Realtime World's Project MyWorld Finds A Buyer
- 0 Comments
In late June, failed development studio Realtime Worlds announced the development of MyWorld, a social city-builder. Develop reports that an anonymous American company has completed the purchase of Project MyWorld. It's unknown at this time how the purchase of the game will affect the 23 developers assigned to the project, and apparently there are several more potential buyers for other RTW bits and pieces. Develop also suggests that a new spin-off studio may rise from RTW under American ownership. No further news on the status of APB.

Stardock Lays Off Staff Following Disappointing Elemental Launch
- 13 Comments
Last night Stardock's head honcho Brad Wardell confirmed on the Elemental forums that the company was indeed forced to lay off some of their staff recently. The reason? Their Master of Magic inspired game Elemental doesn't seem to be selling as well as expected. Here's a snip of what Mr. Wardell had to say on the matter:

Elemental's revenue was anticipated to provide the revenue both for our main games team's next project as well as a second team. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen so we've had to start laying people off.

No one is being fired. None of these people did anything wrong. Stardock is a small company and each person here is truly amongst the best and brightest. So you can imagine how much it sucks for all of us to lay off anyone. We haven't had to lay anyone off since our migration from the OS/2 market in 1998. It would be great if we can bring as many of these people back over time if the studio can afford it.

He also shares some information on why he thought Elemental had more of a rocky launch than normal, and also insists that the layoffs will not affect post launch support at all. The cuts seem to have only affected the company's intent to fund a second game development team.

As always, best of luck to those that were let go.

All Things Duke Nukem Forever

2K blogs a load of links so that we can all keep tabs on Duke Nukem. Perhaps to make sure he doesn't run off again. Last night at PAX they had 200,000 views on the Ustream unveiling and several hundreds of people watching Randy Pitchford's demo, along with checking the exclusive PAX trailer and getting some hands-on time. Here's all that linked good, along with some pics, and a bit of YouTube action from the Ustream stuff.

Here are three shots from Cargasm, the game described as "an orgy of pure racing". Keep reading, this bit is awesomely messed up.

During races, players will be constantly exhorted to go faster by a bevy of Cargasm Girls. If they are fast enough, players can collect these ravishing maidens for their own personal Cargasm Harem. As the players win races, new cars, Ecstasy points and trophies can also be unlocked and uploaded to an online global leaderboard.

The trophies that can be won include Cargasm Rave, Thrust, Lesbos, Orgy, Gigolo, Lothario, Playboy and the most coveted of all, Cargasm Sultan.

Red 5 Studio Announces Firefall
Red 5 Studios has announced its first title, a team-based action shooter called Firefall. The game is large-scale, open world, and allows for hundreds of players on the same battlefield. Firefall is due for release at the end of 2011; and the Red 5 Studios team includes the team lead of World of Warcraft and the lead designer of Tribes. Beta applications for the game are now being accepted.

“When I founded Red 5, I knew I wanted to do something different than anything I’d done before.” says CEO and Chief Creative Officer Mark Kern, who led the development for World of Warcraft. “I wanted to take the best of what I learned making online games and bring that to skill-based shooters.” Scott Youngblood, former lead designer behind groundbreaking multiplayer shooter Tribes, couldn’t agree more. “When Mark brought me on to help design Firefall, it was obvious to me that he was dedicated to building something different. With Firefall, I’m finally able to make the game of my dreams.”

Firefall paints a beautifully devastating vision of Earth, 200 years in the future. The promise of a new clean energy source, Crystite, leads to the disastrous arrival of the Melding, a hostile energy storm that engulfs most of our home planet. Earth’s surviving humans must band together in the eye of the Melding storm to save our species. Unfortunately, a new danger emerges as a bloodthirsty race known as The Chosen threatens humanity’s survival.

Players will protect the Earth through the use of high-tech battleframes, which can be customized extensively to unlock the power of Firefall’s class-based combat. Battleframes allow players to specialize in their favorite style of play, while giving them the flexibility to swap and trade their way to new configurations on-the-fly. Whether you enjoy supporting your team, aggressively assaulting an enemy position, or sneaking behind enemy lines, there is a battleframe for you.

Firefall will feature a free-to-play model that allows players to experience every detail of the vibrant world without having to pay a penny. Updates to the game, dynamic world events, and other content will also be offered without a price tag, while a marketplace will allow fans to purchase optional enhancements.

PAX: Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad Trailer
- 10 Comments
The new Red Orchestra 2 reveal video from PAX is out, featuring flying limbs of all things. Do any of you guys still play the original actively? All I remember from the first release is crazy recoil, trench camping, weapon inaccuracy, and small maps that tried to pretend they were big. I prefer more open world type FPS realism with natural cover and all, like that seen in ArmA 2. I'll keep an eye on this, but I'm not sure if it's my type of game just yet.

After seeing the trailer I do have to wonder though that if both Tripwire and Treyarch have brought a little bit of gore back to PC FPS in recent years then what's stopping Raven Software from doing a proper Soldier of Fortune sequel?

Checking Out Duke Nukem Forever On 2K Ustream
- 24 Comments
It's pretty clear that the big news out of PAX 2010 is the resurrection of Duke Nukem Forever. I'm sure we'll be getting tons of reports on the game but for now -- IGN saw the demonstration and got a bit of hands-on time. This quote isn't about the actual gameplay, but ack, this is so wrong that I had to share!

Before getting hands-on time with Duke Nukem Forever, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford talked to us about how Gearbox became a part of the Duke saga. After some persuasion, Gearbox was offered the keys to the beleaguered game (it has existed in the ether in one form or another for over a decade) and Pitchford jumped at the chance. "To us, it felt like Duke can't die," said Pitchford. The Gearbox boss also related his wife's insistence that he take up Duke's cause and that if he succeeded in making it happen, she'd give him – and this a direct quote – a "Chilean Miner." She would "go down the shaft and stay 'til Christmas."

BTW, Duke was running on PCs at the hands-on kiosks. Woot, go PC! Not only is Duke apparently very bloody, but now that he's out of retirement he's got a lot to say in the classic humour department.

There's also this two part UStream from 2K Games. Check out the queue, then head on inside for a presentation, some developer Q&A;, and play time.

Shogun 2: Total War Video Battle Report
In the first Shogun 2: Total War Battle Report, The Creative Assembly's Land Battle Programmer (Ingimar Gudmunsson) and Studio Communications Manager (Kieran Brigden) talk viewers through an epic night time battle, as the Chosokabe clan take on the Takeda clan. And when they say "epic", they mean epic! That's a whole lot of little army dudes on the field. ;)

The video will demonstrate some of the new graphics technology integrated into Shogun 2: Total War, including new deferred lighting, accurate fire and building damage simulation and rainfall effects. The background also hints at the sheer scale of the castles that players will later encounter in siege battles.

With fire archers raining down arrows on the katana cavalry and an epic hand-to-hand engagement on the battlefield showing off some of the new motion-captured combat, who will prosper in this winner-takes-all battle?

LOTRO Going Free-to-Play Next Week
Starting September 10th, Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online is going free-to-play. What this actually means is that players will have the option of not paying a monthly subscription fee to play the game, but not all content will be accessible to them. To experience the premium content, you either have to become a VIP (ie. pay a monthly fee) or buy content packages from the Turbine online store as you need them. If Turbine's success with DDO as a free-to-play MMO is anything to go by, this move bodes well for LOTRO.

At the same time as the business model change, new content is also being added to the game. Volume III Book 2 introduces a brand new region called Enedwaith and new skirmishes.

In Other News: Karma Chameleon?
Ok guys, explain this mystery for me. As I'm getting ready to do the morning update Culture Club's Karma Chameleon pops into my head. I was sitting in absolute silence when it happened, aside from some white noise coming from an air filter. Worst part is I can't get it out of my head, ughhh. I'm going to have to talk to Jubers and Trinity about making it the podcast opener so that you can all share in my torment. Karma karma karma karma karma chameleonnnnn!!! *shoots self*

Ok so, stupid question time. Who here likes food? I've really been itching to go to a Mongolian bbq grill style place lately. If you haven't been to one before it's pretty much a restaurant where you make your own bowl of meats, veggies, and noodles or rice, then pick out your own spices, sauces, etc., Once you're good to go you bring your bowl up to a group of grillmasters cooking over a big open flattop grill, and then they cook everything up at blazing hot temps for a few minutes. Assuming that you know how to put together good flavor combos it's not that hard to create extremely wicked dishes. The price is pretty reasonable too.

So what's your favorite type of restaurant / food joint?
