At first, you're not quite sure what this means, but then you discover that a housecarl is your brand new, loyal companion. She'll fight with you, hold your crap and let you know when she "has a bad feeling" about something, sort of like a "you're about to die" radar.

She'll also run across every booby trap you've meticulously avoided, set them off and cause a ruckus. Housecarl fail.

Jenassa - Skyrim Companions

Jenassa

Where To Find: The Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun, Must Pay 500 Gold
Specialization: Archery

Don't be too hard on Lydia for screwing everything up, as every comapnion will do this. Upon further inspection of the city of Whiterun, you will find a lone mercenary for hire in The Drunken Huntsman. Jenassa is hanging out by her lonesome on the right when you first walk in, drowning her sorrow in mead.

After a short conversation, you can choose to pay Jenassa 500 big ones for her company. No, she won't give you a "Dragon's Reach" but she will fight alongside you.

Erik - Skyrim Companions

Erik

Where To Find: Rorikstead, Must Convince Mralki to Let Erik Become an Adventurer and Pay 500 Gold
Specialization: Two-Handed Weapons

Erik is a farmhand that can found working in Rorikstead. He yearns for the freedom of being an adventurer, but can't convince his father to let him pursue it. How someone who still listens to daddy has the courage to venture into dungeons is beyond me, but complete his little side quest and Erik will transform into Erik the Slayer, the faster, stronger and better version of Erik.

What does Erik the Slayer do with all his new freedom? He hangs out in Rorikstead's inn. Hire him for 500 gold to get a powerful, two-handed weapon wielding ally.

Aela - Skyrim Companions

Aela

Where To Find:  Whiterun, Must Complete the Quest "Glory of the Dead"
Specialization: Archery

You will first encounter Aela outside Whiterun's city walls fighting alongside her shield-brothers against a renegade Giant. Even though I helped out in the battle, she proceeded to thank me for nothing and rudely brush me off. Little did she know I would soon be her shield-brother and she would be serving me, the Dragonborn.

She's lucky she's good in a fight, because I was about to tell her to wait in a dark, damp crypt and never come back. She also has some awesome side-boob action going on. Don't pretend you haven't been looking.

Not to mention, SPOILER ALERT, she's a wicked sweet werewolf, and not the lame, shirtless Taylor Lautner kind. Although, shirtless would work in this case.

Cicero - Skyrim Companions
Cicero - Skyrim Companions Credit: Destructoid
7

Cicero

Where To Find: Near Loreius Farm, Must Complete the Dark Brotherhood Quest Line and Spare His Life
Specialization: Sneak

You'll first run into Cicero near Loreius Farm, north of Whiterun, with a broken wagon and a few problems of his own. You can choose to help him fix his wagon or report him to the authorities for being suspicious. Why a guy with a broken down wagon is suspicious doesn't really make sense to me, but he is wearing a jester outfit. Maybe that's against the law? Skyrim's war on laughter is getting out of hand if this is true.

Later on, SPOILER ALERT, you'll meet Cicero when running through the Dark Brotherhood quest line, where players will be given the option to kill Cicero or let him live. If you let the Keeper of the Dark Brotherhood live, you will be given the option to take him on as your companion. He has skills similar to those of the Dark Brotherhood initiates and can sneak around with the best of them. Plus, that jester outfit is just boss.

Derkeethus

I'd say he's two. Why? He's a%^*&ing invincible lizard man that goes with his pickaxe, bow, dual wield, and act bad-ass! And he's %^*&ing Derkeethus.

Marcurio

Lydia was my first partner, but she died on me in a guard gang attack. I had another partner after her, but the same thing happened with him in another city. I forgot his name but he was skilled in 2 handed weapons. After him was Belrand....a battle-mage. He sucked ass because he'd always run ahead of me in fights and I'd end up accidentally hitting him. One time, he even tried to fight me. I reloaded the last savepoint with him about 3 times since he was carrying a bunch of my stuff, but thankfully he disappeared on me when I told him to wait while I finished a quest. I forgot to go back and get him and he was gone...heehee. Marcurio was my most recent partner, and he has been the best ever. He hasn't died on me yet and kills everything on site....but he's M.I.A now since I did the dragonslayer quest. Companions apparently leave you once you start that quest. I don't see him anymore....not even where I first found him. I didn't know that Winterhold khajiit was a companion. When I first saw him, they didn't give me the option to use him. I'm a female khajiit, so having him as a partner would be kinda cool.

Dylan Dorostkar - Mon. Jan. 9, 2012 at 09:38:23 PM

He's back

If your follower is M.I.A., go back to where you found him/her, they'll be there.

Josef Bugajski - Sat. Jan. 7, 2012 at 04:59:20 PM

Erandur: Permanent Beast Mode

Let's see, he's great at sneak, archery, one-handed and two handed blunt weapons, GREAT with destruction magic and restoration. He is a Dark Elf, so he's got that going for him. He also will get a sense right before we encounter a trap or enemies, especially if we're sneaking around. He'll warn you just in time to get the drop on almost anyone. He has little comments about every place we go, very specific at times. In my opinion, he's by far the best follower. The only thing I've ever seen take him out was a Blood Dragon, and he gave him hell before he died. Erandur all the way, accept no substitutes.

Josef Bugajski - Sat. Jan. 7, 2012 at 05:03:11 PM

Erandur Is God

Give him some heavy armor, a flame bow, a warhammer, and a lightning staff and you'll see what I'm talking about. He'll use everything, and he'll whip out fireballs in between. The man is a menace.

Marriage

How exactly do you marry. Imma try to marry J'zargo just because I want to run around as a khoijit couple :)

Pat Clark - Fri. Jan. 6, 2012 at 11:06:55 PM

companions

don't forget mjoll the lioness. you can find her in riften. you recover her sword from a dwerven ruin and agrees to tag along with you. i even introduced her to dephine of the blades(which she accepted) but i still use her. virtually indestructable(sp) and probably the most beautiful companion in the game.

Robert Whitefield - Fri. Jan. 6, 2012 at 05:02:52 PM

Ogol

This heavily armored, war axe-wielding, Orsimer badass has been with me for over 40 levels now. Granted, he ends up waiting by himself a lot while I go do my stealth thing, but he's the perfect meatshield complement to my quick-moving roguish Bosmer.

Ames Hollingsworth - Fri. Jan. 6, 2012 at 01:44:02 PM

Don't forget Meeko!

I didn't see any mention of Meeko in this at all, and I would say he is a companion as well. He's a dog you pick up at Meeko's Shack, and he will follow you around until you kill or dismiss him. He runs up to and attacks anything that either you are attacking or is attacking you. I doubt he is one of the top companions, but hey, who doesn't want man's best friend along for the ride? :P

Don Speer - Tue. Jan. 3, 2012 at 11:22:19 PM

Brelyna Maryon

Don't let her clumsiness fool you. She's very powerful. You and her can obliterate anything you come across with ease.

Lizabeth Doicin - Thu. Dec. 29, 2011 at 04:30:07 PM

Marcurio

I use Marcurio most often now (and I married him, so we are an awesome battle-couple), and we were going through a dungeon once, I hear him kill the last of the bandits behind me, and I turn around and he's using the elven sword I had him carry in one hand and lightning in the other (pretty sure he killed the bandit with the sword). Also, when travelling between places without fast-travelling (if I'm not on my horse) I keep my weapons out so I'm prepared, and I turned around once to see Marcurio weilding the dwarven greatsword I had made him carry. He always puts it away and gets out his Destruction magic when in a battle, but it just makes me laugh that he's content to run around with this huge sword and not even use it.

Tgg Graal - Thu. Dec. 29, 2011 at 08:11:52 AM

Lydia

Lydia was my partner, then I told her to wait in winterhold while I went back to whiterun to buy a house... Now she's stuck in whiterun in the jarls quarters and refuses to follow me...

Lydia

She's the first so there is a strong loyalty factor. Plus I like the sarcastic "I am sworn to carry your burdens" response.

Companion stuck in Shrine of Talos

I married Aela, and she was my companion during the Foresworn Conspiracy quest. The first time the guards try to arrest you in Shrine of Talos, I killed the guards. I don' t know if that pissed her off or not, but she never leaves the shrine now. I tell her to open the door and she "can't do that now." I tell her we're parting ways, and she says she'll meet me at home, but she still never leaves the shrine. Strange glitch, or women be trippin?

Marcus Parsons - Mon. Dec. 12, 2011 at 12:34:42 PM

You know what they say...

Women always be trippin' bro.

POOTIS

dude, just cheat her out of there!

Beau Needham - Sun. Dec. 11, 2011 at 06:26:57 AM

Vigilance and Jordis the sword maiden

I like vigilance better than Barbas (you can have both if you never deliver barbas to the quest destination) because barbas always pushes me around and moves me when im aiming my bow, I also like jordis the sword maiden (become the thane of solitude) because you can marry her and then she becomes a shop that you can sell thing to and make her hold your stuff and she is also as equal as mjoll the lioness in combat.

Nathan Bennett - Sun. Dec. 11, 2011 at 05:05:45 AM

B**** PLEASE!

no companion compares Odaviing or as my character likes to say . . . oh-da . . . . . VIIIING!!!!!!!

Mjoll

everyone else i kill cus they get in my way

Chucky Hill - Sat. Dec. 10, 2011 at 01:48:13 AM

Aela

how do you marry Aela cause i've been using her for a while now and i haven't had the option to marry her at all but i want to cause shes the reason im a werewolf and so is she and also im the leader of the companions

Nick Vldtkt - Sat. Dec. 10, 2011 at 04:32:15 PM

My wife's a dead thrall

Like all potential fiances, you first need to complete their quest/line. After that, equip an Amulet of Mara. You can buy one from the priest Maramal, found in either the Riften inn (bee&barb) or the Riften temple. If you've completed the questline, you're wearing the amulet, and a unique marrital speech dialogue does not open up upon entering chat, sorry mate you're bugged. Choose your spouse carefully, "unto death do us part" does not apply in Skyrim. Goodluck ^

Bernardino Dino Macapagal - Mon. Dec. 12, 2011 at 12:55:56 PM

Aela...

you need to wear the Amulet Of Mara then talk to her.

Thomas Denniston - Fri. Dec. 16, 2011 at 08:39:35 PM

To marry Aela.

You need an amulet of Mara, those you can get at the temple in Riften. Wear that, and npc's who show interest in you will mention the amulet your wearing.

Charles Pilcher - Sat. Dec. 17, 2011 at 10:47:17 AM

hmm

i did not get the option to get aela till i could marry her. its after the werewolf line of quests.at the end, when you made the top companion you can now marry her.

Nick Daneliak - Fri. Jan. 6, 2012 at 04:25:03 PM

Fewr

you need to talk to Maramal too, even if you already have an Amulet of Mara. You need to ask him, for the first time, about marriage in Skyrim. THEN you can marry characters.

Sexism is Ugly

The casual sexism in this article is really disappointing. It's not cute. It's not cool. It's not witty. It's just rude, crude, and obnoxious. Stuff like this is the reason why so many people who aren't teenaged males feel unwelcome in the gaming community. It's the reason why gamers have such a bad, ostracized reputation. I expected better. Richard

Mark Dillon - Sun. Dec. 11, 2011 at 10:55:14 PM

.....

1 its a game, 2 get over it this is the internet, 3 there are no women comments about how this is sexist and there is a lot worse sexism than this and 5 get over it

Ahem

cool story, bro

Lizabeth Doicin - Thu. Dec. 29, 2011 at 04:18:16 PM

Wow.

"Stuff like this is the reason why so many people who aren't teenaged males feel unwelcome in the gaming community." I'm a young woman almost in my 20s, and I feel perfectly welcome in the gaming community, and I didn't see a HINT of sexism in this article.

Shealyn Litton - Sun. Jan. 1, 2012 at 09:20:19 AM

Guys, c'mon

To be fair, I can see where he got the inclinations of sexism from this article. Firstly, the author refers to Lydia as a "wench." A term that has multiple meanings: a servant girl or farmhand; a young woman, usually a peasant; or a prostitute. Now, Lydia *is* technically your servant (though not in the same sense as servile servant or slave, such as a wench), however, the game already provides you with the title of housecarl (akin to bodyguard) which is a much better title. I don't know why he decided to go with wench. No need to peg poor Lydia as a lowly servant girl or slave. Especially since "wench" also bears the definition of prostitute. Speaking of prostitutes: "No, she won't give you a "Dragon's Reach" but she will fight alongside you." What a darn shame, right? I actually thought this joke was rather clever until he mentioned "side boob action" when writing about Aela and noting how Camilla is "some tease leading everyone on; she's not important." It's a little too much for one, rather short, article to make a sexual or demeaning comment about almost every female character in the article and it gets a bit tired. Well, that's my two cents. I just thought I'd defend this poor guy since everyone in the world seems to think that sexism doesn't exist anymore and people should shut up about it. More power to ya Richard.

Michael J. Conway - Sat. Jan. 7, 2012 at 06:51:41 AM

Take a laxative, V, and get over yourself!

Firstly, the term "wench" is perfectly in keeping with the lore aspect of any fantasy role-playing game. Secondly, to pass judgement on anyone playing these games is certainly your right; however, it begs the question WTF are you doing on this chat site in the first place? Don't you have wrongs to right in real life? I suggest you take a strong laxative, and pass your uptight judgement down the drain.

Alex Garlow - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 11:57:19 AM

Personal List

10 - Lydia, Housecarl of Whiterun (Whiterun Hold) 9 - Farkas (The Companions) 8 - Marcurio, in Riften (The Rift) 7 - Erandur (Daedric Quest: Waking Nightmare) 6 - Aela the Huntress (The Companions) 5 - Annekke Crag-Jumper, the adventuress of Darkwater Crossing (Eastmarch) 4 - Mjoll the Lioness, adventuress in Riften (The Rift) 3 - J'Zargo (The College of Winterhold) 2 - Aranea (Daedric Quest: The Black Star) 1 - Kharjo, the bodyguard for Ahkari's Caravan (Khajiit Caravans)

Alex Garlow - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 09:55:24 AM

Khajiit for the win!

This list was well done. Lydia, Aela, and J'Zargo are all awesome picks. However, I am disappointed. The person who wrote this obviously never spent any time with Kharjo (the bodyguard for Ahkari's Caravan. Which travels between Dawnstar and Riften.) This Khajiit is a beast. Hook him up with the best heavy armor, mace, and shield you can find. Give him some arrows you can afford to live without and watch his archery mastery work its wonders. I have been running with Kharjo for days now, and have yet to see him even take a knee. He accompanied me against an Elder Dragon and Krosis (Dragon Priest) battle too, and never flinched. Also, I have been exploring the marriage side of Skyrim. Me playing a Khajiit, apparently I will be a single-man(cat) the whole experience. Every race can have a potential spouse of the same race, except the Khajiit. Male or female, it does not matter. So, I ended up with Aela just for humor sake. Great list, but epic fail on NOT including Kharjo!

Kevin Leu - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 09:37:03 AM

mjoll

I hate her with a passion, but i love her. she complains, but then again what girl doesn't, but then again she kicks butt!

Vicente Pelechano Servando - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 09:24:59 AM

Barbas

Barbas is also awesome but after he and Shadowmere raped the face of a dragon before even I could get close I dismissed the bastards. Buying a Bethesda's Game and have my spotlight stolen is a big nono...

Vicente Pelechano Servando - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 09:16:13 AM

Jenassa

I personally sticked with Jenassa after soloing the game and found out how amazing she was for just one single thing...whe you tell her to sneak the **** out, she actually DOES it... Screw housejarls and many others, dunmer sneaky biatch is the way to go, of course if you play sneaky types, Aela is fine as well unfortunately I tend to cover my companions with armor from top to bottom so I don't get much side boob action...ohh well...

Brad Devoe - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 09:14:08 AM

The 3 badasseteers!

Sven, Erik the Slayer, and Erandur are my go-to guys. They are friggen cool. Sven is just the man, he is sick with Dragon bone armor and Battle axe. Erik is unstoppable in his Daedric armor and war axe and sheild. And Erandur is a master of spells and holy warrior with his Glass armor that negates all costs of destruction spells.

Brad Devoe - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 09:13:39 AM

I OBJECT!!!!!

Personally I have no use for Sven, I showed the girl what Sven is really like. After all Faendal the total dick that wanted the woman to dislike the other dude falsely. Faendal has been by my side since my first day in Skyrim, he has helped me defeat the undead and many other terrible things. His archery skills come in handy when he has fallen behind and I am faced with three enemies, often he has killed the one at my back before I even realize they are there. He even journeyed up the thousand stairs with me. I have crafted him some of the best armour I can.

Ace Tunes - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 08:34:49 AM

Way to allow me to edit.

After all Faendal isn't the total dick that wanted the woman to dislike the other dude falsely.

Um...Actually

Both Faendal and Sven give you a note saying it's from the other one, I personally sided with Faendal and used him to complete the deadra mission Beoth...

Michael Crane - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 10:05:41 AM

I agree

I have him in heavy armor and some nice arrows he murders stuff and can teach you archery lol. And he rarely complains he is pretty good about when ask him to be a pack mule lol My favorite companion as well

Javier Andres Hoyos - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 07:23:20 AM

Onmud

Well, since im into the battlemage stuff, y choosed Onmud from the college of winterhold, its a really good follower; so im a little down cause he died and i didnt realized until it was too late, i saved and auto saved beyond the point i couldnt go back :( I did a lot of things with that guy, im sure gonna miss him a lot.

Janet Northway - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 01:34:29 AM

Erandur Rocks

Sadly Lydia died too often for me to keep her - she did leave me 300 gold in her will though! Erandur on the other hand is awesome, very hard, very good at the old destruction magic and will stay out of trouble when badly hurt giving you enough time to heal him. Also coz he's a priest of Mara he regenerates his own health really quickly. He's definitely my favourite

Brent Chevalier - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 06:38:42 AM

Lydia

I always just re-loaded it when she died, I still have her at 120 hours into the game. It's nice to have someone carry an extra 200 pounds of item when you can't lol!

Aaron Lyon - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 12:53:40 AM

Atronachs

who needs another companion when you have two storm thralls?

Matt Jeevas - Mon. Jan. 2, 2012 at 06:27:36 PM

Weight

They'll carry like 200 pounds without amulets or enchantments.

Cavlin Evans - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 12:07:39 AM

Did you miss the winterhold lady?

Can't remember her name. Dark elf who shoots bows and summons ****?

Richard Tong - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 11:28:58 PM

Golldir

I use both Lydia and Golldir, they are both equally good and pretty solid, Golldir is awesome with 1 H, 2H & bows......so I change back and forth btween the 2 of them...looking out for a mage follower now. This list gives me a good hint on who to get. Thanks :)

Evan Lane - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 10:41:34 PM

Anyone Else Annoyed...

...That the author repeatedly called it 'Destructive' instead of 'Destruction' skill?

Marcus Parsons - Sun. Dec. 11, 2011 at 06:10:30 AM

Nope, not really...

...because Destructive and Destruction have basically the same meaning. Everyone knows what the author's talking about, so there's no need to be petty about it. :)

Romeo Ruby Mustonen - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 10:19:21 PM

Mjoll the Lioness

she's the best companion in the game. her max level is 40 and she's indestructible. just equip her with the best armour and weapon and you have a Godess of war

Mike Parsons - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 09:44:10 PM

Anyone

Apparently, there is a mod for the PC version of Skyrim that allows you become companions with any NPC.......sounds like fun!!! I want to get Jarl Baalgruff killed by a dragon, that bastard!!! haha

Stacy Obakpolor - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 09:22:47 PM

Mjoll!!!

I cant believe you left Mjoll out of this list.. shes literally indestructable. I'd sick her on a blood dragon, and shed spank it by herself!! shes a a tank! you should try her out.

Cicero

Cicero! Funny and sadistic, whats not to love?

Dead

Jazargo got killed by a dragon its a pitty

Stephen Louis Bock - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 07:27:16 PM

Lydia

I'm at max level and Lydia still holds her own. Course I smithed her up some very over powered Daedric Armor and enchanted the hell out it. The real question people should be asking is not who is the best companion but rather: Why is Dragonbone Armor weaker than Daedric?

Ryan Jacob Churchill DeRose - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 08:56:36 PM

Rarity of materials

the materials required to make dragonbone armor are literally falling from the sky, whereas it's harder to find daedra souls.

Dilan Hernandez - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 10:52:18 PM

Daedra Hearts.

Daedra Hearts you mean.

Brent Chevalier - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 06:42:05 AM

Daedra Hearts

I just had 2 of them yesterday and sold them : ( i had no idea thats what they were for and i've sold all my dragon bones. Pooo...

Jacob John Lamoreaux - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 08:40:32 AM

Easy way for Deadric Hearts

If you go to the Museum in Dawnstar, and do the quest to get The Razor. You'll get 4 hearts default. If you fast travel to the Shrine a week later the NPCs will respawn. In other words. You have an unlimited supply of Deadric Hearts. (:

Zhuozheng Zou - Sun. Dec. 18, 2011 at 06:08:33 AM

Thanks for the tip!!

Funniest glitch I ever encountered was a dead witch suddenly fallen from the sky with a deadric heart I happened to need in her inventory. It was the only daedric heart I got...now I know where to find more:)

Andrew Leitch - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 12:58:06 AM

Andre

Why should that make any difference except for arbitrary game balance notions? If dragonbone is harder to smith, one would think its a tougher material, ergo it should make stronger armour. If not, then Daedric Armour should be the one that requires 100% skill to make.

Dave de Vink - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 01:55:07 AM

Not that hard to aquire.

I agree on the fact that it's odd that daedric armor is bettr then dragonbone, due to skill requirements and all. But daedra hearts aren't that hard to aquire. They sell them in alchemic shops for about 450 each ( depending on speech skill ofcourse ). Perhaps it has to do with the fact dragon armor comes in a light armor variation. Dragonbone / dragonscale. Daedric has not. Prolly the reason they added it in so that light armor useres have a max AR set aswell.

Dark Brotherhood initiate + ghost of Lucien Lachance

Nothing better than a trio of misfit dark brotherhood roaming around Skyrim, tearing **** up

Jennifer Weishaar - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 06:36:46 PM

Aela the Hunter

Aela the Hunter is not only my wife but my compainon. For an added bonus she is a freaking werewolf! And she has a store, and she can give you quests to kill stuff, AND she cooks! What more could you ask for?! Also you can do same sex marriages in Skyrim.

Amie Robinson-Yeatts - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 06:25:55 PM

IONA!!!!

She's been through it all, and knows when to go wait at home! The Sanguine Rose is a great second, for short company!

Ethan Ritschard - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 05:33:19 PM

Derkeethus

Invincible, can be married for more money, AND good at archery and sneak for generating infinite arrows of any kind. (Equip him with a few of any arrow type, and he'll never run out of that kind. Pick up his fired arrows for infinite arrows).

Ethan Ritschard - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 05:30:46 PM

Derkeethus

Invincible, can be married for more money, AND good at archery so he can generate infinite arrows of any kind if you equip him with them.

Andy Oglesby - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 05:17:35 PM

Stenvar

Am I the only one that likes him? :c He's pretty swell I think.

Ronald Snyder - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 05:14:13 PM

Valor Shout

This shout brings up different dead Dragonborne's to fight with you.

Ricky Watson - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 04:40:06 PM

Vilkas

Has proven himself many times. Give him a beasty two handed weapon and he will do work..or trade weapons and he will even use staff magic combined with swords. He's nasty.

Joey Yang - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 02:19:00 AM

FARKAS!!!

Farkas, his brother, is better, and he is immortal. He uses whatever i give him, he can dual wield fireball staves, sword and staff, he uses summoning staves, he is a BEAST. He should be #1 imo :P

Jack Stuttard - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 04:37:48 PM

MJOLL

As far as I know, Mjoll is invincible. Even if she is downed and surrounded by enemies, i can launch as many fireballs as I want at her and she always gets back up. I even tried killing her myself to see if she could die, almost dying myself in the process, but all I could do was down her, she always comes back up.

Matt Ekola - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 05:57:21 PM

Mjoll

I think you are right Jack. I have been using Mjoll for around 20 lvls and she just won't die unlike my suicidal horses. I loaded her with heavy Dragon plate and a better sword. She is a beast.

Andrew Pacely - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 04:24:14 PM

Prefer

I have used Lydia 99% of the time, and Mjoll (married) the other one percent. Lydia has only died on me Twice. Mjoll Never. Granted I could Smith Dragon armor since level 15, I never gave Lydia any until 30s. It's all personal preference. I personally have had Quest followers set me aflame... And archer followers simply don't cut it when ypure in a crypt and you're swarmed by 12 Scourge, 7 dethlords, 4 Deth Overlords, 2 Draurg Bosses and a Lich boss. Lydia has always helped when I've been overwhelmed. What I am more concerend with is polygamy. please Bethesda, let us marry more than one. You know that would be awesome. Make it a DLC, and add with it the option to Marry Lydia. I'll pay 400 for that.

Tom Abrams - Sun. Dec. 11, 2011 at 06:48:46 PM

You can marry Lydia...

I've seen videos of people doing it on YouTube.

Lauren Gizzi - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 04:21:33 PM

Ummm...

Where the hell is Shadowmere?? Best companion in the entire damn game.

Nicholas Parrott - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 09:20:29 PM

Shadowmere

Can die :*(

Dilan Hernandez - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 10:54:52 PM

NOOOOO.

He can? DAMN.

Steph Barnezz - Sat. Dec. 31, 2011 at 01:58:14 PM

BUT

He can only really die if you kill him, fall from a massive height (at which you die anyway), is hit by a massive attack (he has 1000-and-something health), or is hit by an AOE spell while he is "kneeling". Most of the time, when he is taken down by an enemy, they move on from him while he's kneeling like most NPC's with "essential NPC" status

Tom Abrams - Sun. Dec. 11, 2011 at 06:52:57 PM

Yeah..

What about Odahviing? He's definitely better... he's an effing dragon!

Maxime Scott - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 04:06:04 PM

lol... conmpanions you say?

actually i have the arch-mage robe and morokei and i can perfectly defeat strong enemies on my own :S i think companions are just no fun at all... ruins the beauty of the game!

Dilan Hernandez - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 10:57:25 PM

You don't play Master difficulty.

Unless you play on Master difficulty, don't gloat.

Daniel Epikuros - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 12:46:22 AM

Donkey Companion

For me, the firts use of the companion sometimes is like a donkey to carry heavy things. Just need to "fast Travel" anywhere and he pops by my side with all the trash on his pokets instead of mine (so I can still run)

Gamal Ashraf - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:58:19 PM

Eola Is the ONE

She does conjuration, destruction, sneaking, great in a sword fight, perfect with dual staffs and most importantly won't rush into combat and ruin your sneak attack...

Daniel Bailey - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:57:23 PM

All Companions and a special kick for Barbas

Have one thing in common regardless of who they are an what level you where when you met them an that is blocking your damn path an barbas that no good deadric son of a ***** is the worst (if your the sneaky type) as his continuous barking alerts the enemy at every turn an after a mere 5 levels of putting up with him blocking my way causing me to reload a few times an getting me killed on plenty of occasions by his barking an alerting every enemy in ear shot which when they happen to be draug deathlords an your only a level 5 tend to be a real pain in the arse so when i finally finish the mission im so gonna enjoy killing that ***** of a dog

Peter Polygalov - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:54:37 PM

Argis the Bulwark

idk about you guys but i was really happy with Argis the Bulwark , housecarl in Markath. I felt like he is actually an understanding friend not some NPC. He is also really strong and is awesome at duel wielding if equipped with a 2nd weapon

Ammon Lauritzen - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:45:05 PM

J'zargo? Really? Feh.

Khajit is a wimp - AND he wants you dead. Not the best companion. I strapped him into dwarfmail and we walk into the nearest Falmar mine. First fight against 2 or 3 opponents, he runs into the corner cowering then gets himself killed.

Craig Mccarthy - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:22:29 PM

AHTAR?!

How has nobody said ahtar! seriously ive had this guy sense i was level 19 and im level 40 now and he STILL takes on dragons by himself.

Troels Andersen Kjær - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:21:02 PM

Argis the Bulward

I have made my home in Markarth, and my housecarl, Argis the Bulwark, is my trusty companion through many battles. Argis doesn't take **** from dragons, he -murders- them for fun. Also, and I'm sure I'm being superstitious, Argis has always seemed somewhat smarter than my other companions. Any day now he's publishing that paper on quantum mechanics.

Troels Andersen Kjær - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:19:27 PM

Matthew Morrow - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:00:30 PM

Sven!

Hah! And all this time I have been giving Sven (my companion) two-handed axes and sending him into the fray as if he was braveheart. No wonder he kinda' sucked :P Not once did I allow him to make me a single potion, I feel like such a n00b. But still! I dig Sven especially when he says "I don't think I like where this is going" good times ...

Graeme Reed - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:34:39 PM

Sven

I feel so bad then, ;p neh hot so much, I sacrificed Sven to Boethia; he's dead now. No more Sven.

Alex Siegel - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 06:24:22 PM

Faendal

I sacrificed Faendal to Boethia when I was level 50, because I figured he was worthless since I met him at level 1 and never used him anyways.

Dominic Rosario - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:00:26 PM

Uthgerd the Unbroken...

is one bada** tank wench! Aside from the fact that you get to punch her in the face for a few minutes on a bet just to prove you're worthy of her company, she comes fresh with a set of full plate and a greatsword! Not bad with a bow either, just load her up with the good stuff and thank the Nine that she's on YOUR side. A word of caution for all you sneaks, Uthgerd is an honorable brute and won't think twice about using your head for melon practice if she witnesses you pickpocket or murder someone. Keep your nose clean and this amazon killjoy will happily watch your back or die trying! http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Uthgerd_the_Unbroken

Riccardo Fantallen Imbriano - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 03:51:36 AM

Uthgerd!!!

Yes! Uthgerd is the best fccckin tank in the whole game! She kills everyone and she never dies!

Chad Edwards - Wed. Dec. 21, 2011 at 10:27:17 AM

THIS

Thank you! Hard to believe she didn't make the list at all. Definately recommend getting rid of the 2H weapons, I gave her a leveled mace and shield. That lady does work! The ONLY time I've had her die was against a dragon where she got trapped in a corner.

Ishaan Ишaaн Tйaги Tyagi - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:53:44 PM

Embracing darkness.

Lucien Lachance turns out to be the coolest while travelling all around in skyrim...totally reminds me of oblivion with the lines and comments about the places i go to..tut tut there should have been more of the dark brotherhood quests.(not the night mother's repetitive ones)

Anders Roligheten - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:48:57 PM

companions are for sissys

I had Lydia a while, then she died (thank Talos) and then I bought some orc chick who followed me till I needed to fill a black soul gem. Stayed Lone Wolf ever since. I remember the companions got intruduced with the Tribunal Expansion to Elder Scrolls 3. Since then I've thought they're more trouble than fun. :D

Brandon Reek - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 04:11:23 PM

companions are for your house... they are your watchdogs for intruders

I'm an assassin and never used a companion because they get in the way... i'm on xbox 360 and play on master.. because i basically one-hit everything (stealth attacks) i level up faster on master. anyways, good luck with killing your housecarls if you store items in your house LOL. did you know you can get robbed if you don't have a housecarl in your house? yeah. you can. they can take everything. have fun with that

Josh Reaves - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:47:13 PM

Mjoll!

What about MJOLL?!?!?!?!?!

Ammon Lauritzen - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:42:39 PM

Mjoll!

Mjooooooooll! She's really talkative - but scales to a good level and seems to be a bit more indestructable than normal companions.

David Hindby - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 06:27:00 PM

Mjoll!

It is documented that she is the only NPC that cannot die, since I am playing a hybrid battle mage/archer who sneaks around bit as a nightingale. I found the most annoying thing with companions there ability to trigger all the traps, stumble around and somehow always get themselves killed from friendly fire. Hence I research and did the quest to gain Mjoll as my companion. Whats the point of having a pack mule to care extra loot when they keep dying from friendly fire. I just wish she would shut up! Its even worse if you marry, glad I saved the game before that so I could go back and do a virtual divorce.

Nicholas Parrott - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 09:26:53 PM

Mjoll

Annoying yes, not marriable, but...is Mjoll worth the recruitment...

Lucho Hildebrandt - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:44:37 PM

Mike Parsons - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 09:26:27 PM

Just lame

Well that is just lame.......having a companion is one of the best things in Skyrim!!! Yes, I understand you like fighting on your own, but having a second hand in the game is just pure awesomeness. Dont be stubborn

Jamie Gray - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:37:49 PM

J'zargo

Unfortunately I killed J'zargo on accident so now i can't recruit him :(

Elliot Deeks - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:35:53 PM

Where the **** is my big man benor, been with me from like... day 6 or something, never let me down, cracking guy. Son i am dissapoint.

Mel Barraza-Kennedy - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:35:16 PM

Companions...

I'm stuck with Lydia cause she has been there since the begining and we have been through a lot. She has my old Ebony Armor and lets face it. I have one bad ass companion. lol Sadowmere is my second companion and I love it that he helps me kill enemies. I refuse for any of my companions dying on me and thats when healing hands plays a big role. But I am a mage with heavy armor as well.

Marco Mitic - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:35:08 PM

Marcurio

I have been adventuring with Marcurio for most part of the game, best 500 septims ever spent. Since I'm heavy dual-wielding tank I go straight in fight and Marcurio mostly shocks few opponents at time from safe distance. Useful lad. He also doubles as pack mule :) I had few other fighter companions before him, but they rushed into battle and got killed, so my Breezehome is mostly empty (except for numerous treasures, ingots, armors and weapons I found along the way).

Senne Van den Abbeele - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:34:56 PM

Kharjo

Or at least I think that's his name is another nice Khajit, okay he doesn't wield magic but he's a nice obedient fellow always saying stuff like: 'Khajit follows', "Khajit will carry some of your burden" and other similar things.. He makes me feel like a real BOSS.. Although he's got this geeky side where he goes: "If an enemy sneaks up on us I'd smell him out.. or maybe I won't, we'll see" ;p Now, not really reassuring ;p

Tony Picknell - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:34:23 PM

Aela

Aela works for me because she's useful in close combat AND ranged as an archer, and as one of the companion leaders, she also has a 'shop' with which you get free money from if you marry her. Which you can just turn around and spend on archery lessons. Win!

Autumn Hurst - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 04:04:27 PM

she is my favorite so far!

Dirigibug Spanner - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:21:20 PM

Lucien Lachance

I understand he's not really a companian but i love Lucien Lachance *spoiler*. After that, gotta say Cicero. After that J'zargo. Two epic Khajiit running around? Hellz yeah! (I am Khajiit)

Marc Kennedy - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:21:15 PM

Azuras follower

No mention for the Mage that can join you after completing the Azura quest, the reason I don't know her name is because I haven't used her for ages because she kept killing everything and I hardly got to fight. the stray dog is also epic he followed me without me really knowing where he came from, seeing this scrappy little dog battle a dragon for his new master is heart warming lol

He used to go to the bards college for a while...

Erandur doesn't even get a mention? But he makes just interesting conversation. Really, just head to Solitude. He'll tell you his experience with the Bards college... lots and lots and lots of times.

Eli Power - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:08:49 PM

A lot of this is wrong

Lydia specializes in one handed, block, heavy armor, and archery just like all of the other house carols not two handed. and any of the followers you marry will set up a shop (it will be a misc store). you can not have the dog from the deadric mission b/c he goes straight to the destination where the vampire cave, and your companions DO LEVEL WITH YOU if they didn't there would be no point in playing the game with a follower they just level in their own specializations you have to give them better armor just as you would give yourself (according to their skills). its just like fallout companions as far as their level goes....

Sal Basile - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:13:25 PM

Not Entirely True

"A follower's stats are determined based on the level the player is at when he or she first enters the zone that the follower is in. Once generated, the follower's stats do not increase at all. For example, Lydia is usually one of the first followers players will have access to, and most players receive her at a lower level. As such, most players' Lydias will have low stats for the entire game."

Eli Power - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:21:11 PM

oh yeah?

"Skills: All followers have a specific set of skills, which improve as their level increases." "Levels: Most followers automatically level up when you do, so there's no need to worry about a follower, "falling behind" if you go off and adventure on your own, or want to work with someone else for a while" -Prima Official Game Guide for The Elder Scrolls V Skryim

Alex Garlow - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 11:17:17 AM

COMPANIONS LEVELS

Excuse me Sal, but if you're going to write an article about a game. Please make sure you actually play the game and learn as much about it first. Companions do in fact increase in level along-side you. They have a specific set of skills which increase, so to never become useless. I won't be the second person to quote official writings on you, just do your research please. Because my friend, you are wrong.

Mike Parsons - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 09:33:28 PM

Barbas

Barbas will follow you if you dont kill him and accept Clavicus Vile's mission afterwards......he only wanders away from you before accepting to retrieve the axe he wants..........youre stupid haha

shadowmare

he can do die a dragon managed to kill him :(

M. Eric Carr - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:17:04 PM

Shadowmere

Apparently he can respawn, though. He died climbing the outside of a tower to kill a bandit archer at the top (won, too, but then fell to his death). I was bummed out, but a while later, he reappeared. The only downside is that he's *very* aggressive and loves to run in between you and an enemy you're about to firebolt into Oblivion. Not too bright, that one.

Travis Johnson - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:20:00 PM

Shadowmere

Go back to where he died about 15 days later. He should respawn. If not there he may respawn at his little bubbly waterhole thing where you first got him

Travis Johnson - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:20:57 PM

Something-another The sword maiden!

J-whatever her name is! The House-Carl from Solitude? I love her. :D She's like Lydia, but doesn't die really quickly and has a good attitude when I make her my personal pack-mule. Stuck her with a glass sword and full dragon armor. She's amazing. :D But seriously.. Lydia died a lot on me.. I also like that chick from the blackwater (darkwater?) crossing! She was pretty good. But had a bad habit of disappearing on me towards the end of our journeys.. (I assume she died.. or just went missing. Went into a cave with her, and when I came out, she was nowhere to be seen.)

Alex Garlow - Fri. Dec. 9, 2011 at 11:05:52 AM

I got you bro.

Jordis the Sword-Maiden from Solitude. 1,000,000 times better than Lydia. And Annekke Crag-Jumper. Another personal favorite of mine. I sometimes wonder about this article, and how much the author really played the game..

Korie Wood - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:03:44 PM

J'zhargo

Will j'zhargo be at your level when you first meet him or once you have completed his mission. I have levelled up by at least 20 since i accepted his mission

Sal Basile - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:10:22 PM

Companion Levels

A potential follower's level is based on your own level when you first entered the zone containing them. That means whenever you entered the Hall of Attainment at the College of Winterhold, J'zargo copied your level.

Lydia is my #1

I gotta say, this list felt wrong for me from the start. Placing Lydia last just feels wrong, since she's my favorite. In all fairness, I haven't tried using all the different companions yet, but no matter how many I use, I always go back to Lydia. If she dies, I reload to the latest save, no matter how much progress I lose.

Guilty

I'm guilty of the same thing! Unfortunately, companions stay the same level the minute you enter the zone containing them. So Lydia will be pretty weak for you toward the end of the game, and start to become a burden!

M. Eric Carr - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:19:58 PM

Lydia, reloaded

You can apparently disable and re-enable her, using PC console commands; this will cause her to recopy your level. Might want to save and hold on to her items for her while doing this, though. "Hold still -- this won't hurt a bit. Probably."

Mage in heavy armor?

Well...that would be me

Ben Potter - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 01:53:16 PM

Derkeethus!

Only argonian follower in the game! Super cool man lizard....

Alicia Rose Reese - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 01:52:46 PM

Faendal rocks my world!

Maybe I am a sucker for Elves, or maybe not. But! I lvoe Faendal! He's a flippin BA, and I never use him to do the archery cheat! He wears light armor, is a killer shot and not to mention, he's hilarious! And he's free! I am excited for J'zargo, though! Might have to use him.

Steven Stojcevski - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 05:27:10 PM

Agreed!

Faendal was my first ever companion. I think he appeals to me because I'm a Bosmer too, and with both of us firing arrows at enemies, they're lucky if they even get to melee range.

Ben Potter - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 01:52:42 PM

Derkeethus!

Only argonian follower in the game, awesome man/ lizard!

Elisabeth Blackwood - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 01:50:46 PM

Mjoll

I think Mjoll, found wandering around Riften *****ing about the thieves guild, is an awesome companion as well. You get her to tell you how she lost her sword Grimsever, which sets you up on a quest to recover it from a Dwemer ruin. You do that and give it back to her and she'll offer to follow you around. You can also marry her if you want and she'll set up a little shop that earns you money! She's a good companion to have at your back, and she's wicked good with that sword you fetched for her.

What the author doesn't understand...

What the author of this article doesn't understand are two VERY key elements to companions and that is that a) Companions never level up and b) Companions are always at the level YOU were when you first spawned/met them. Take that into consideration as well for when it comes to identifying the best/strongest companion.

Sal Basile - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 08:47:54 AM

Understood!

Thanks for reading! I am aware of the companions static stats though, which is why the characters you meet later in the game are higher up on the list! Companions stats stay the same the minute you walk into the zone that contains them. That's why you should wait as long as you can to meet J'zargo!

Caleb Schatzman - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 01:50:26 PM

I AM DISAPPOINT

That you forgot Erandur, Priest of Mara! That crazy awesome bastard from Vaermina's quest with his mace and destruction magic and readily trading in his robes for heavy armor...I mean sheesh! J'zargo may want you to light yourself on fire but Erandur wants you to take a potion that makes you travel through time into someone else's memories then break a flippin' rock before you got and piss of a daedric prince by breaking her stick. I think he wins. http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Erandur

Mike Mamerow - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 02:06:54 PM

Listen to this genius

Erandur is the best! He's also always got some interesting story to say about every place you visit and he doesn't whine about carrying your stuff. In fact, he's borderline enthusiastic about storage!

Charles Hoebanx - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 03:29:35 PM

Seems you're wrong...

Actually, a 'getleve'l on console gave me 19 for Erandur - highest potential follower I've met so far, and I'm a 24 now. When I first met him, I was barely an 8... But I agree on the non-leveling part, indeed.

Levi Verschuur - Wed. Dec. 7, 2011 at 06:20:12 PM

faendal

faendal can level you up to lvl 50 archery... for free. sven sucks.

Sal Basile - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 08:48:52 AM

Exploit?

We found this to be a bit of an exploit and it took away from the game for us. Sven, on the other hand, adds to the immersion of traveling around Skyrim! We're suckers for jolly tunes.

Kimmer Webb - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 01:49:03 PM

Welll

Wouldn't your little invincible Barbas trick take away from the game too hmmm?

Jake Adamson - Sun. Dec. 11, 2011 at 05:52:23 AM

Yup

Busted.

Victoria Long - Wed. Dec. 7, 2011 at 10:01:27 AM

Aranea = Awesome.

She also has lightening and ice-bolts. I needed a mage companion and she fit the bill perfectly.

Sal Basile - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 08:49:25 AM

Awesome!

Thanks for reading! Aranea is definitely one of the better companions.

Jason Xay - Wed. Dec. 7, 2011 at 09:30:09 AM

Erandur

Well adept at Destruction and Restoration magic, he can be found in Dawnstar and acquired as a companion upon completing his quest(so long as you make the right choice ;)). Depending on where you travel to, he will have unique and personal dialogue associated with the location. For instance if you travel to Solitude with him, he will let you know about his past with the Bard's College.

Sal Basile - Thu. Dec. 8, 2011 at 08:49:53 AM

Erandur

Erandur was a close runner-up! Thanks for reading!

Josef Bugajski - Sat. Jan. 7, 2012 at 04:53:52 PM
