Lionsgate certainly isn't wasting any time on its second installment of The Hunger Games. Even though the first film won't be released until March, the studio is already lining up Slumdog Millionaire scribe Simon Beaufoy to write the screenplay for Catching Fire.
According to Deadline, Hunger Games director Gary Ross will be coming back for the sequel, but this time a new writer -- hopefully Beaufoy -- will be brought on to hammer out the script. Originally, Ross has planned to write out the outline for the second film and script it with the book's author Suzanne Collins (the pair wrote much of the first screenplay), but a hectic post-production process on the first film has made that notion a tall order.
Negotiations haven't begun with Beaufoy just yet, but the Oscar-winning writer is a definite frontrunner for Catching Fire. No start date has been confirmed for the sequel, but it's a high priority for the studio. And after the release of the very well-received theatrical trailer for The Hunger Games, it looks like the pressure's on for Lionsgate.
