SOPA Roundup For January 5th 2012

Lots of SOPA tidbits today; If you're unfamiliar yet find the issue exigent like Red-Cell does, you can catch up here and here and yes, even more here.

  • Rock, Paper, Shotgun has a nice running list of the companies who are ESA members and their stance on the bill.
  • Lamar Smith claimed that some opponents to the bill are a "vocal minority" and that complaints are "unfounded". Reddit users took issue with this, and directly challenged Lamar's comments that 'critics could not point out language that would harm the internet' in this video, and this video. Well played Redditors.
  • Epic Games officially declared that they do not support SOPA 'in it's current form':

    Hi folks,

Some people have asked how Epic feels about the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). This post is meant to provide answers. Epic Games supports efforts that would stop overseas websites profiting from pirating our games, but we have to do that in a way that's compatible with freedom of speech and due process of law. Thus, we do not support the current version of SOPA. We are members of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a trade organization that is working with legislators to refine the bill.

Best regards, Dana Cowley Senior PR Manager Epic Games, Inc.

  • Lastly, Forbes has a great article up Why the ESA is Wrong to Support SOPA, and does a good job of summing up in plain English why 'the ESA is wrong'.

New Character Art For Prototype 2
The following is an Official Blackwatch Communication, otherwise known as a little Alex Mercer character art from Prototype 2.

Alex Mercer

Alex Mercer was a brilliant scientist who worked for Gentek (the scientific arm of Blackwatch) prior to the initial Blacklight viral outbreak in NYC. He worked directly on the Blacklight virus, increasing its deadliness by 1000%. When news-leaks threatened the security of their work, Blackwatch closed the Blacklight project and ordered the entire staff killed. Mercer stole a sample of the virus and escaped but was later cornered at Penn Station in NYC. Rather than surrender, Mercer smashed the vial releasing the Blacklight virus. The Blackwatch soldiers gunned him down and he was pronounced dead.

Holy Shazbot, Firaxis Is Working On XCOM: Enemy Unknown!
Game Informer magazine revealed this morning that Firaxis is indeed working on a strategy (yes, strategy) style XCOM game. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is being developed by the studio best known for the Civilization franchise, independently of 2K Marin's XCOM FPS.

According to the article at GI, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is planned for release on the PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. It will have destructible environments, a real-time strategic view with turn-based combat, and some sort of research or progression system for the player's own XCOM organization to tap into. It sounds like this is the actual sequel that fans have been demanding, and it could hit as early as Fall 2012. Here's what Firaxis President Steve Martin had to say about the reveal:

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."
The February issue promises to have more details. In the mean time I'll be over here pinching myself to make sure this is real. I've got faith that Firaxis will knock this out of the park, and I hope EA takes note if that's the case with the Syndicate franchise. Strategy is not dead!

World of Tanks Introduces French Vehicles
- 3 Comments
Wargaming.net presents the new line of the French tanks available in World of Tanks Update 7.1. French vehicles make their way into the free-to-play MMO as of today.

"Our players already know how to play with the "big three" tank nations, but the French are all-different," says Mike Zhivets, Lead Game Designer for World of Tanks. "You'll have to reconsider the way you think tanks behave before they let you tame them. And that's what we love them for!" The second part of the French vehicles will appear later in 2012 and will include tank destroyers and SPGs.

Minecraft Meets Real-Time Strategy In "Castle Story"
A couple of guys formed "Sauropod Studio" after deciding that the new voxel / block building sensation sweeping the nation needed a little bit of an overhaul. Introducing Castle Story, a new real-time strategy kind of twist on a Minecraft like building game. Players direct a number of builders to harvest and utilize resources to build up, and then later destroy castles.

I'm sure our buddy Red-Cell will be among the first to get in a pre-order for this. We all know how much he loves block based games!

The AM Socket Stuffer

So I've started playing through Deus Ex:HR, picked it up for a fantastically low $10 and am really enjoying it so far. Even though I really like it, I've only played about an hour, and I'm afraid to play more. That's a constant problem for me in games that give you any kind of choice. I have a hard time getting to all of the games I want to play, let alone getting to finish all of the games I do play, let alone playing a game multiple times over. If you give me a choice and there is some consequence, I'm always afraid of what I'm missing out on, that I'm not playing it the "best" way, not getting the full experience. On the surface 'open world', 'you can play in a way that fits your style', and 'multiple endings' sound like a good thing, but it always ends up giving me a certain level of anxiety that detracts from my enjoyment of said game.

What about you guys? Would you rather the game world just told you 'who you are, why you care, and how you do it', and let you go about your business, or do you like to have 'sky is the limit' options and story branches? For those of you who have played through Deus Ex: HR multiple times, how would you recommend playing through?

If you're a Minecraft fan, and a nerd like me, check this out. Am I the only one that thinks a 3D printer would be fantastic to re-create a custom Settlers of Catan board? And now, happy New Year! Here's an obligatory reflective/uplifting speech by ... Hitler? Sure.

IncGamer points out that Diablo 3 could be delayed thanks to the Korean Rating board. Apparently they failed to decide on a rating today because of the real-money auction house in Diablo 3. In a later update, IncGamer posted a blurb from D3 Game Director Jay Wilson’s Twitter feed in which he states the following: "Asia is not what’s holding us back. You’ll see soon enough." /Hrm. New Details On Microsoft Flight & A Video
- 11 Comments
Microsoft Studios reveals details on Microsoft Flight, the new PC flight game from MS which will release as a free download this spring. The game will be free to play, with added content available for purchase and for Games For Windows Live accounts. GFWL accounts will also be able to access achievements and and an Online Pilot Profile. You can sign up for beta here.

In other news, Fly Away Simulation has posted an article detailing a recent trip to MS where they got a demonstration of Microsoft Flight.

In Microsoft Flight, players view the world from above in a visually stunning and realistic representation of the earth, complete with region-specific weather patterns, foliage, terrain and landmarks. Players can choose to take the helm using highly rendered, accurate cockpits and authentic piloting procedures, or simply use their mouse and keyboard to control the plane in an exterior view. More experienced players can tailor the flight controls to match their skill level, making Microsoft Flight easy for beginners while still challenging for the most accomplished PC pilots.

Microsoft Studios worked with the personal airplane manufacturing team at ICON Aircraft to give aviation fans the exclusive opportunity to fly the all-new ICON A5 before real-world production starts at the end of 2012. Designed by the world-class aeronautical engineers behind the Voyager spaceship, X-Prize winning SpaceShipOne, and Virgin Galatic’s SpaceShipTwo, the ICON A5 is the “jet ski for the skies,” a high-wing amphibious monoplane with a carbon fiber airframe and a comfortable, automobile-inspired cockpit with space for two. The ICON A5 will be the first aircraft available to players for free in Microsoft Flight.

Blah... Somebody Hit Me With The Derp Stick
- 36 Comments
So I've kind of been in this phase lately where I feel like my life has been passing by entirely too fast. It's almost like I'm not in sync with the age of my body, I feel like I'm still in my mid 20s. Then I came to the realization that I've spent most of my life wishing that time would go by fast, usually because I wanted something, which typically involved an upcoming game. Eventually the game would come, and I'd have my fun with it, only to eventually move on to repeat the cycle with yet another game.

When Sonic the Hedgehog was just about to launch on the Sega Genesis I would chase down the UPS truck every single day just to see if my pre-order came yet. At that time I really had no idea that the cycle of wanting games would be neverending, even though I had some glimpses with a handful of other games. I literally thought that Sonic would fulfill and even end my desire for new games pretty much indefinitely, which of course was not the case. To date there hasn't been a single game that I've been indefinitely satisfied with, even those that I have the most fond memories of.

Reflecting on all of this reminded me of some of my conversations with Billy Wilson, more or less how he spent his last few years trying to get me to give some of the views presented by Buddhism a chance. The whole second noble truth and all that, becoming uninterested or unsatisfied with what you have, and wanting more. How are you supposed to break free from that? Once in awhile I think about letting my gaming and swag collection go, and only holding on to what I'm actively playing. The only problem with that is now that games are going digital it's kind of hard to escape your epic games collection, and the desire of adding to it.

All I know is I'm at a point in my life now where I'd like time to actually slow down, but it seems like the older I get the faster it goes. I'd hate to wake up tomorrow and be a delusional 85 year old, especially one that can no longer be a f'in badass in Skyrim.
