After pushing 325,000 units in its first 48 hours on the market and just over 70,000 in the subsequent full week, PlayStation Vita was viewed as being in somewhat of a freefall. Now, with new sales data released covering the Japanese market from December 26th to January 1st, we have a more complete picture of how Vita is selling in Japan.
According to a Media Create report translated by Andriasang, in that time period, Vita sold an additional 42,648 units, bringing the grand total of PlayStation Vitas sold between December 17th and January 1st to around 440,000.

Vita continues to be outsold by its predecessor. PlayStation Portable sold 62,764 units in the same time period. But the real winner continues to be Nintendo 3DS, which sold more than four times the units Vita did. It pushed 197,952 units between December 26th and January 1st.
There's better news for Sony on the console front. PlayStation 3 outsold Xbox 360 27:1 during that same week. But Vita being outsold by 3DS in the range of 4:1 continues to call into question whether PlayStation Vita can command any sort of hold on the Japanese market without a big game, much like Monster Hunter helped sell PSPs.
The top 20 sales data for software was also released, which showed no PlayStation Vita software. However, this could be normal even in times of more positive sales for Vita, since any game on the handheld can be purchased digitally via the PlayStation Store. And that will obviously all change if new rumors of a Vita Monster Hunter game are true.
