The IGN team has been watching Rockstar's GTA V trailer. Here are our reactions...

Dystopian Dream

Good God. It's gorgeous. The voice-over and scenery is a completely convincing set-up, transporting the viewer to a Southern California consumer utopia of fast cars and lush golf courses. But, this being GTA, there are dark undertones of a murky past, a disturbing future and a present gone horribly wrong. This is a world of home repossessions, environmental pollution, drug-deals and poverty. This is the world we recognize; the Californian dream in all its 21st Century perversions and contradictions. Do I want to explore this world, and the dangers within? You bet.

Rockstar's Vision

I can't tell you how excited I am for another Grand Theft Auto game. I'm a huge fan of the series, and really believe in Rockstar's vision for the sandbox games they've created. Returning to San Andreas excites me too, though I hope that we'll see more than just Los Santos, which is all we got a view of in the trailer. I'm also anxious for a release date. Stop teasing us, Rockstar! Tell us more! Oh, and if that really is Tommy Vercetti in the trailer, that's enough for me to be through-the-roof stoked about GTAV. After all, Vice City isn't only my favorite GTA game, but one of my favorite games of all-time.

Big Cities

I think we might have just seen the first of what could be multiple character and city trailers for GTA V. This first trailer was very heavy on Los Santos, but it offered a few hints of some outlying areas representative of spots outside of the city, including vineyards, wind turbines, and some Yosemite-esque mountain environments. It doesn't appear that we'll be locked into Los Santos, and considering the rumors that have been floating around that you can play as other characters, I think that we'll be seeing some new faces set in some fully realized cities throughout San Andreas.

Gameplay Hopes

Grand Theft Auto V looks great, much prettier than Grand Theft Auto IV from what was shown in the trailer. Dressed up in the typical Rockstar style, the video is certainly exciting to watch. I've played so many Grand Theft Auto games at this point, though, that I'm much more interested in the gameplay than the look. Will the character upgrade system from San Andreas return, or is Rockstar sticking to the relative realism of Grand Theft Auto IV? Can I purchase property? Will I get a multiple car garage? And perhaps most importantly, can I fly that jet?

West Coast Love

I'm excited to go back to San Andreas. I find Los Angeles so much more interesting than New York, and for a series that hits all the points that GTA does, California is way more socially, politically, economically and culturally relevant. The Santa Monica and Venice Beach areas look great, and the people seemed less uncanny valley and more lively. See that girl doing a double take with the shirtless jogger?

Prettiest World

I don't know the minutia of the Grand Theft Auto series like some of the editors at IGN, but I admit the formula always appealed to me: big world, big characters, big guns. The Grand Theft Auto V trailer, as expected, looks fantastic. It came packed with way more in-game footage than I was expecting, and what showed up looks notably better than Grand Theft Auto IV. I thought Skyrim was poised to rock the sweeping vistas and digital mountains of modern gaming, but GTA V could enter as a serious contender for "prettiest world."

Looks Familiar

I'm pretty underwhelmed with the debut trailer. San Andreas was my least favorite Grand Theft Auto because of how bloated it felt, so a return to that location isn't a big selling point for me. Also, the brief hint at the premise is a little too familiar. Will V take Grand Theft Auto to new heights and be more than the typical rise-through-the-ranks-of-crime story? I hope so, but I didn't see any evidence of it here. The trailer sets the scene for V -- now I need to see some examples of gameplay I wasn't slogging through in the past two GTAs.

Stray from the Serious Approach

Save the "Oscar worthy story" and deep, brooding character interactions between dark and mysterious middle aged Italian stereotypes. Scrap the bitchy cell phone calls from my friends and cousins who demand a bowling date while I'm shotgun deep in a bank heist. That kind of stuff is not what I play Grand Theft Auto games for. Bring back the jetpacks, flamethrowers, Roswell aliens and all of the other insanities that made some of Rockstar's craziest Grand Theft Auto departures the enjoyable sandbox experiences they were and stray away from GTA IV's more serious approach.
