Info on CCP's announced but as-yet-unseen World of Darkness MMORPG has been scarce, but today we see an interview (spotted by WoDNews.net) with Senior Producer Chris McDonough discussing how he and his team of industry veterans are going about turning a pen-and-paper RPG into a videogame. That indicates the game is still very much in development (despite rumors to the contrary) though there're still no in-game screenshots or video. Read More »
Skyrim is a fantasy world of magical lore and devastating mythical beasts -- but that doesn't mean it can't be realistic. For gamers who prefer their adventures as believable as possible, I've gathered up a collection of awesome mods that make Skyrim feel a little more like reality, including true-to-life physics, making eating chicken and naptime relevant, and a reason to close your bedroom door tightly while changing clothes, away from Lydia's peeping eyes. The final days of World War II were some of the most chaotic times of the war, with both the Russians and American armies racing to Berlin and claim as much Nazi technology as they could get their hands on. Oh, and trying to put an end to that god-awful war. This is the world of Sniper Elite V2 where players will be tasked to enter war-torn Berlin as American sniper Karl Fairburne, and rescue (or eliminate) the scientists who are responsible for Hitler's deadly rocket program. An investigative forum user over at NeoGAF has uncovered some interesting information about Eidos Montreal's upcoming addition to the Thief franchise, Thief 4 (or Thi4f... as it's sometimes called in geek speak). According to the resumes of a few outspoken Eidos employees, the stealth game will feature some kind of online mode and will also utilize the popular Unreal Engine 3. Read More »
Plenty of game characters have scored cameo hat appearances in Team Fortress 2, including some characters from Saints Row: The Third. But now the cross-promotion is heading the other way. On Tuesday, Steam owners of the latest Saints Row game will get access to nine gigantic "masks", each of which look like one of Team Fortress' famous fighters... only much bigger. Read More »
Whether you like what they sell or not, it's hard to deny that Razer is one of the most innovative PC peripheral manufacturers around at the moment. Just look at their latest invention, the so-called "Project Fiona", which looks like an iPad mixed with a PS3 controller. According to Razer CEO and co-founder Min-Liang Tan, however, the company is "sick and tired" of being the only innovative kid on the block, and he's called on the rest of the industry to start taking more risks. This weekend saw a blaze of twitter and message board activity debating the truth of a rumor concerning THQ's future gaming line-up. The unsourced rumor, tweeted by industry veteran Kevin Dent, purported that THQ had cancelled its entire 2014 line-up, including the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 MMO titled Dark Millennium Online. THQ has since issued a somewhat ambiguous statement on the rumor, assuring fans that its 2014 line-up is safe, while it "has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO." Read More »
One of Mass Effect 3's lead writers has promised the game will deliver a deeper, more emotionally-compelling storyline, particularly when it comes to its lead character, Shepard. Speaking to BioWare's own promotional news service, Mac Walters said the writing team had been doubled since the release of the original Mass Effect, meaning writers now had more time to focus on making Shepard a more realistic character. Like it or hate it, free-to-play revenue schemes seem to represent the future of MMORPGs (unless the game happens to have the words "Star Wars" somewhere in its title). The latest MMO to jump on the "free" bandwagon is Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising, which has just reduced its initial start-up cost, and scrapped subscription fees, in an effort to attract players before its full transformation into F2P sometime soon. The so-called "Ver. 2012" update for Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition was released for consoles last month, but PC fighting fans (yes... they do actually exist) were left with the original, untweeked build. But not for much longer! Developer Capcom says it has been "cracking the whip" on its poor programmers, and expects the PC patch to be ready in late February. Read More »
It's a slow news day... and it's a Sunday to boot... so why don't we just forget the constant stream of news updates for a little while, and instead watch 20 minutes of the Tribes: Ascend beta. Sound like a good idea? Of course it does, because this free-to-play FPS is looking like one of the standout PC shooters of 2012. Read More »
First Battlefield 3, now Mass Effect 3. BioWare has confirmed that PC players of Mass Effect 3 will need to access the game via Origin, the digital distribution service owned by publisher Electronic Arts. What's more, BioWare has also confirmed that ME3 will not be available on Steam... meaning players who want to purchase a digital copy of the game will probably end up going through Origin as well. The upcoming military RTS game, Wargame: European Escalation, looks mind-bogglingly massive. Maps can be as large as 150 square kilometers and can feature up to 100 million scenery objects (which is quite a few pine trees and picket fences). Moreover, there are 361 unique units for players to command, including troops, tanks, aircraft and artillery. You can check out a mere handful of these units in a new trailer after the jump... The South Korean ratings board has been brooding over whether to ban Diablo III for more than a month now. The issue is not Diablo III per se, but the game's "auction house" feature, which enables players to sell in-game loot for real-world money. Some in the Korean government had argued this feature was akin to gambling. Well, Korean Diablo fans can rejoice, because the game has been passed for release... minus the auction house. Read More »
Earlier this week GameSpy pleaded with readers to sign an online petition asking publisher Namco Bandai to consider releasing its excellent action-RPG Dark Souls for the PC. Well, good news! It seems someone over at Namco HQ in Tokyo has noticed the groundswell of internet support, because an administrator has told the official forums that the company has been overwhelmed by the response.
