Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance co-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor were on-hand Saturday to promote their hell raisin' Marvel sequel to the fanboys at New York Comic-Con.
The filmmakers, who patented their unorthodox and kinetic dirtecting style on the Crank films and Gamer, presented first look footage at the 3D movie, which finds Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) in hiding in remote Eastern Europe. Blaze is enlisted to aid a secret sect to save a boy (played by Fergus Riordan) from the devil himself (played by Deathly Hallows' Ciaran Hinds), a mission that will reluctantly require Blaze to embrace the Spirit of Vengeance again. Idris Elba plays Moreau, a character who offers Blaze a chance at redemption.
Taylor told fans that their Ghost Rider is meaner, darker and more intense than the Ghost Rider seen in the first film, while Neveldine said they tested what fire would do to leather hence the character's outfit looking like black, bubbling tar when he transforms.
The directors didn't necessarily diss the 2007 film, but they did emphasize that they wanted their film to stand separate from that one despite the fact that Nic Cage is back. Neveldine called himself a longtime Marvel Comics fan, and that they refamiliarized themselves with the source material by reading hundreds of comics before shooting. Neveldine specifically cited Garth Ennis' take on the character.
The directors also discussed the film's PG-13 rating, saying they came up with creative ways of getting around it by making it "PG-16" if you will. They have F-bombs in it and a high body count, including lots of burned bodies, but it all met with MPAA approval.
The panel opened with a behind-the-scenes featurette showcasing the directors' crazy, roller-blading style of shooting sequences culminating with a title card declaring "F***ing Your S*** Up in 3D in February 2012." They also showed a red band version of the trailer in 3D.
