Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
It looks like last week's triumphant return of Beavis and Butt-head wasn't just a fluke. Episode two, while not quite as funny as episode one, turned out to be a great follow-up, with two clever shorts and a few awesome TV critiques.
The first short, titled "Daughter's Hand," has the duo misinterpreting the meaning of asking for someone's "hand" in marriage. They assume, in their warped, sexed-up little minds, that asking for someone's hand means, well...you know. Beavis and Butt-head travel down the street to their new neighbor's house looking to entice the father to give them her hand. He tells them that his daughter already has a boyfriend, but if they'd like to wait, he's OK with that. So, the moronic duo wait on the sidewalk, where they meet up with a longtime B&B; fav, Tom Anderson – the pseudo-inspiration for Hank Hill on King of the Hill.
Anderson tells the boys that the girl can only give her hand to one man and that they have to fight for her honor. They return to the house and once again get shot down by the father, who gets pretty angry when he realizes what they want to do with his daughter's hand. Anderson steps in, defending the boys, and the two fight it out, but not before B&B; realize that they have their own hands, to do with as they please.
"Daughter's Hand" is pretty funny, though not as out-and-out hilarious as the first short from episode one. The idea of Beavis and Butt-head cordially asking a father for his daughter's hand is a pretty funny one, but without a final rejection/confrontation from the daughter herself it doesn't quite have the final punchline that it seemed to be building to. And I was really hoping the daughter would turn out to be Daria -- no such luck (not yet, anyway).
As usual, the best gags from this short come from the TV critiques, in which Beavis and Butt-head hilariously mock 16 and Pregnant (the clip I witnessed at NYCC) and True Life: I Have a Paranormal Ability. The 16 and Pregnant segment is a knockout. (Favorite line: "This guy looks like he might be stupider than us!") It rips that show to shreds in just under two minutes. Can't wait to see them poke at this show again in the future. The True Life segment wasn't quite as sharp as last week's True Life jab at the porn addict, but it had a few chuckles.
The second short is titled "Tech Support" and has B&B; accidentally getting roped into working at a tech support facility after they venture to the call center in search of an old drive-in movie theater. As it turns out, their misguided advice to people calling in with computer issues turns out to be exactly what the boss (voiced by David Koechner) was looking for. He instructs Hamid, another worker in their cubicle, to act just like they do.
Watching Beavis and Butt-head stumble around a tech support call center was, once again, a great setup. And having Hamid attempt, quite poorly, to imitate the duo was pretty funny. But the best gag of the short had Beavis talking with a young woman about the troubles of being a single mom. Priceless.
There was only one TV segment in this short. It mocked the music video for "Firework" from Katy Perry. Not quite as sharp or off-the-wall as that music video from last week ("Kids" – MGMT really know how to make some wacked out music videos), but the segment did feature a solid series of rapid fire jokes that largely poked fun of the fireworks shooting from Katy Perry's breasts.
While this episode didn't quite reach the reference level Beavis and Butt-head zaniness from episode one, it does show that Mike Judge certainly has enough material to work with. Even if a short here and there falls flat, he's got a myriad of silly reality shows and music videos over at MTV to mock, and these critiques are worth the price of admission alone.
