Sonic 4's Physics "Reworked" for Episode II

Sega is still intent on releasing the next Sonic 4 episode in 2012.

By Chris Pereira, 12/30/2011 at 12:51

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II has been officially announced and is coming sometime in 2012, Sega revealed today.

In what will be a fairly lengthy wait for an episodic series (as long as we don't use Half-Life as the benchmark), Episode II will be coming more than a year after release of Episode I in 2010. Today's announcement mentions that the physics are being "completely reworked" in this new game, which is very welcome news for those who felt that particular problem plagued Episode I. The game will also see the return of Tails, as the trailer above teases in not-very-subtle fashion.

Avenger PR Man Becomes Cooperative After Holding Twitter, Email Accounts Hostage

Christoforo was allegedly holding the accounts "hostage."

By Chris Pereira, 12/30/2011 at 11:43

Paul Christoforo

The saga of the Avenger Controller and Paul Christoforo continues, although it appears to be finally headed toward a final resolution.

For those who may have missed this seemingly unbelievable story that has unfolded over the course of this final week of the year, an email chain between someone who purchased two Avenger Controllers and Paul Christoforo (pictured above), the product's now former marketing/sales/PR/customer service man, was published on Penny Arcade. In the emails Christoforo can be seen being rude, unprofessional, and unhelpful to the customer, listing off the many connections he allegedly has in the games industry and the press, and saying things like, "You just got told bitch." Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik became involved and was also the target of Christoforo's typo-laden emails at one point before Krahulik revealed himself to be the real-life version of Gabe from the comic. In other words, someone influential whom Christoforo couldn't bully.

VVVVVV and Bionic Commando Now Available on 3DS

The weekly Nintendo Download update brings a nice selection of titles to the eShop.

By Chris Pereira, 12/29/2011 at 11:13

VVVVVV

For the last Nintendo Download update of the year, the company didn't hold back. While there isn't a lot to be had for Wii owners, 3DS owners have two new releases to look forward to.

The first of these is VVVVVV, an old-school, indie platformer originally released for computers in early 2010. This is the first time it has appeared on a platform other than PC or Mac, though it's not because the game wasn't worthy of a port. It's not designed for those looking for a cakewalk; it's a very difficult game, though frequent checkpoints mitigate what could have been a frustrating experience. It's now available for $7.99, almost half the price it was originally released for, but also a good deal more than the $1.24 sale price Steam currently has it for. (Steam also has a demo, if you're interested in trying it first.)

Avenger Controller PR Rep Dropped as He Seeks Forgiveness

Christoforo admits he was wrong but doesn't think the publicity is all bad.

By Chris Pereira, 12/28/2011 at 12:01

The video above contains some NSFW language

The Internet was set ablaze yesterday as an email chain between a disgruntled customers, a PR rep doing customer service, and Penny Arcade's Mike Krahulik was published on the webcomic's website. In it, Ocean Marketing's Paul Christoforo was seen bullying the customer and being of little help to someone who has waited nearly two months to get the product he paid for in full in early November. Christoforo has now been replaced as the marketing man for the product in question, and the Boston native is now looking for the wave of hate to come to an end.

It was an order for the Avenger Controller (pictured below), a modified controller designed to allow disabled gamers to use the rear triggers, that started all of this. The controller's inventor and owner, David Kotkin, has apologized in a statement sent to Kotaku and revealed Ocean Marketing no longer represents the product.

Former Harmonix Shareholders Owed $383 Million by Viacom

Viacom, as you can probably guess, does not agree.

By Chris Pereira, 12/28/2011 at 10:15

Rock Band 3

The ongoing lawsuit between Viacom and former Harmonix shareholders has taken an interesting turn. Resolution accountants appointed by the two parties to determine how much money is owed to whom have determined Viacom owes the shareholders $383 million.

The shareholders originally filed their lawsuit last December alleging Viacom did not make good on bonus payments to the shareholders -- a group which includes Harmonix co-founders Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy -- and that it actively tried to minimize the amount it would have to pay in bonuses.

Customer Service Email Turns Into Nightmarish Blunder for PR Company

One PR company demonstrates exactly how to not handle customer service.

By Chris Pereira, 12/27/2011 at 11:26

Avengers PS3 controller

In business, it's probably safe to universally say that treating your customers right is important. When they pay for a product or service, they expect to get what they paid for; if something goes wrong, they expect to be able to get reasonable answers. In other words, they expect the exact opposite of what Ocean Marketing has done in handling a complaint.

As revealed in an email thread posted on Penny Arcade today, a customer named Dave placed an order for two PS3 Avenger controllers (pictured above) -- essentially a modified controller that would allow for disabled gamers to use the system's triggers. Despite being charged the entire amount upfront in early November, the "early December" release date came and went with Dave receiving no word on when the controllers would ship. After receiving a cryptic reply from Ocean Marketing's Paul Christoforo which simply read "Dec 17," Dave traded emails with the increasingly rude and unhelpful Christoforo.

Nintendo Direct Recap: Fire Emblem Dated in Japan

There wasn't much of interest for gamers outside of Japan.

By Chris Pereira, 12/26/2011 at 20:29

Nintendo Direct Iwata

Tonight's Nintendo Direct wasn't as newsworthy as the first one for those outside of Japan. The pre-recorded broadcast was largely comprised of trailers and release date announcements for 3DS games in Japan.

The new Fire Emblem for 3DS was described as an original game being designed for the handheld. In Japan it'll be known as Fire Emblem: Kakusei, which in English translates to Fire Emblem: Awakening. The report from earlier today that the first premium downloadable content from Nintendo would be released for Fire Emblem remains unconfirmed, but one aspect of the report was shot down. It had been said that the DLC would be coming in March; in fact, the game won't be available in Japan until April 19, so it won't be coming any sooner than that.

Nintendo's First DLC to be for Fire Emblem 3DS - Report

Nintendo is just months away from releasing its first premium downloadable content.

By Chris Pereira, 12/26/2011 at 15:38

Having added support for downloadable content on 3DS earlier this month, Nintendo is reportedly planning to take advantage of this support for the first time with its upcoming Fire Emblem game.

Shortly after announcing that it planned to drop the price of the 3DS this past summer, Nintendo stated that a system update coming in 2011 would enable developers to release DLC for games on the system. That support is now in place, but it hasn't yet been taken advantage of.

3DS special edition systems

Much like it did in October, Nintendo has announced a Nintendo Direct broadcast with only a few days' notice.

The official Nintendo Direct Ustream page has been updated with a date and time for its next broadcast. The event is set to take place in Japan on Tuesday and, like last time, it will be conducted in Japanese. For those in the United States who want to watch along, language barrier or not, the stream will start on Monday night at 10PM Eastern, 7PM Pacific.

Rift Account Database Hacked, Exposing Some Personal Info

Trion Worlds says there is no reason to believe full credit card info was compromised.

By Chris Pereira, 12/23/2011 at 11:55

Rift

The latest videogame target of hackers is Trion Worlds MMO Rift. The game's publisher is notifying customers that an account database has been breached, potentially revealing information like user names, encrypted passwords, email addresses, and, most alarmingly, the first and last four digits of users' credit card numbers.

At this point Trion claims "there is no evidence, and we have no reason to believe, that full credit card information was accessed or compromised in any way." However reassuring that may or may not be, the company is working to bolster its security to prevent subsequent attacks as it continues investigating the severity of the breach.

Direct2Drive Migrating to GameFly, Shedding Some Content in the Process

D2D customers will soon be accessing their content through the new GameFly client.

By Chris Pereira, 12/23/2011 at 11:21

GameFly client

Not long after GameFly launched a public beta of its Unlimited PC Play client, Direct2Drive has announced plans to brings its games and customers over to GameFly so that everything is handled through one outlet.

Direct2Drive was acquired by GameFly earlier this year, though it was unclear if the digital computer games distributor would continue to operate on its own. This upcoming transition will include new GameFly accounts being made for Direct2Drive customers who don't already have them; those who do will have their accounts merged, assuming they share the same email address. How this will work and more is outlined in an FAQ posted on Direct2Drive's website, and a few items in particular should be seen by the site's customers.

The Last Guardian Canceled, Says GameStop; Sony Says it's Not

Sony denies Fumito Ueda's final game with Team Ico has been canceled.

By Chris Pereira, 12/22/2011 at 13:05

The Last Guardian

Update: Good news: GameStop has stated it made a mistake in announcing that The Last Guardian was canceled. Following the release of Sony's statement below and Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida succinctly denying the cancellation on Twitter -- his responses included "no," "no!" and "deny" -- GameStop has released an official statement explaining what happened.

"The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers," the company told Kotaku. "Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known."

Zelda is the First 3DS Ambassador NES Game to be Sold on the eShop

In Japan even non-Ambassadors can now play the original Legend of Zelda on 3DS.

By Chris Pereira, 12/22/2011 at 12:37

The Legend of Zelda

3DS owners in Japan can now purchase The Legend of Zelda from the eShop. This is significant because Zelda is an NES game (or Famicom, since we're talking about Japan) and was among the ten given away for free to 3DS Ambassadors.

Nintendo announced a price drop on the 3DS in late July, less than six months after the system had launched. To appease early adopters, anyone who picked up the system before the price drop went into effect in August would become a 3DS Ambassador, entitling them to free downloads of ten NES games and ten GBA games. It was made clear at the time that the NES games would eventually be sold to the public on the eShop, but the GBA games would remain exclusive to Ambassadors (which explains why they aren't exactly feature-rich).

Vita Memory Cards Cheaper Than Expected, Launch Games Announced

Sony confirms the launch lineup for Vita in the United States and Canada.

By Chris Pereira, 12/22/2011 at 11:53

Vita launch

Sony has detailed the list of launch day games coming to Vita in the United States and Canada on February 22, and has also priced the accessories that will be available alongside the system. Most notably, the proprietary memory cards that have been a contentious issue aren't quite as pricey as first reported.

Listings on GameStop's website last month revealed what we believed to be the pricing of the memory cards. With the prices falling in line with those we saw in Japan and Sony not saying any differently, this sparked somewhat of an outrage as the prices were far greater than they would be if you tried to purchase an SD card of the same size. The 4GB card's price was set at $29.99, 8GB at $44.99, 16GB at $69.99, and 32GB at $119.99. Suddenly the surprisingly low $250 price for the Wi-Fi-only model didn't seem so great.
