No you're not crazy, Absolution is still in development, but today Square Enix announced they will be opening a new Montreal studio in 2012 - the new studio's first project? A new Hitman title. This new studio will create over 100 new jobs, while also adding another 150 jobs and expanding their existing Montreal studio responsible for Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
With another Hitman game announced already, it seems that Eidos is looking to make Hitman games a regular thing; it has worked well for franchises like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty. What do you think? Are you excited by the prospect of more Hitman sooner than later, or do you think this is a bad move?
Game Set Watch had a cool little youtube of Skyrim running without textures. The smooth looking graphics are actually a lot cooler than I would have thought. Do you find a smoother style Skyrim appealing?

The first investigation mission I undertook actually required the use of Google, not in the game but on the actual computer I was playing on. Real world knowledge that I sorely lacked was required. It’s at times like that, standing in front of a portrait and trying to figure out which historical painter’s style it’s mimicking, that I felt myself most absorbed. Even though I was tabbing out of the game to search the internet, I was in the game more than at any other time, because it’s whole philosophy is to blur the lines between the real world and The Secret World. They are one and the same and at that moment, they really were. It’s not just the investigation missions that form short stories though. All of the quests, even those that mostly involve biffing zombies, have enough dialogue and character to form interesting narratives of their own. Killing zombies isn’t just a way to clear an area, it’s a way to learn about how their biology works, with a full report sent back to Templar HQ. There’s a purpose to everything.
Even taking a lunch break from the game proved enlightening – “rather than quitting, you might want to just go to the church. The zombies can’t follow you in there”, spaketh one of the devs. Sure enough, the angry undead disintegrated at the threshold and my budding Templar rested there in peace while I scoffed down a baguette. They can’t walk on holy ground, I thought to myself, but it was only later that I noticed the Illuminati symbols hidden in the stained glass. Questions, questions, questions.
It sounds fairly interesting. I haven't played an MMO in ages, however. Are any of you looking forward to this one?
The DICE team are hard at work supporting Battlefield 3. To date, we have implemented several server updates to improve stability and performance. Next week we are publishing a significant Battlefield 3 client update for the PC. Console patches take a bit longer due to the certification requirements for console content, but it will follow shortly after the PC update. So what’s in the PC patch? You’ll see improved polish, stability, weapons balancing, squad control functionality, user interface enhancements, and several feature enhancements that address feedback the community has provided to date – plus we’re removing the so called “negative mouse acceleration” that some of you have experienced.
Edit: It was brought to my attention that the blog post was from the 18th. Which means the patch will come out this week.
In order to make up for it, EA announced that they'd be releasing the DLC early on the PS3. Unfortunately, this decision had been made (and announced) a month before the game was even released, so nobody involved felt particularly consoled.
The suit alleges that EA "misled and profited from thousands of their customers by making a promise that they could not, and never intended, to keep” and aims to get the promised copy of Battlefield 1943 into the hands of those who are entitled to it.
According to ol' Gabe Zichermann, studies have shown that the act of learning new things (such as mechanics in games) increases the amount of grey matter in our brains. He goes on to say that the way in which kids today are required to multi-task in the videogames they play increases their intelligence, and postulates that the Flynn effect - the phenomenon of human intelligence increasing over time, as reflected by IQ scores - can be explained by the increasing presence of videogames in society.
It does go slightly in the direction of this horrifying video from last year toward the end, with talk of everything in life becoming increasingly "gamified" (made more game-like) as time goes by. As far as I can gather, this means we'll be stuck in positive reinforcement loops built by corporations for the rest of our lives. He manages to put a slightly more positive spin on it and also uses the word "edutainment" seriously, which can only be applauded.
Since Dota 2 won, I put my own giftable copy of the Dota 2 beta up for grabs, and thanks to the generosity of a user named CvP we were able to secure an extra two gifts. The usernames of everyone who took part in the comments and expressed interest in Dota 2 were compiled in an Excel document, at which point Random.org was used to actually select the three winners.
I emailed each of the winners that were drawn last night, and all have since gotten back to me via email. Congratulations to leegion, Gnobb, and n0shadezs_ghost for lucking out! Steam gifts have been sent, so we'll see you guys in the game soon!
In a surprise twist, another present popped in my inbox from Dota 2's Icefrog this morning - five Dota 2 beta keys. To keep things fair, we'll initiate a new giveaway with these keys soon. We're doing this primarily because keys come with an extra two invites once activated, whereas Steam gift copies do not. Stay tuned right here for news on how to win!
I'm pretty excited at the prospect of CS:GO being attached to my mouse and keyboard. I tried it out briefly at the Eurogamer Expo on the PS3 but, unfortunately, controllers cripple my FPS gun-limbs. I interviewed Chet about the game and crossplatformity on the very same day, if you're interested in such things.
Earlier in the week, I was in the office of a Russian researcher as he scrawled things on a whiteboard for me and five of my accomplices. That totally badass quantum levitation video that's been sweeping the entire internet was mentioned and his eyes immediately lit up with childlike glee. "Show me!" he barked. The joy was palpable.
The real importance of this anecdote is yet to come; watching that video lead to him tell us about the time that a couple of physicists decided they'd pass an afternoon by putting a frog inside a 10-tesla electromagnet. The dear frog's electron orbitals were altered in such a way as to induce an electric current, which generated a magnetic field that opposed that of the magnet. The frog levitated.
The real travesty of the situation, aside from the fact that it never earned a Nobel Prize, is that this video has been on YouTube since 2006 and has less than half a million views. What? How? Why? Here.
