AskMen's Take

With 37 beaches and a new liquor license ordinance that’s allowing new bars to open all over town faster than they ever have, it’s hard to come up with a reason why you shouldn’t visit Sydney. Sunny, sexy and always up for a party, Sydney is one of the world’s great beach cities.

Redfern is officially going off. Once a place you went to get rolled, it’s now a place you go to get your hands on a great sourdough roll. Eathouse Diner is a crazy-busy green-red paint splattered house of all things foodie, and had us salivating long before we first tried it. The start up of three well-fed friends, it shows no signs of slowing down. Oyster shots in Chilli salsa with tequila? Seared carpaccio of tuna with capers, ginger and grapefruit? Eastern-suburbs rich duck liver pate with sticky, sweet and sour onions? We’ll take it all. The blue swimmer crab with chipotle mayo is awesome, but the creamy corn-field yellow polenta, finished in bright green asparagus and a heady splash of truffle oil just might top it. This is the perfect new place for boozy, crowded late night dinners with lots of voluptuous feasting. Poor Surry Hills is starting to look a wee bit like the ugly step sister. Keep them coming, Redfern…

The change of licensing laws in Sydney has seen a slew of very cool little start up bars right across this parched city of ours -- and some of them are racking up some damn fine nosh, too. Redfern’s Dry Land Bar is leader of the pack. It’s actually easier to stay married to Kim Kardashian for life than it is to score a seat at Roy’s very comfortable and welcoming denizen of dish and drink. Dry Land’s cheeseburger is, in a word, epic. A thick, groaning slab of grilled meat, melting cheese and sweet smooshings of onion and tomato are absolutely perfect Friday night fodder. As are chips smashed head first into some creamy, awesomely over-the-top truffle mayo. With Eathouse diner just around the corner, you’re definitely spoiled for redfern choice. If you can't get a seat at one, then try the other.

We don’t know if we should tell you that the food at Surry Hills' kooky Nourishing Quarter is actually good for you, because then you might not want to go. Trust us though, not only are the humble offerings of NQ delicious, they’re totally… punk-rock wholesome. The Asian-South American inspired menu crunches out funky ancient grains like quinoa and amaranth, and with curious pictures of the Queen and kind but quirky service, you won’t even notice all that bloody tofu. Start with the three sisters rice paper rolls, probably the best of their kind in Sydney. The vegetarian pho, quinoa congee with lemon and humble pie won’t disappoint either. NQ is one of the few places in Sydney where vegans, foodies and transcendental astro frequent fliers can all come together happy and well fed. Brings a tear to your eye, doesn’t it?

By being cheap as bloody chips. Maybe Jamie didn’t trust convict stock to be cashed-up? Whatever the reason, we’re all winners at this little slice of Sydney dining. A colourful, relaxed interior, friendly staff and pink hued menus set the tone: fun, loud and buzzing. The cured meats are a treat, but the specially made buffalo mozzarella and pecorino with ‘amazing’ chilli jam make us all go a bit Berlusconi. Crispy squid with garlicky mayo, a creamy mushroom panzerotti and Tuscan wild boar sausages are all worth a full bodied thumbs up, and the big fat green olives on ice are so good you won’t even miss the martini. Think of how little it’s all costing, and you’ll be so happy you’ll lisp.
