San Diego Comic-Con is a huge show for geeks of all types. The show is always full of announcements regarding comics, movies, games, and various other pop culture avenues. But for some of us, all of that plays second fiddle to the real appeal of SDCC. Who cares about movie panels and autographs when there are exclusive collectibles to be had?
SDCC 2010 has plenty of exclusive toys, statues, and other swag for those who bring their wallets. In this little guide, we're running through the most interesting of the SDCC-exclusive crop. From a giant Galactus to a plush Nibbler to a tiny rendition of a wrestling icon/G.I. Joe veteran, we're showing you what to keep an eye out for next week.
Marvel Masterworks Galactus
Company: Hasbro
Price: $54.99
The time has come to toss that figure in the back of the closet. Hasbro's new Marvel Masterworks Galactus is similar in design, but even bigger and more detailed. This Galactus is 19-inches tall and designed to fit in with Hasbro's current marvel Universe figures. It even has a light-up function for those who prefer their displays a little more interactive.
Those who aren't attending SDCC needn't worry. Hasbro will also be selling Galactus on their website. However, the SDCC version comes with exclusive packaging, making it the most collector-worthy.
Marvel Mighty Muggs – Mark VI Iron Man
Company: Hasbro
Price: $15.99
Mighty Muggs are Hasbro's entry into the popular designer vinyl toy market. The line has been pretty much dormant in the past year or so, but thats slowly changing in 2010. Toys R' Us has been selling a pair of Iron Man Mighty Muggs inspired by the new movie. This exclusive Mugg offers a slightly different take on the Iron Man Mark VI armor.
As you can see, this new version of Shellhead sports a flip-up visor. If you've ever wondered what Robert Downey Jr's face would look like shrunk down and plastered on vinyl, wonder no longer.
And Mighty Muggs fans can take heart. Toys R' Us will have more new figures available later this fall. The next planned wave will include characters like Magneto, Deadpool, Green Goblin and new takes on Wolverine and Spider-Man.
Arkham Asylum – Battle-Damaged Batman
Company: DC Direct
Price: $19.99
DC Direct has only recently started offering exclusive figures at SDCC. If their Green Lantern exclusives are any indication, expect this year's batch to vanish rather quickly. This summer, Batman takes center stage.
DC Direct is tackling Batman: Arkham Asylum with at least two waves of figures in late 2010 and early 2011. their SDCC exclusive will offer a preview of that line.
Gamers and Bat-lovers can snag a battle-damaged version of Batman at the show. Unfortunately, DC Direct hasn't released an image of the figure, so all we can do is provide a pic of the standard Batman figure for comparison. But given how well the other figures appear to capture the look of the games, we wouldn't be too worried about this one. Just be sure to show up at DC's booth early.
Hot Toys' Predator Guardian Figure
Company: Sideshow
Price: $184.99
If you love dropping hundreds of dollars on high-end action figures, Hot Toys is a name you're probably familiar with. The company continuously churns out quality recreations of famous movie characters that are a strain on the wallet but very easy on the eyes.
Many of Hot Toys' older figures are rare enough that they run several times their original cost on the secondary market. That includes the company's various Predator figures. Luckily, SDCC is a chance for collectors to grab a Hot Toys Predator without necessarily taking out a second mortgage. The Predator Guardian is an extremely detailed figure depicting one of the creatures from Predator 2. Pick this up now and keep your fingers crossed that Hot Toys will immortalize Danny Glover and Gary Busey in plastic next.
Marvel Minimates Rob Liefeld's X-Force & '90s X-Men Sets
Company: Action Figure Xpress/Diamond Select
Price: $17.00 each
The X-Men have evolved many times over the decades. But thanks in no small part to the classic animated series, many X-fans have a soft spot for the early '90s incarnation of the team. Those fans are getting a double dose of '90s goodness in the form of two Minimate sets.
AFX is offering a set of four X-Force favorites, including a much-requested Deadpool rehash. These pint-sized toys pack all the claws, illogically large guns, and pointless pouches the series was know for back in the day. DST, meanwhile, is tackling the X-Men proper.
New versions of Magneto, Wolverine, and Bishop are packed alongside cartoon favorite Jubilee. In both cases, the '90s appeal of these figures is only accentuated by their cute, Lego-esque design.
Thundercats Lion-O Statue
Company: Action Figure Xpress
Price: $60.00
It's been too damn long since the Thundercats have enjoyed the spotlight. While we can't promise that a new movie or animated series is on the horizon, at least we can say that new collectibles are poised to hit the market. Icon Heroes is revisiting the '80s classic with a series of statues.
Consider their SDCC exclusive a preview of things to come.
At first glance this Lion-O piece might look like an action figure, but it's actually a statue. It's roughly the size of Mattel's new He-Man figures, though non-articulated and cast in polyresin. He may be immovable, but with the Sword of Omens and Claw Glove in tow, Lion-O is ready to do battle with any toy that wanders his way.
Comic-Con has basically already arrived, but that won't stop...
