What Nintendo needs to do to make the Wii U appeal to the massesOctober 9, 2011 by

Welcome to my first blog. I have been on IGN for a couple of months now, but have not written anything. Anyway let's get back to the topic at hand.  Nintendo's current and dying console the Wii had great games but, there were a few things that the Xbox 360 and PS3 had that the Wii didn't. The 3 main things are HD graphics,  a great online, and  3rd party support

HD Graphics

Even though some games on the Wii were beautiful (DKCR), it didn't have HD , so it wasn't able to pump out the graphics that the PS360 could. This looks like it is going to be fixed because of the demoes that nintendo has shown at E3. They were stunning to say the least.

Here is a link to the bird demo from E3

It's confirmed that the Wii U will run in native 1080p, the PS3 and Xbox 360 only run in 720p and then upscale to 1080p.  So I think nintendo has the graphics part covered

Online

This is the part that I am most worried about. Nintendo says that the Wii U online will be flexible. I take that to mean that developers can do whatever they want online. That could be disastrous.  Think a million different IDs and passwords for different games. No unified account. It would be friend codes all over again. But Nintendo says they will be implementing DLC . Personally I think the 4 things they need in online are DLC, an achievement system, chat,  an online store. The online store includes Virtual Console and WiiWare.  They are half- way there though, since they say there will be DLC and they will keep the online store.

3rd Party Support

This is another part that I think that they have down, since publishers like EA and Sega support them. If they manage to get guys like Activison, Ubisoft, Capcom, Konami, Bethedesa, Valve, Square Enix, Namco- Bandai to support them, then it will be fine. The reason the Wii didn't have that much 3rd party support was because it wasn't able to compete with the PS360 in terms of power, but the the Wii U is competitive. But Nintendo needs indie support as well to be competetive with apple. Cheap $1-5 dollar games. But that's a blog for another day.

Don't just hate on me for writing this. I am a huge Nintendo fan, and I loved the Wii. But let's face it Nintendo could have done some things better. It looks like the Wii U can fix that and I have no doubt that it wii. Did you like my first blog or did you hate it? Do you agree with my list. Sound off in the comments below and thanks for reading
