Judging solely from the covers, it would be easy to write off Deathstroke as just one more action book with too much '90s testosterone and nothing else. But the series has managed to do better by its protagonist. Issue #5 is just one more enjoyable chapter in Kyle Higgins' run.

In issue #5, Higgins explores Slade's past a bit more, showing how Peabody came into the picture. It's also an action-heavy romp as Slade encounters the newest villain to bear the name legacy. Needless to say, this fight won't be as easy as the last one was.

Unfortunately, the issue does feel a bit more sparse than the previous chapters, as once the action ramps up the pages just blow by. The plus side is that Higgins and artist Joe Bennett achieve a new level of spectacle. The shot of Legacy tossing a blimp is quite something. Bennett isn't much for facial work or emotion, but he's more than capable of tackling big action.

Sparse or not, Higgins doesn't neglect the characterization in this issue. He strikes a proper balance between maintaining Slade's mystique and showcasing just enough vulnerability for readers to sympathize with the character. There's plenty of big action, but this isn't a dumb book by any stretch.
