The Gaming Platform can be either a portable or Home residential console. Regardless, the function and complexity have increased for both. The performance profile of the typical Gaming Platform is increasing due to:

more complex and media rich gaming content
Internet connectivity
longer battery life for portable units
lower dynamic and standby power consumption
all with decreased cost constraints

ARM processors are used as the main processor and controller in game machines. Portable game machines require extremely efficient operation due to battery life requirements.

ARM is an excellent fit for this market as it leads in mW/MHz and performance per silicon size.

Low power and high performance is also critical in Console game machines. The latest Cortex-A9 applications processor is capable of running at up to 2 GHz per core, and, in a dual configuration, can deliver 10,000 DMIPS in a 1.9 W power consumption envelope.
