Dark Horse

Founded by comics shop owner Mike Richardson in 1986, Dark Horse comics quickly grew to become the most successful independent publisher in the industry. Dark Horse's rapid ascent can be attributed to some fortunate licensing. In 1988, Dark Horse published Aliens #1, the first ever comic based on the Aliens movie franchise. It went on to six reprints and spawned a slew of offshoots, including the popular Aliens Vs. Predator, which sold more than 400,000 copies with its first issue. In 1991, Dark Horse gained the exclusive rights to publish original comic books based off the Star Wars license.

Dark Horse is also responsible for Frank Miller's Martha Washington and Sin City series, Mike Mignola's Hellboy and Joss Whedon's Fray. In the late '90s Dark Horse began publishing manga in the US. It's library of manga titles includes Trigun, Blade of the Immortal, Lone Wolf and Cub and Akira.
