NeverDead stars an immortal hero named Bryce Boltzmann who, alongside his partner Arcadia, works for an agency tasked with defeating demonic incursions. When demons from the dawn of time emerge on present-day Earth, players guide Bryce on his mission to seek and destroy the hostile invaders. As NeverDead’s monster menagerie shows its variety with bigger and nastier adversaries, the side-effect of Bryce’s immortality is revealed. When attacked, Bryce can be torn limb from limb, but will nevertheless survive and can reattach any missing limbs. Even when all limbs have been removed, players can roll around as a head, looking to reattach lost parts. Players can also use their amputated body parts as weapons, throwing arms into clusters of monsters, or throwing their head into seemingly impossible areas to gain access to new sections of the NeverDead map.
Happy Thursday everybody! So just a mid-month check, how is everyone doing on their New Year's resolutions? I'm still going strong, but only because my resolution was minimal enough that it doesn't really impact my life significantly. I feel bad for everyone who's trying to quit drinking or smoking cold turkey, so if that's you, good luck! And don't play any online completive games that will drive you into a rage.
What has everyone been playing lately? I haven't had a lot of time to pour into games, so Skyrim and Deus Ex:HR are on a furlough, Minecraft and Plants Vs. Zombies taking up my free minutes. The recent Diablo III news has got me itching to jump back and play some more of the beta; I just hope that the early February release date comes true.
I ran across this video today, and it just reminded me how downright evil cats are, so as a public service announcement, don't own any cats. Enjoy your weekend!
Hakan Abrak, Lead Producer on Hitman Absoultion talked to Joystiq about the balance of stealth versus action in the upcoming title. Well aware of the critisism that this addition has 'sold out' and given up its stealthy gameplay in favor of more run and gun type action Abrak clarified "First and foremost, what we’re trying to convey is that Hitman is still very much about stealth." Continuing "In earlier installments, if you went into action, every enemy would come after you – you felt like a failure, like you had done something wrong. We really wanted to do that differently here, so if you play action, we think it should be a compelling experience and we think we’ve achieved that. If you want to switch between stealth and action, you should have the freedom to do so."
If Hitman Absolution can pull off their plan to seamlessly blend more intense action with the stealth gameplay, without sacrificing the stealth elements, I definitely think it will be a good step forward for the series. This dynamic should make for a more cinematic experience; it is still extremely important however to make the player feel rewarded and accomplished for completing a smooth mission and making a hit look like an accident. Part of what made that experience rewarding in previous games is that the game was very punishing if you tried to run and gun. Only time will tell if Absolution will be able to pull off the best of both worlds.
Riot announced today that they are officially taking a stand against SOPA / PIPA. Riot got specific about the dangers of SOPA and how it relates to the LoL community:
Attacks our community. Aspects of our service such as the official forums and potentially even in-game chat, could be taken down or have their features reduced based on user behavior.
Other harmful effects. SOPA/PIPA undermine established intellectual property legislation like the DMCA, raise serious constitutional free speech issues, and could even compromise the basic security infrastructure of the internet.
Riot even had their lawyer answering questions today on Reddit. To add even more power to the punch, Congressman Jared Polis turns out to be an avid LoL player who has joined Riot in opposition of the bill. Joining other big names like Google, Reddit, Amazon, Twitter, and Facebook, SOPA is justly running into some stiff opposition.
IncGamers.com spotted a post on the official Xbox Facebook site for Australia and New Zeland - claiming that Diablo III is officially coming to the Xbox 360.
Is this a case of someone jumping the gun before an official announcement or hopeful thinking on their part?
Obviously an Xbox version would make a lot of sense financially, but could risk angering some of Diablo's more hardcore PC fan base effectively buy Blizzard a reputation for 'selling out'. As long as the gamepaly and quality aren't compromised, I'd be OK with a console version, though I'm sure with the lower spec 'cartoony' graphics and the delay from the end of 2011 to 'early 2012', some will already be laying the blame on a console sellout.
The first update since the 1.0 release of Minecraft should be released tomorrow according to a tweet from Jens Bergensten who took over as Minecraft lead developer back in early December 2011. Jeb's tweet "Also, I think we'll update Minecraft to 1.1 tomorrow..." seems pretty clear that the 1.1 update will go live tomorrow some time.
The 1.1 update will include a number of changes including sheep that will once again re-grow thier wool, the way ladders work, biome tweaks, and more.
The talk of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s demise is apparently premature. Visitors to the Official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Facebook Page will notice the following message:
The Stalker team is extremely happy! Why? Because we are continuing work on Stalker 2 after the holidays.
I am personally very happy about this. A series this awesome should not be allowed to perish.
Thanks to ItBurn for the good news.
And now for the celebration loot part...
To celebrate the game's one-year anniversary, players will receive a special one-of-a-kind One Year Anniversary Cape that features a number "1" on the back. The cape will be granted to players through their mission journal on January 11. The character must exist on the 11th to be eligible to receive the mission. However, players do not need to log in on the 11th; as long as the character exists on the 11th, players will receive the mission the next time they log in.
AMY takes place in December 2034 in the small town of Silver City (Midwest, USA) after a comet strikes, wreaking havoc on humanity and unleashing a deadly virus that has infected almost everyone. Players take on the role of Lana, who regains consciousness in the midst of all the mayhem. The world she once identified with seems to have been torn to Hell, and most of the people she knew have now become part of a wild horde. Lana feels the virus beginning to infect her and knows she must run as far as possible to escape the nightmare. The presence of the titular Amy, a seemingly defenseless eight-year-old autistic girl who has curious powers, forces her to make choices that will affect both their lives. Together, they must fight or run from the infected humans, demons and the military, in the hope of not only saving each other, but also the future of humanity.
"Some of the more powerful spells require time to be fully activated and they can't be cast while the hero is involved in melee combat. When an enemy hero begins casting such a spell, you will receive a notification. And here comes the best part: spells and skills that have a casting time can be breached! If the caster is interrupted while activating the spell or skill, he won’t be able to finish it. He stops weaving the spell, and while it won't have any effect the spell’s Mana cost will still be lost."
Tripwire also made a special mention of three mods that had early access to a limited version of the SDK. I've posted some screens and trailers for these total conversions below.

After the former U.S. marine was detained while visiting Iran in August (supposedly to visit family), local daily newspaper Tehran Times published excerpts from a purported confession in which Hekmati admitted to helping create games designed to "manipulate public opinion in the Middle East" at New York City-based developer Kuma Reality Games, under the CIA's direction and payroll. An episode released to the Kuma/War community in 2007 called "Assault on Iran" involved a raid on an Iran nuclear power plant, although it does not appear that any other modules involving the country have been released for Kuma/War since.Hekmati allegedly said, "[Kuma] was receiving money from the CIA to (produce) and design and distribute for free special movies and games with the aim of manipulating public opinion in the Middle East. The goal of the company in question was to convince the people of Iran and the people of the entire world that whatever the U.S. does in other countries is a good measure."
One thing's for sure, this may very well be the first time that a game developer from any country has faced a death sentence over, among other things, the content of their game(s).
“As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio,” said VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines in an email.“As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go, he continued. “id is still recruiting and hiring qualified developers, and development work on future id titles continues unabated.”
Normally I get my fill of press releases and announcements just from the incoming games bits, but I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when I saw that Magnus aka Souleye released a new chiptunes album called "Adventure". Honestly there are very few modern day chiptune artists that I actually like enough to jam out to once in awhile, and Souleye captured me with his tracks for VVVVVV (which is now on the 3DS). Check him out if you enjoy a good chiptune track or two once in awhile like me.
Oh, and I've got a few videos for you guys this morning. Nothing too special, just an Honest Holiday Card courtesy of CollegeHumor, a look at a real-life version of Skyrim: 2012, and some Battlefield 3 shenanigans in the video below.
