Portal 2 Delayed Into 2011, E3 Surprise Portal Related
- 17 Comments
Say it ain't so, a Valve game delayed?! In other news, the E3 surprise won't be Source Engine 2, or Duke Nukem Forever, or any other faked-up nonsense, but rather something to do with Portal:

Today, Valve announced that making games is hard!

Aperture Science, doing business as Aperture Laboratories LLC, in partnership with Valve today announced the successful completion of an ethics-review-panel-supervised release date restructuring process. Portal 2, the sequel to the ground-breaking title that earned over 30 Game of the Year awards despite missing its original ship date, is now targeted for a 2011 release.

Representatives from both companies acknowledged that public safety concerns factored into the decision. They went on to say that even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned, all life on earth won't instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time.

"Also, the game will be even better," they added, missing an historic opportunity to create the first product delay press release to mention that a product is being delayed to make it worse.

To ask questions about how close we all came to dying, or to ask futile questions about the previously announced E3 ***PORTAL-2-THEMED-FOR-GOD'S SAKE*** surprise or, less futilely, to schedule an appointment to attend a Portal 2 screening at the Valve booth during E3, please contact Valve's delegate to the EU's Valve Time Studies Group, Doug Lombardi.

Max Payne 3 Delayed; Mafia II Demo August; GTAIV Hits 17m
- 8 Comments
The most unsurprising news this year: Max Payne 3 has been delayed to ensure that it is a blockbuster befitting its expense. Now out November at the earliest, don't expect to run into fat, scruffy Max until at least 2011:

While we do not take the movement of any title lightly, our recent success with Red Dead Redemption illustrates the importance and the benefits of giving a title the time that it needs in order to fulfil its potential in the marketplace. The team at Rockstar is focused on making this the best possible experience in interactive entertainment.

Fallout: New Vegas Drops Games For Windows Live For Steam
- 22 Comments
In a fact-filled fan interview, Bethesda reveals that Fallout: New Vegas will now rely entirely on Steam and the Steamworks SDK, rather than Games For Windows Live as used in Fallout 3:

Fallout: New Vegas uses Steamworks for achievements and other features (such as friends lists, cloud storage of user preferences and so on). Use of Steam will be mandatory at retail. So what does that mean? We’ve implemented Steamworks in as light and unobtrusive a way as possible. Yes, you will have to install Steam when you install Fallout: New Vegas if you don’t already have it. And yes, you will have to be online at the time of that initial install. However you can install the game on as many systems as you want (with no restrictions!), and you do not have to be online to play the game after your initial activation. Not only that, but once the game has activated on Steam, you can throw out the game DVD entirely and just download the game over Steam. If you don’t even have a DVD drive, you can just take the CD-Key from the box, enter it into Steam, and download it without ever using the disc at all.

For those concerned, this will have no affect on mod development whatsoever. Modders will still be able to create and distribute their plugins the same way they have in the past.

We made the decision to use Steam after looking at all the various options out there and decided that it provided the best, least intrusive experience for PC gamers. We think you’ll agree.

Shogun 2: Total War Interview
An internally produced Shogun 2: Total War interview from The Creative Assembly sheds further light on the 2011 sequel:

Chronologically, where does Shogun 2: Total War fit in the timeline of the original game?

As in Shogun: TW, the setting we have is during Japan’s Sengoku Jidai: the warring states period in the 16th century, before the Tokugawa Shogunate asserted its complete control and ended the anarchy.

We have chosen this setting now for the same reasons we chose it a decade ago: it was a time of epic struggle between the feudal lords of rival clans across Japan. With the breakdown of central authority, there was constant warfare and any one of many clans could have ended up winning. It’s the perfect setting for a Total War game where the player can choose one of many factions all competing for the final victory in what was the most turbulent period of Japanese history.

It was the time when a uniquely Japanese samurai culture was forged. It was also a time of great change: for example, first contact with Europeans saw the introduction of Christianity and later the first large-scale use of firearms in Japanese armies. This opens up lots of interesting gameplay choices for the player that are unique to this specific period.

How has the Total War series progressed since the original game and what will this bring to the sequel?

Clearly, PC technology has come on so far in the last ten years, and we can do things that were simply impossible before: the game engines for both campaign and battle have been completely revolutionised (and re-written) several times over since the original game which had sprites in battle and a 2D campaign map. Now we can portray huge samurai armies in all their glory with a new and improved battle graphics engine that looks utterly stunning. On the campaign side, we will depict the unique geography of Japan with the most beautiful map we have ever produced. We are constantly looking at ways to improve the game, and each new project gives us the opportunity to push into new territory.

Men Of War: Vietnam Details
A fact sheet for the recently revealed Men Of War: Vietnam RTS:

Leading Eastern and Central European publisher, 1C Company, announced today the development of Men of War: Vietnam, a new title in the world-known Men of War real-time tactics game series. The new, story-driven campaign lets you taste the explosive mix of the jungle, Hueys and rock-n-roll in 1968.

During this conflict the US troops were using not only new weapons, but new tactics as well. The war in Vietnam became the first military conflict where helicopters played a significant role, and this is one of the major features of this game.

The campaign is 10 missions and focuses on a team of elite special ops soldiers, and each one of them has a personality. The unit includes Sergeant John Merrill, machinegunner Jim Walsh, sniper Sonny Armstrong, grenade launcher operator Carl Dillan and combat engineer Bill Kirby. In some missions they can count only on themselves, while in the others they act together with regular US and South-Vietnamese troops. Missions in Men of War: Vietnam range from special operations (rescuing a shot-down pilot, escorting a reporter, etc.) to full scale battles.

Key features:

  • The new campaign tells the story of the US special ops team in the Vietnam War
  • Breathtaking missions including an ambush on the Ho Chi Minh trail, a game of cat and mouse in the Mekong Delta, raids into Cambodia and Laos, bridge defense during the Tet offensive and more
  • New weapons and units: M-16, T-54, M-113, Patton III, M-60, AK-47, M-14, RPG-2, M-72 LAW, RPK and many more

Itagaki At E3 With New Game
The creator of Dead Or Alive and Ninja Gaiden, Tomonobu Itagaki, will be at E3 next week to announce his first game since leaving Tecmo in a bitter row over money:

Hello, this is Tomonobu Itagaki. I have an important announcement to make.

This year, at the E3 show, we have decided to go public with the latest game we are working on right now at Valhalla Game Studios.

Our motivation was always to come up with a project from scratch, to gather together and work together as comrades, and to create something that all of you gamers can enjoy. It was for this simple goal that we decided to go independent.

In the past, I created four unique games - "Dead or Alive", "Ninja Gaiden", "DOA Xtreme", and "NG Dragon Sword". Thus, this announcement will be the fifth all-new project in my lifetime. I don't know if that number is large or small, but I know as a fact that every one of these announcements was a presentation of a new gaming paradigm from me to all of you. This time, it is no different. Details will be coming soon, so please look forward to hearing from me.

My heart pounds with anticipation every time I make these announcements. It's not something one can get used to - complacency is never an option for me.

I am so eager to hear your reactions to what I have to show you.

Protecting Your Gaming PC From Evil Do'ers
    - 27 Comments
Rude Gameware has announced the release of GameGuard, new anti-virus software engineered with gamers in mind. Hmph. I hate bulky system hog anti-virus / spyware software, so I just purchased Malwarebytes, since I like the free version. Now I'm feeling vi-curious. Tee hee, get it? Vi-curious. I'm too clever for your shirt.

Featuring elements from the industry leading and award-winning BitDefender, GameGuard provides real-time monitoring and automatic updating from virus and malware databases to protect systems from online threats such as rootkits or spyware. As a result, PC enthusiasts can finally surf and play in peace without worrying about viruses, weakened firewalls or annoying program pop-ups.

Other anti-virus programs are notorious for being memory and system resource hogs, which can cause frame rate drops and other performance hits during gameplay. Even worse, some programs continually request user interaction through pop-ups, verification windows and other interruptions. Who wants to deal with that in the middle of a firefight? GameGuard avoids these issues by being specifically optimized for low resource loads on a system, which helps maintain high frame rates. Additionally, it will never have a pop-up or user request during a game, allowing you to get your game on without annoying interruptions..

GameGuard also provides a safe and secure networking environment for systems, so intruders won't have a chance to gain access to your system. No reconfiguring of ports or disabling of firewalls is necessary; GameGuard is designed to accept required internet connections for online matches or LAN play. What's more, it creates and automatically secures your internet connection with a two-way firewall to keep your network safe from unauthorized users.

In addition, this protection extends beyond your favorite games to protect your online identity whenever you surf the Web. GameGuard has been designed to block web pages that attempt to steal your credit card data and prevent info leaks from e-mail, instant messengers and web pages. You can easily and securely shop, bank and explore the Net without fear of identity theft with GameGuard.

"Our team got so sick of having to disable our anti-virus while gaming, leaving our PCs vulnerable for a crippling attack, that we set out to engineer a solution. ," said Michael Epstein, Chief Rude Officer. " GameGuard gives gamers the protection they need without sacrificing the performance they demand."GameGuard is now available by download and in stores across the country for a suggested retail price of $29.95.

    Ask Cryptic: Star Trek Online Q&A;
A new issue of Ask Cryptic has cropped up for Star Trek Online. The general Q&A; features chatter on the upcoming level cap increase, Tier 6 ships, Season Two's new dimension, new mini-games, a Federation Diplomacy Corp and Star Cluster Missions, plus plenty more.

Q: chrystofer: Why are you offering welcome back promos, so early, do you think this makes Star Trek Online seem desperate?

A: No, we don’t think so. We’ve made tons of change and additions to the game since launch. All the STFs, Injury System, Difficulty Slider, Accolade system, tons more as well. These were all made based on feedback and requests from the community and players of the game. We don’t think that letting people know about the changes and trying to get those who might’ve left because we didn’t have a certain feature is desperate. Seem like good business sense. : )
