Resident Evil Revelations - Your Questions?

Resident Evil Revelations has arrived in the IGN offices. As we play through the game for next week's review, we're learning all sorts of interesting things about Capcom's latest entry in the survival horror series. We've already written extensively about the game, but we're sure you have questions that we haven't addressed.

Now's your chance to ask. Over the next few days, we'll pull questions up from the comments thread and attempt to answer them to the best of our ability. Keep in mind we're not going to give you our review score or dish out juicy spoilers. And we'll only be able to answer within a certain scope of the game, so if you ask if zombies are in the game, and the final boss is a zombie, we're not going to tell you.

There have been several points where I have jumped. I'd say it's more creepy than scary. Obviously it depends on the environment - both in the game and where you happen to be when you're playing it. The ship is the only location that has provided a tense enough atmosphere to truly provide surprises. No other location has. From what I've played so far, I'm almost wishing the game was only only set on the ship. It's that much better than the other locations.

That said, there are definitely some great, great moments in the game. At the very least you'll find yourself saying "Oh s**t!" at a couple points. I never really found myself saying that in RE5, that's for sure.



I'm not quite done with it, but I'm expecting it to be about as long as other RE games - perhaps a bit longer. It depends on how you're playing, if you stop to stare at pretty things, and so on.

For the most part you'll feel like everything is up to you outside of scripted events where the two of you are coordinating hitting switches or things of that nature. Every now and then my partner would actually prove useful. I never found anyone particularly helpful - but in a way that's a good thing. I don't want the AI to do everything for me.

That depends. The basic controls are decent enough. By default they are the series' traditional "tank controls." You can strafe by holding down L, do quick turns and move and shoot - provided you keep the aiming laser fixed. I've never been a huge critic of how RE has controlled because I understand what they're trying to do. That said, they are deliberately limiting, which can be annoying. If you hate them, no doubt you'll want to seek an alternative.

The Circle Pad Pro does give the game a decent substitute control scheme, but it's not without its problems, mostly due to the device itself. It's proven a bit jarring to adjust to this method of control, mostly because of the tactile differences between the two circle pads - the Pro's analog slider has a different resistance than the system's. You'll definitely need to get used to that, and maybe even change some of the sensitivity settings to compensate. Ultimately I am finding the traditional controls, where I have to stand still and place shots, to be preferable, even with their "forced" limitations. We'll see how I feel after a few more hours of play.



Not including your knife, Genesis scanner and herbs, you can hold three weapons. These weapons can be modified at special modification tables that are spread throughout the ship.

The vast, vast... vast majority of the time you have a partner, no matter who you are or what you're doing. Typically you're playing as Jill with Parker as a partner or Chris with Jessica as a partner. There are some exceptions to that.

That's tough to gauge as some folks will have different definitions of what's action and what's horror. I'm about two-thirds of the way through the game, and I find the game becoming more and more about action. Barring whatever might come, I found the mix to generally be quite good. Again, though, I wish I was always on the ship. It's honestly the closest setting to the Arklay Mansion from the first Resident Evil, in my opinion. The location has the perfect mix of spooky aesthetic and claustrophobic design while still retaining some great diversity (casino!) because it's technically a cruise ship.

No, they do not, which is why I generally don't care what they're doing. They're never outright necessary to survive a combat situation, nor do they deliberately screw you over. They don't lose health, they don't take your ammo, so they're sort of a non-issue. In my view, that's a good thing. They do provide some amusing commentary and allow characters to talk and have some personality. Jill would seem a little crazy if she was mumbling to herself while walking down hallways, after all.
