City building and management simulation games tend to be a rare sight, especially on consoles. But those diehards among us who enjoy building an economy and running everything to our specifications found solace in Tropico 3, with the island dictatorship sim hitting the Xbox 360. Now developer Haemimont Games and publisher Kalypso Media are back for more with the upcoming release of Tropico 4.

The base aspects of Tropico 4 are the same as its predecessors. You'll still fill the shoes of a bushy bearded dictator, and you'll be given full control over your island to do as you see fit. Whether you want to hold open, honest elections and win the loyalty of your people or form a military junta and send all dissenters to a banana plantation is totally up to you. Youll develop the island; deal with factional rifts, international politics and forming new laws. Tropico 4 doesnt set out to revolutionize the franchises gameplay, but instead takes a look at what worked and what didnt in Tropico 3 and builds from there.

The game adds two dozen new buildings, including rollercoasters and nuclear power plants, 20 new missions and nearly a dozen new maps. These new maps also provide a drastic increase in map size by providing three or four times the amount of space as offered in Tropico 3. The game also adds in some graphic enhancements that improve the visual quality of the game, especially when focusing on a close-up view of your islands and citizens.

And you might find yourself looking closely at your citizens often. Tropico 4 includes detailed information on all your citizens you can zoom down to street level, watch them do their jobs, and view their skills, income, family, and more. You can even take these citizens and appoint them to a special council that handles your edicts between yourself and your citizens. In true Tropico fashion, who you appoint to these councils have implications on your island politics. If you pick someone well-versed in the ways of the task theyre assigned to, theyll perform well but they may push back against some of your decisions. On the flip side, should you hire a total idiot, they may be unable to handle their duties, but they wont have much to say when you issue a dictatorial order that conflicts with their duty.

Another significant change in the game is disasters both man-made and natural. While previous iterations of the game included weather disaster notifications, they were fairly minor youd get a notification that a few citizens have died or that a few buildings were damaged or destroyed. In this game, the disasters are actually disasters. Oil spills can devastate your ocean food sources or economy, while volcanoes can raid down fire and destruction on your islanders. How you handle the aftermath is up to you, and will affect your islands production and economy.

Tropico 4 also brings the games political economy into the 21st century. While youll initially start off in the familiar setting of dealing with the United States and the Soviet Union, the fall of the USSR leads to the introduction of more modern powers, such as the oil-heavy Middle East and the growing superpower of China. These countries adjust the dynamics of power and your relationships, as your policies may increase your standing with one nation but decrease it with the others.

If youve enjoyed previous Tropico games, Tropico 4 is looking to be your cup of tea with a lot more depth, improvements and content. If you havent played a Tropico game before, this one is worth watching games that combine city building and political intrigue are rare on the Xbox 360.
