As databases grow in size, performance tends to decrease due to bottlenecks in CPU, memory and disk. One technique to solve this problem is to horizontally distribute data across multiple servers, building a shared-nothing topology with data "sharded" across the systems. Cloud services offer unique capabilities for sharded databases by offering virtually unlimited scalability.

In his session at the 6th International Cloud Expo, Michael Heydt, Senior Manager with SunGard Consulting Services, will focus on lessons learned in using cloud services to create sharded cloud databases, techniques for accessing the databases through web services, data sharding strategies, data evolution, adding shards to the system, and techniques of executing high-performance parallel queries across distributed data sets.
