Deadline is reporting that The Office and Parks and Recreation executive producer Greg Daniels has partnered with Mindy Kaling (Kelly from The Office) and Alan Yang (writer/producer for Parks & Rec) for some new animated comedies on NBC.
Kill of the Hill co-creator Daniels will produce both comedies – with Kaling's being about a high-school girls volleyball team and Yang's being about a group of 20something guys sharing a house in Los Angeles' upscale community of Hancock Park. Kaling will also reportedly be voicing one of the characters on her series.
This news represents an interesting shift in NBC programming as animated comedies have never really been a part of their primetime schedule (aside from God, the Devil and Bob and Father of the Pride). Could they be trying to give FOX a run for their money? When Daniels signed a new overall deal last year, he noted he wanted to get back into animation, having previously co-created King of the Hill and worked on The Simpsons.
